General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Specialties
« on: January 10, 2014, 04:17:58 PM »
I have found that I like vintage jewelry. I don't wear alot of jewelry but I have found it to be very interesting and am learning quite a bit about it. I really didn't realize how expensive some of it can be. It doesn't hurt that I have several pricey pieces from a couple of units. I have been building my Etsy store and am doing quite well with it. Another plus is it doesn't take up alot of room.

Stores / New year new store
« on: January 09, 2014, 05:05:02 PM »
I didn't acutely change locations but I have decided to rearrange everything. How often do those of you that have a store completely change everything? I was just thinking that maybe old customers would see pieces I have had for awhile if I made it all different. I change areas quite often as pieces leave but I haven't done this big of a change since I opened. I am hoping that it helps in sales during this slow time of the year.

The very first unit I bought was a multiple unit. She had two and they both went the same day. If I knew now what I didn't know then I would have bought both. Live and learn.
There were a few things that I am sure were in the other unit (mostly the rest of the china dish sets) but mostly everything was whole. The second unit was bedroom stuff and not near as good as the first in my opinion.
The lady that bought it was not very nice when I asked her about it. She seemed irritated with me so I backed off. She left shortly after we talked and I didn't see her there again. I was hoping we could maybe put some of the sets back together and make some deals but oh well. That buyer still comes to auctions and she is still not very nice but not just to me to everyone.

I started keeping king sized pillow cases. No need to spend money on trash bags for things you want to go through later. Reuse them on the next one.

I also have a unit owner I have been watching for the last year. He is the ex owner of the facility and had three units. When I bought the first one he came and talked to me. He wanted some personals back but couldn't remember if they were in that unit or one of the other two he owned. Some of the personal items he wanted back were guns. They were not in the unit I bought. His other two units (he told me the unit numbers) have come up once but didn't auction. I'm sure he probably got the guns out but the first unit was a very good one so I am hoping the others are just as good.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Manager's "special"

I'm with HomeGrown. I have purchased a few Managers units. They were not bad. You just have to bid on what you see.

I do think that whom ever is doing the auction should let the buyers know but that doesn't always happen. I am always wary when I get to an auction and there are more units than legal notices. Defiantly causes a red flag for me. It makes me look a lot closer at what is in a unit and how it is presented.

Always some kind of order around here. Either from one side to the other or back to front. I have never felt like there was a best first or last.

Locally the auctions have not been posted on Auctionzip lately. I find that the legal notices posted in the county news paper have a big turnout. There are a few city papers and one for lack of a better word "rag" that some use to advertise their auctions. The turnouts for those are usually very small. I spilled the beans to one longtime regular last year about the "rag". Really wanted to kick myself when they said they didn't know that there were legal notices posted in it.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #1....January, 2014

This morning there were two units and five buyers. First unit 10 X 15 stuffed full. First thing I saw were five mattresses. Yuck! Went for $300.00 to the only newbie there. Second unit 10 X 10 not much but a few things with potential. I bid Went for $60.00 to a regular. Was to much for my liking. Hope we have some good prices tomorrow at the piece auction. Need a few fillers for the store. It has been a busy couple of weeks.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Cost to rent a 10 x 15 locker

I rent a 10 X 10 for $75.00 but that is on the cheap side. 10 X 15 units go from $120 to $150. I asked on a 10 X 30 that would have fit a large RV awhile back because it was packed and there would have been no way to move it all out in the time allotted. They charge $300 for that one.

This last unit I bought I hired a friend to help me with. Lots of heavy lifting and I couldn't do it myself. She is having a very hard time with all of this stuff.
Seems the mom was in pain management and didn't take very good care of her children. She bought every toy you can imagine for her kids. Everything is filthy! The clothes are gross and every surface is drawn on. The mom obviously didn't pay any attention to her kids. I believe by a few pieces of mail in the unit that the kids were taken away. I don't have a problem with this but my friend feels sorry for these people even though she doesn't know them.
Anyone ever have a unit where the story you put together tugs at your heart strings? I haven't yet but this is a business to me and I try not to get emotionally involved.

If you were dealing with anything in Texas two weeks ago there was a delay from Fed-x and UPS due to weather. Tracking numbers were slow to issue and when they did the package sat at the drop-off location for several days. I had several things shipped to me for Christmas and was worried they wouldn't get here in time. Not sure about the rest of the country though.

I agree HomeGrownPromos. I can't imagine how much time it would take to get everything on the floor if I had to enter it before. Normally if the box looks good I will just set it out until I can get to it for pricing and stocking shelves. I do use Quickbooks for simple data entry because I use it for the other two businesses I run but I have no intention to use anything more than the cash register to keep track of sales.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Has anyone found pre 1900 photographs?
« on: December 26, 2013, 11:47:28 PM »
I fortunately had a lady stumble across me that was looking for old photos. I now collect them in a small box and when it gets full I call her. She gives me 50 to 100 dollars and then she sells them. She travels around the country in her motor  home selling at different shows. I like that I don't have to deal with them but make some money. I have dealt with her three times and I have never felt like she has taken me on prices.
