Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: What was he thinking?
« on: January 25, 2012, 09:50:22 AM »
Hmm - from what you described he wasn't thinking.  Or he figured it would get that high if was a bidding war and thus jumped the bid to scare poeple off.  Yet still, he didn't want it to be a long day drawing out $5 and $10 bids on $200+ lockers and jumped the bid.

It happens - one of our regulars in last caravan opened up with $150 on a locker to get the ball started.  Wanted to stop people starting at $10 - $20 and then going up in $10s till price is like $400+.  He got stuck with the locker.  Had a nice tool chest in the front and the rest furniture.  I was going to open at $50 (what chest was worth).  He got the locker and lost $120 as the furniture was just parts and pieces.  No complete sets or even like a complete table.

Flea Markets / Re: Weather conditions
« on: January 25, 2012, 07:48:30 AM »
This questions is really dependant on your location and what your "customers" are use to.  If you live in the South of say Virginia then that weather by now is nice and many people venture out in it.  30s in my part of GA and like FL is on the colder side and most people stay home.  As I've said in other post our local flea has a 40% reduction in traffic during the winter months.

Also, this is the last weekend of the month.  Many people don't have extra cash at the end of the month.  I normally try and hit the flea right after payday.  Specially for those people that get paid only once a month.

Like money said - go if it's not windy / rainy.  You may only break even or make a little money.  However, you will learn tons of stuff your first time out.  Think about how you setup, where you setup, what were people looking at, etc.  You should do some sells just to the regular vendors.  They will be picking you over before you even get setup normally.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: [Update] First auctions on Wednesday!
« on: January 25, 2012, 07:17:43 AM »
That is the best attitude to have right now.  Prices have gone back up and people are paying big money on crap.  When you don't get in bidding contest you come out ahead in the long run.  Even if you miss out on a few lockers.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Researching Tenants
« on: January 25, 2012, 07:15:43 AM »
Public Storage is doing the 3 facilities in my area Thursday.  Been told by many of the regulars it's not worth it most times.  Have work so will miss them anyways.

As for researching owners - if I have some time I'll do a quick search of the name on the newspaper website.  I'm just looking for death notices or divorce notices.  I love getting divorce lockers as many times the woman has taken out her stuff and abandones all the guys stuff.  If it's the reverse I bid lower as most guys will have done sold jewelry and crap.

Other then that for the most part I don't bother.  Like you said it's more about the locker then anything else.

I sold a bunch of lighters that worked for $.25 each.  I tossed a ton of them that didn't work, even if they looked pretty cool.  Unless it is an "older" lighter they are so mass produced to be worthless.  Only one I kept was a 6" lighter of a Bass.  It doesn't work but with all the fishing nuts around here it may sell just for the looks.

Lol - Dave just kills me.  Was watching the show with my wife.  When that locker opened I was like, hmm 200 - 400 locker depending on crowd in my area.  CA price - 1k.  Before they even started to dig I said - watch him say he'll double / triple his money.  Starts to dig and tosses a bag full of cloths out - $30.  I'm trying very hard not to scream at the tv saying WTF are you talking about.  Not even looked in the bag to see if it's stained, rags, etc. and it's $30.

Heck at Dave's prices I have $360 just sitting under my sort table I've yet to cash in.  Those rocks/minerals I could prob sell for $200 or so in my area.  They are not common here like they are out west.  Only thing we get is the small polished stones from the mountains / tourist areas.

Jarrod and B's tool locker - $400 - $800 here.  That was a nice locker IMO, but not worth 4k.  I think all the tools were craftsman also.  If were snap-on would be worth more.  The cart they had in the unit is the same type that I pulled out of a unit last month.

All that new furniture in Darrell's and Jarrod / Bs unit would sell for about 1/2 retail here.  Still would of been good money.  Just would of been slow to sell.  You would have lots of money tied up in inventory.

As for the SW:Texas promo - saw the ring being appraised for $30k.  I'm just sitting there going oh sure.  They put a $30k ring in a storage locker instead of a saftey deposit box which cost the same as a small unit.

Really wondering how bad Feb is going to be when people get tax money back.

I'm just starting to hate cloths.  I've donated a ton of them to Goodwill now.  Finally went over the 3 huge boxes I had in the shed.  Many of them hit the trash, the rest to Goodwill.  Now I have 8 trash bags full under my main sorting table to look in.  Trying to figure out how to sell the kids jerseys and things I have.  Most of them are football which is about over.  So try and sell or hold till next fall?  I spent some time to take pictures.  Think I may use up the last of my free listings next week and post them for $3 each on ebay.  I don't care if only make $1 after fee's I just want these things gone.

Cold has made me lazy - keep trying to sort the cloths for Ebay lots and then find something else (almost anything else) to do :)

Like anything else Fayettenam it's mostly luck on that site.  I've gotten a few "cheap" items off the site and then have been outbid on stuff countless times.  I normally just figure out my max, plug it in, and forget about it.

Not a bad day but not great either.  Anything under a $100 is a so/so day to me when you spend 6 hours or so at the flea.  Least you got rid of some inventory that you really didn't want to keep.

Saturday crowds are generally better then Sunday I'm told.  However, I've had a few weekends that I did better on Sunday then Saturday.  Don't know if it was due to crowds or different inventory with the higher end stuff selling.  Prob a mix of both.

Good luck this coming weekend.  I always try and setup on the first payday weekend of month.

Flea Markets / Re: Flea market prices
« on: January 23, 2012, 10:26:02 AM »
Lol Cobia - that is just too funny.

As for prices - sometimes I think you can price an item too low and thus it don't sell.  But if you price it higher and let them "talk" you down it sells.  I've had a few items like that.  Sit and don't move at the $1-$3 range.  Jack the price up to $5 - $10 and they sell at that price or a little lower after some haggling.  I'm like seriously - you could of gotten it for $1 last week.

As said it has to be a psych thing.  I still remember this one person who in Oct asked me about this 1 item I had for $5.  He didn't buy it.  Then in Nov, he comes by and picks up the same item I now have priced at $20 and buys it.  I just smile and say Thank You.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: How far are you willing to travel?
« on: January 22, 2012, 08:03:26 AM »
I don't travel beyond my local area for the most part.  Further then that 30 mile radius and you really need to take a trailer with you in case you win something.  Then if you don't you have spent all that gas for nothing.

Now - when I'm going to other places for something specific already I'll try and hit up and auction or two.  Mostly just to see what the other places are like but also in case I score a small locker that fits in my truck.  Searching now for auctions down in Statesboro on the 4th.

Good luck Money.  Must be nice to live in FL.  Going to be raining still Sunday here.  Thinking of trying to hit flea on the 4th of Feb.  Just not sure the weather will be worth it.  Have a number of jackets, long sleeve shirts, and just opened a box full of hats (many sock hats), few heaters, etc. that have gotten of late.  If don't sell it now have to hold till Oct or so.  I hate holding onto inventory, even if I do it.

That is why I always like to have a second pair of eyes on a unit.  It's like the first auction of the month.  One of the regulars and I were looking at a unit together.  We saw something and both looked.  Went outside and discussed it - both saw the riding lawnmower in the back behind some furniture.  We were the only ones that did, so they got the unit pretty cheap.

As for talking up a crap unit - we do that many times when have a crowd of newbies.  A few of us regulars will get into a small bidding war and then some newbie will jump in.  Then another will jump in on that newbie and a bidding war breaks out.  The regulars sit back and smile at each other.

Ouch - they don't let you bring additional tables in?  Think I'd pass on that place.  Our flee you get a 10 x 10 space for $12 that comes with a wood table.  You can really get more then a 10x10 space by using some of your parking space.  They really don't care much how you setup unless someone complaines.

I really wish I had a thirft store I could consign some stuff at.  In my area all of those stores are some of the very people I compete against for lockers.

Glad I didn't sell today as the 50% chance of rain has turned into light to heavy rain and now severe thundershowers (lost power once already).

Called the Saturday caravan to verify next week.  I was told it was canceled.  They canceled the auction and moved it to Feb 11th (not normal sat for them).  The reason - to wait for most people to have tax money back.  I was like oh good grief - it's already bad enough w/ the newbies.  Now we will have them out in force with 2-4k earned income tax checks.  This place will also be 2 full months of no auctions.  Currently the 1 place I spoke with had 23 lockers going up.  Will be MLK day all over again.
