General Storage Auction Talk / Re: My first Unit!

The top two are for sure routers, not really used for telephones, but for computers. The size of the jack tells it. The ones for computers are bigger, while the ones for phones are smaller.

Doing a little bit of research for you:
Top one: ADC TrueNet, brand new cost between $135 - $200
Middle one: HP ProCurve Switch 2626 Brand new $172 - $599 (depending if it is a powered model)
Bottom one: APC Smart UPS SC 450 (this is like a physical firewall to a network): Brand new $111 - $125

Not sure what the resell value is, I imagine all together you would be able to get anywhere from $300 - $450. Not bad at all, especially with all the other office furniture. Got a real good deal on your locker.

I deal with computers alot, that is where my education is at, Network Admin. Cheers :)

Phone server thingy, I cant remember exactly what they are called, but if it is a newer one, you can sell those for a good size amount of money.

Only thing I ever do with them, if they are the ones that record, is take them apart, and get the hard drive out of them, that is sellable. Everything else I toss.

Stores / Re: Booth space versus full store - I bit the bullet
« on: June 10, 2011, 11:34:16 PM »
After having so many smalls and collectibles and and and (yall know the drill) My wife and I decided to take an interim step between nothing and a store. We rented a booth at a local antique and gift mall. It runs 190 a month for a 10x10. Nice thing is they let you do basically what you want within the booth and the best part is I'm not there as the stuff sells. The buyers browse, load the carts take it to the front and it gets sold. Ive now sold antique and vintage furniture, jewelry, glassware, collectibles old newspapers all that stuff that wouldn't sell on CL and wasn't quite enough caliber to go on ebay etc. It's working fine for us. I've covered the first two months rent in the first ten days open and i'm into making profit now!!! A side benefit is my wife is now involved and loves setting up and keeping up with "the shop" as she puts it. Lotsa benefits there when Mama's happy the world is at peace..hahahaha...just another avenue for getting rid of a lot of stuff. Actually, Young Gun on here told me his dad had a booth and was working it so that's how I got interested. Yall should check it out in your area (I'm north of Atlanta). It's not surprising in a down economy that people are looking for bargains especially on some of those semi luxury items they still want to buy. It's a way to go......

Thats fantastic, might be something I need to check into.

Not here in Atlanta. All us regulars still seeing a lot of newbies and way too high prices. Went to an auction yesterday with 6 units. Biggest unit was a 10x20 with two old mattress sets, some old furniture (living room) a washer and dryer and an old rear projection big screen with a few boxes and bags all looked in very used condition to crappy. The damn thing went for $970.00 to a newbie / almost newbie. Then there was the small unit a 10x10 that had two metal self assembled shelves, a kids bicycle(toddlers) an old partical board computer desk BROKEN and in pieces and one box that sold for $80.00. You could have bought the shelves new a walmart for under 30 and all the rest was landfill fodder. I'm just hopeing things ease up here. This is getting rediculous.

lol, they thought they hit a gold mine because of the old projection tv. Happened here in my area too.

I have DVR, so I record every Auction Hunter and Storage Wars shows. Then I just watch at my convience. Just got through watching them now. My question is where is that place in North Texas that Auction Hunters went to? I am intrigued and want to go there myself with about $3000.

For trucks go to Home Depot instead of Uhaul. It's $24 for I believe 3 hours no additional mileage charges just gotta return it with a full tank. They have cargo vans or F250's with high sides, cant beat that deal, no 0.99 cents a mile or any of that garbage.

Home Depot is also super quick to get in and out of you rent them in the tool rental area. I was out in 2 min. I don't think I've ever rentd a uhaul truck or trailer and had it take less than 30 or 40 min.

Those box trucks sound like a decent deal however why drop 7k before you even know you want to do this ft/ theres money to be made, etc. Test the waters before investing 7k in a truck. Also do you have a place to store a box truck?

My one other point and this is huge aas I've helped my cousin do cleanouts property preservation, etc. If you got a ton of two of garbage and a dump truck takes a whole 2 min to empty it. If you have a box truck expect to pay 2-3 guys for a couple hours to empty out that truck.

Is that all Home Depots? I dont remember seeing any trucks there I could rent.

What I have been hearing from the Vets in my area is if anything there is even more lockers in my area. Now I cant say for sure, since I myself am not a vet. Just thought I put my two cents in.

I personally dont consider myself as being fulltime at auctions. I run a few different small businesses while I go to auctions. It is great to have another income coming in when auctions aint doing so good. I have not been out in like a month now, and I am hoping I will be out there mid summer. That is when I am expecting alot of people drop out because of the heat. This way I should steal a few lockers way under from what they are selling at now.

First off, I am agreeing with what Movieman is saying to you.

And to put forth my own input as well. I am not saying in any form or fashion that you are not a hard worker. However let me strongly advise you NOT TO QUIT YOUR JOB. Yes you can make a living doing this, and you have plenty of money saved up to last for a good long while to support yourself and this new business venture. I have seen people come in and do extremely well with less than what you have. However I have also seen people with even more money come in and lose everything within 6 months.

This business is unlike any others, most of it is a gamble, and you might not be buying any lockers, for a decent price, everytime you go out to auctions. The bigger your city, the better chances you have. But that is not always the case. And to make a living in this business will take time, it does not happen over night. (For the most part that is). You would have to learn the resell business inside and out. Build a contact list for inventory, and establish a relationship with these people. Also need to learn how to value things on the spot so you do not overspend on a unit. If you have the space, I would concentrate on lkrs full of furniture. Solid wood furniture that is. That seems to do better than anything else.

My suggestion to you is, wait till you have vacation from your job, during this time, try out the storage auction business. This way you can get your feet wet, and get a feel for this business before you quit your job. At least then you will know whether or not you will like it.

Real storage auction, IS NOT LIKE THE SHOWS, I REPEAT NOT LIKE THE SHOWS. They dont show all the hard work, or all the crappy units they buy before they get a good lkr. Keep these odds in mind, for every 20 lkrs you buy, expect 19 of them to be utter crap, especially in the beginning.

Good luck, and I hope to hear how things go.
