Picker's Paradise / Re: Picking at estate sales
« on: February 16, 2013, 04:24:43 PM »
Today was a total bust tying to pick estate sales.
$20 in gas and $15 at a food truck......came home with nothing.

Plan was to hit three but were so bad went out of my way to others.
Prices were high and really not much there.   Good deals if you were looking to get almost new kitchen stuff and home decor items for personal use.  But way to high of prices for resale.

Ran into one of the thrift store guys and he was buying just because he needs inventory.  Said everything he's gotten in past month is smalls with a $1-$5 markup.

One estate company was actually apologizing.   Said they spent a week going thru and cleaning and organizing the house.  Left on Tuesday and when they showed up Friday the house was half empty!
Family came in and took everything of value.  All the tools, 90% of kitchen, antiques and art.....

They had negotiated a full clean out. So on top of paying 3 people a weeks pay to clean/organize/price, 4 people to work sale.....they still have to empty and clean the house, donate goods and pay dump fee's.

Said there isn't even enough left to sell to cover cost.  The home owners came today and they were trying to figure out a flat fee but to no resolve.

I don't know how you would even sue?   How do you figure your losses in something like that?

are you going to start telling people that I kick puppies too?

I don't know why but literally lol'd on this.   Fom now on, You shall no longer be called Travis.  You will be referred to as PuppyKicker!

Me?   I have everything on a set of shelves.   Tho, it's starting to be piled.   Not as organized as it once was.

My roommate on the other hand.  He filled the downstairs living room "to sort and organize" about six months ago......hasn't been touched since.  He is a hoarder I thinking.  He loves to buy.....doesn't sell.

I have to admit I have two wrecked cars waiting to be parted and a row of appliances on the side of the house.   But can't see them from street.  In fact, he way he house is built on a hill you can't see them from any place.   Why its all still there.  Out of sight, out of mind......

Do you really feel sorry for the guy? I don't. He was a arrogant drug addict who flaunted his money.

I feel sorry for his girlfriend, his parents, and other family members, but I refuse to feel sympathy toward someone who committed such a selfish act against the people who loved him.

I totally agree with the first part, with exception.  He was as a** on TV.  So I don't care. And I didn't know him so its of no consequence to me.
However, that's not the real person as far as I know.  I'm not going to judge someone I've never met.
I still have empathy for his loved ones and his troubles that led him to feel suicide was the best option.

As far as suicide, its a persons own choice.  Doesn't make a person a coward.  In fact it takes a lot to take your own life.

People blame the person comitting suicide and call them a coward to shift guilt and blame off themselves.
If the person was so close to you and you cared so much.....where were you when they needed help the most?    And if you didn't know them, your in no position to judge.

Speaking from personal experience and ill never forgive myself when looking back I could have done so much more for my friend of 25 years.  His suicide wasn't on him at all.  It's on all of us, his friends and family.  I own that.  Shifting blame and anger over it by calling him a coward doesn't help me heal or grow or become a better person or friend.  And certainly doesn't honor his memory.

What's it Worth?? / Re: vinyl 45's
« on: February 13, 2013, 05:07:40 PM »
Vinyl is hard to value.   Not only condition of vinyl but sleeve and jacket can raise/drop price significantly.

And wht press it was and where.   I had a few that a quick search showed they were in the $150-$300 range.
Further research reveled it was worth about $2 since it was pressed by the American label and not the British label.

I know a guy that buys thousands of LP's bulk.  Out of all he buys in a year only a handful are worth much.  Rest are sold off in the $1-$5 range....and he has a record shop as well as online store.

I'd google something like 'most valuable albums'  or 'artist' something.  Get a list of most wanted and then search thru your pile.    Or start entering each on eBay, at least older ones.....or just take $100 and call it a day.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: The Storage Auction Pro

Finally got to it.   Good read.   Like MM said, only good for someone new to this but pretty sure that was your target demographic.

Let a few fiends not in the business check it out.  All good reviews and found informative.  Didnt make any of them want to go to an auction but they did say they now have an idea of what i do.  Pretty good since I've never been able to explain it.....or how it's not like TV.   That alone tells me you did well.

Good read.    Will promote it around to the newbies at auctions.....

Oh yeah!

I went picking this weekend and cut out some stops when I put in $20 and got less than 1/4 tank.....

Considering I have to rent a truck my auctions get closer to home as gas prices go up.  They tend not to let you rent at one location then return at another if its "local".    Means drive to auction, drive home, drive truck to facility, dive home.....could be 200-300miles.  Truck and gas adds another $100-$150?

Ill jut stay local and pay more for a unit.  Save myself the hassle.

Donations & Taxes / Re: Donation Value Guide

Yeah, but I was hoping that know that there is someone here with greater knowledge you might know a loophole or two.   ;D

My father was an accounting fraud investigator (not income tax).  His thing is finding theft from you, not if your cheating your taxes.  Some cross over but not to many people/business owners skim funds or cheat on their taxes then hire a forensic accountant to go over their books.....

He's good but years retired and not up to date on current codes.

Thanks for the info on the 8283.   I've never been auited by IRS but never knew how detailed they wanted it filled out.    Like I said, my income vs deductions isn't something that would raise question. Pretty straight forward returns.    Next year is going to be more work.   Paying own health insurance (COBRA) and surgery in future so co-pays, mileage, medication......
Unless something changes financially I'm probably going to have more deductions than income.  That's going to raise some eyebrows.....and the reason behind my questions of carrying forward donation to future years.

So say I donate goods ten times this year to goodwill. Each donation is $100 of goods.  Total=$1000.

Do I need to keep records of where I got items and cost?   Or is $500+ in ONE donation trip.

And can I write off donations made in my name?

The Treasure Chest / Re: Best Storage Locker of 2012
« on: February 09, 2013, 05:18:20 PM »
Didnt really know the value of knives.  An estate had a ton of knives and people were lined up just to get in for them.   First 20 or so people walked out with bags of knives!

Maybe next garage sale I will order some knives in bulk.  Even if not marked up much I can advertise and use them to draw a crowd......

The Treasure Chest / Estate pick
« on: February 09, 2013, 05:11:13 PM »
Some nice estate sales today.....

Best pick:

Looking thru basement and found a dirty old canvas bag with leather bottom.  Ws pretty cool so pulled it out to see if I would be able to clean it up.  Inside was a bunch of chisels.   I've done okay with them before but it's a hit or miss if you don't know about them....which I don't.  I've got some that turned out to be worthless even tho they *looked* expensive.

These looked decent enough so asked worker how much for it all.  Did the "I really just want bag but the tools are kind cool.....I haven't even really looked whts in here...."

He said $20.  I rushed to cashier and got out of there.

Sitting here now researching.  They are all  S.J. ADDIS. or JP ADDIS.  Made in England.  SJ being mid-1800's and JP up to 1920's.    SJ considered to be the finest made back in the day.

There is 14 in total and a bunch of other stuff that I don't really know what they are yet.  Some small vise's, punches.....

The chisels I need to research price some more but have found them to go for $30-$150 each.
I have to figure out exactly what I have.   Should get at least $400 out of this pick and <crossing fingers> possibly upwards or over $1000.

Nope.  But that would be awesome.   I'd so sleep in it.....

bbutler247,

I don't do drafts, so can't help you with that.

I use the CL App.  It keeps all your listings.  Nice since its easy to repost, update....
Downside is I have a huge list of items that have sold. Don't know how to delete them.

Donations & Taxes / Re: Donation Value Guide

Ahhh, I see.

Yeah, if it was all donated goods you might have some flags.

The 50% is total donations.   Like campaign contributions.  Even then, your right.  50% is high for your average person.

You and I might get away with it if it was only every few years.   We build up items, then donate.
Do it every year? Might raise an eyebrow or two.

The tough deduction is medical mileage.   You have to be so diligent on your record keeping.  Where, when, why, how far, cross referenced with bill.....
Only reason I like co-pays.   Can write all the info on back of receipt.
