General Storage Auction Talk / Re: What am I missing..
« on: June 18, 2014, 09:58:40 PM »
This may not be the case here, but I have heard where people who do live storage auctions and do the online auctions have figured out each others "handle" or buyer name and have taken to running each other up on the online auctions when they recognize each other as being the current high bidder.

The Lounge / Re: Obama rated as the 5th best in US history
« on: June 17, 2014, 07:26:56 AM »Obama has been rated as the 5th best according to a study completed at Texas A&M University. The Public Relations Office at A&M released this statement: "After only 5 years in office, Americans have rated President Obama the 5th best President in U.S. history."
According to Texas A&M, these are the results:
1. Reagan & Lincoln tied for first
2. Seventeen presidents tied for second
3. Twenty-three other presidents tied for 3rd
4. Jimmy Carter came in 4th
5. Obama was 5th.
So it's just based on what people "think" not on any in-depth analysis of the Presidents achievements or executive ability. Just a popularity contest. No one remembers Grover Cleveland or Franklin Pierce...
I bet after 8 years in office he still won't be in 5 place.

Stories about Storage Auctions / What is the most unique combination of item and place you have ever shipped?
« on: June 16, 2014, 04:58:52 PM »
I once shipped a motorcycle helmet to Tasmania, Australia. About 9,500 miles as the crow flies.
I also once shipped some porn to Bagram Air Force Base Afghanistan. I always wondered if it was used to lift the spirits of the American serviceman or to torture them Taliban types.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Where do you park?
« on: June 16, 2014, 04:21:20 PM »
Parking is not an issue anymore. Thankfully the hoards if newbies are gone. What gets me are these Aholes with handicap tags that park in the handicap parking spots at the facility.
Hey Ahole! To any of the Jacka$$ who are buying and CLEANING out storage units, that handicap spot is NOT for you!! It is for REAL handicap customers of the facility!
I don't care what kind of scheme you are working and claiming to be "disabled", if you are doing storage auctions for a living or even side money YOU ARE NOT HANDICAPPED!!!
Mental illness doesn't count, you can walk your happy a$$ a few more steps! By god we are walking around the freakin facility 3 times doing the auction but YOU gotta park in the handicap space?!

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: State of the Storage Auction Business
« on: June 08, 2014, 07:41:58 PM »
Oh, forgot to mention crowd size. Crowd size is pretty much back to pre-auction show normals. The only exceptions are Saturday auctions, auctions at a facility selling 40 or more units, auctions at new locations or locations who rarely have auctions. Then it's back to the madness!

Depends on the day. Generally, prices are a little lower then last year but we are no where near being back to pre-storage auction show prices. It seems those who have survived have gotten use to the "new normal" price range so people just can't back off and let prices come down. It does appear the junk rooms are getting back down to where they should be on most days, but any unit that looks nice goes to the moon!

The Treasure Chest / Re: What's the oldest item you've ever found in a locker?
« on: June 08, 2014, 07:24:40 PM »
I have found plenty of those Roman, Greek, Byzantine coins that are plus or minus 500 years the birth of Christ. Not sure that really counts since most of those being sold in catalogs or coin stores were dug out of the ground in the last 50 years. Not like they are family heirlooms passed down for generations.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Collusion between auctioneers and their favorite buyers
« on: June 02, 2014, 08:36:35 PM »
I think one of my auctioneers tries to help me out. I notice sometimes he lets me think about my bid and gives me time bid again, other times he closes the auction out on me fast and lets the other person win. I'm thinking the units he lets me think about he knows are good and the ones he closes on me fast he knows aren't so good.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Is buying storage units bad Karma?
« on: June 02, 2014, 08:30:45 PM »
I'll let you know when I start making a profit!
Seriously, it's only bad karma if you believe it is. You can pretty much psycho analyze any human endeavor and break it down into an imperfect, un-harmonious action. Is it bad karma to pump black sludge out of the ground and burn it? Is it bad karma to bulldoze forests to build houses? Is it bad karma to cut down that two year old steer in the prime of his life and stick his a$$ between two sesame seed buns?

Crew cab truck with 8 x 16 enclosed V-nose trailer. Looking to upgrade to a box truck this year. My truck and trailer combo is just too darn long to navigate around a lot of storage facilities.

What's it Worth?? / Re: Sports Cards
« on: May 28, 2014, 05:56:28 PM »
I found some sports memorabilia that was autographed so I visited these collectors to see if they could authenticate it or just buy it. Anyway I went to their warehouse, 4 floors high. I didn't get the grand tour but I saw the first floor and it was pallets upon pallets with 4' x 4' cardboard bins filled with sports cards. Sports cards were spilling over on the floor, getting moldy and water damaged from sitting so long without being moved. I would estimate the first floor was probably 15,000 to 20,000 square feet. These guys go through many (can't remember how many but A LOT) of these bins per month, each bin holds like 5,000 cards. They said they find a couple hundred cards a month good enough for Ebay. I didn't ask what the criteria for selling on Ebay was, I'm thinking $25-$50 minimum. Since seeing that operation it really took the wind out of my sails as far as getting excited about finding a card collection. These guys destroy more cards in one week then I will find in a lifetime. They didn't tell me how they manage to source so many cards each week/month. Trade secret.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Ring Tones
« on: May 27, 2014, 11:08:24 PM »Why? I love that one. Whenever it goes off and people look around I'm like yeah that's right *****es, you're standing around for free and I'm making money for doing it. It's a psychological thing!
Until they say to themselves "Oh, think your a badass reseller huh, just watch how much we make you pay for this unit!" Trust me, having Ebay cha-ching all day on the auction trail is NOT positive attention!
One of two things happens. 1. Other bidders get jealous and purposely try to run me up. 2. Other bidders figure I know what I am doing so when I bid on a unit they jump in thinking I know it's a money maker.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Do you think major finds go unreported?
« on: May 27, 2014, 11:03:07 PM »You find a collector and sell to him for cash only. Then every so often deposit 9,900 dollars in your account until it's all been deposited. You can speed up the process by depositing into several different accounts.
That won't work, it will still set of a fraudulent activity report by the bank. Yes, they are only required to notify GOV deposits over $10,000 but there are a multitude of activities that are considered suspicious and could trigger an investigation.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: What percentage of storage units advertised for auction actually get sold?

yeah, 20-30% seems about right.
