Stories about Storage Auctions / Auction Scene #3...March, 2012
« on: March 01, 2012, 10:45:06 AM »
I think the short month screwed up MovieMan's usual starting of the Auction Scene thread.  ;)

March is here and it brings a new round of auctions. Let's get those field reports coming and hopefully most of them will have a positive outcome for our boardies!!

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Firearms?
« on: February 27, 2012, 11:11:24 AM »
So a felon or ex-con can legally buy a gun in Colorado as long as it's a personal sale?

It's not legal for a felon to buy a gun, but it is legal to sell one to him.  ;)

eBay / Re: Account Sell Limits
« on: February 26, 2012, 10:34:05 PM »
I was told that's a direct violation of the eBay TOS, and that once they catch up with you they will close all of your accounts and lock you out from opening up another account.

The way I understand it is that a business account and a second personal account would be fine. I also read somewhere that ebay will allow a second seller account when the two have completely different markets.

If you sell costume jewelry and comic books, they'll allow two seller accounts so that the two specialties can be kept under different names.

I'm not sure if there is a limit to this, but something to research further if your needs permit.

eBay / Re: Postal Scale

Check out an ebay seller named ever*hotbuy.

I bought one of the accuteck 40lb max. scales from them for less than $20. Only had it a couple weeks, but I'm really liking it and between the scale and usps.gov, shipping has become a LOT easier.

Not to mention the fact that a 3 lb. max scale at wal-mart is $25...

Drew, be careful... MovieMan is looking to post XXX movies on your boards. Possibly inspired by some of the porn he found in a unit.  :P

@Cheesehead: My wife and I got a good bit of fabric and notions a couple months back and know we will make good money from it, but my big concern is properly identifying fabrics for the shopper. Just another thing to learn, I suppose.

Flea Markets / Re: My adventures at the Antique/flea market

My booth at Southern Pickers is about 6x8 $60 month and 15%.  I am lucky that is next to the check out.  It is about 5 miles away on my way to work.  I like it for selling items that are no going to bring their value at the flea and would not do well on CL or eBay.

I was curious, I ran into an ad for a "Southern Pickers" in Kingsland, TX who was having an upcoming auction.

Is this your Southern Pickers? Are you selling in the auction?

Sounds good, UGA. I do have to say, having previously managed a small retailer, that it is crucial to have some high-ticket items. They might sit there a while, but it only takes one or two customers to make your month on those high dollar pieces.

That said, I do recall someone online, maybe even these boards, saying that their "sweet spot" was the $10-$20 range. With your rental rates, it doesn't take to many sales to make it worthwhile.

Congrats and fill up that space, brother!

eBay / Re: Shipping & Boxes
« on: February 13, 2012, 01:39:26 PM »
Is there anywhere I can get a ton of padded flat rate mailers for free or cheap?

USPS.gov website. They will deliver free to your house, but you'll have to wait for them. Took about 10 days or so last time I ordered them.

You could also check your post office. My local PO doesn't have the padded mailers, but yours might have a better selection of flat rate materials.

How do I determine the shipping amount ahead of time if people live all over the U.S. and it costs a different amount to ship to different areas?  Is there a way to just put in the weight, then have the shipping automatically calculated depending on who buys it?

I use the USPS calculator and assume a far distance. I live in central texas and assume my buyer lives in maine.

I will say this. GET A SCALE!!! I also will suggest you buy one off ebay. I paid under $20 for a 40lb max scale as opposed to the one I saw at Wal-Mart, 3lb. max for $25.

I will use the flat rate when it makes sense, but now I can figure out when it makes sense and when it doesn't.

Also, look into the padded flat rate envelopes. They can actually be quite versatile.

The shipping aspect was my biggest hurdle as a new ebay seller, so I can relate to the frustration.

Picker's Paradise / Re: Box lot Auction

Your box-lot auction is similar to how my Goodwill location runs their auction. Most of it in themed lots and mostly way below retail (depending on bidders).

Looks like you found a nice new source for product!!

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Do you care who wins the unit?
« on: February 13, 2012, 10:31:59 AM »
Maybe he's still selling off all the stuff he bought!

Most likely, he's NOT selling the stuff he bought, cause he didn't have a sales strategy prior to purchasing his units.

Just sayin'.   ;)

eBay / Re: More eBay fees?????
« on: February 06, 2012, 07:07:21 PM »
obviously we all know this was because of the times selling for 0.99 cents with $50 shipping but it amazes me people still list this way. they aren't saving anything on shipping as they are now paying a fvf on shipping as well so they arent saving money and they are pissing off an alienating certain customers who have a problem with listings that are listed that way. im always surprised by how many auctions i still see with low price high shipping. i suppose only advantage is in a dispute buyers dont get shipping money back.

The other advantage is when a shopper searches for items "under $10," the $.99 + $50 shipping will still show up in the search. Will they buy? Probably not, but sellers still want people to at least see their item.

eBay / Re: Ebay items from storage lockers
« on: February 06, 2012, 10:53:11 AM »
I actually bought my scale on ebay.

It's a 40 lb. max, accurate to .1 oz. and cost less than $20 shipped.

I was shocked how much the office supply stores were charging for scales, so I checked ebay and there ya go!

Being able to weigh out items allows me to use First Class whenever possible, making shipping cheaper for the customer and costing me less in ebay fees on the shipping cost.

I do wish they offered a flat-rate box between the small and medium. Sometimes it is the best option, but that jump from $5 to $11 is pretty steep.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Resale License
« on: February 06, 2012, 10:33:55 AM »
Thank you Cobia.  Your response brings me to another question. Although I have attended a couple of auctions, I have not purchased a locker yet.  If you do, do you have to pay sales tax on it?

I am hoping to start buying lockers within a week or two..... 8)

Depending on your state, yes.

You are *supposed* to pay sales tax, but some facilities have been known to not bother collecting it. I wouldn't count on that though. Better to be safe and assume they will charge it. Figure that into your math when deciding what you would want to pay for a locker.

eBay / Re: More eBay fees?????

Someone  please correct me if i'm wrong, but these numbers don't make sense to me... I thought ebay just charged 9% whether it was the final value or shipping. These fees quoted above seem to indicate 11%?? Anyone else experiencing a hike in rate percentage?

You're right, the math seems odd, but I checked my account and everything is coming in at 9%.

Have some auctions ending later today, so I'll see what I'm charged and report back.
