General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Joined the 500 club!
« on: July 05, 2012, 12:23:31 PM »

But enough of that. I have to go start a thead called: "Why I stay in this business despite the influx of newbies"....wait, that won't work...crowds are slowing down. How about: "At last crowds are slowing down...I can stay in the business."

How about "Crowds are slowing down, maybe in a few months I can pay off my loan and get my car title back!"  Then we can segway into a new TV series slash get rich quick business opportunity, "Title Pawn Wars" Watch as three shops battle to win customers in this high stakes competition where the winning shop can end up charging anywhere from 200% to 1000% returns on a vehicle title loan! When the customers don't pay, they get *****in' rides!!
que the video of Bentleys, Ferraris, Lamborghinis being brought in for title loans... LOL!!!

In consideration of the dwindling interest in this forum, and the immediate rantings of PappaPump, I will try to add some value to this forum and talk about a recent find. Although purhaps not that interesting, it's the best I got right now  ;)

In a recent storage unit I won I have what appears to be most of the main parts to an above ground pool. At first glance it appears I may be missing hardware (nots, screws, bolts, that sort of thing) put have the main components including the instruction manual. When things slow down a bit I am going to do a mock up assembly of all the pieces in the back yard and try to assertain what I am missing and if it is economically feasible to purchase the missing parts and make sure all the parts I have are not damaged. I have no idea what kind of market there is in a used complete above ground pool, or it's component parts, but if it turns out there is not much money in reselling it, and it won't be a big hassle time or money wise I may just keep it and install it in the back yard.

Thats all I got right now, enjoy!

The Treasure Chest / Re: My Locker Find

I might be confused, but I thought I read a post here months ago from another forum member (Bandit?) who said Brandy & Jarrod were their neigbors in Boston and got their start in re-selling by flipping computers on Craigslist and fixing up used cars?

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Staged unit story
« on: July 05, 2012, 08:45:34 AM »
Can't believe I am going to say this but, you could rent a unit at a facility that is not access controlled, NOT go into default, just advertise your own "auction" on Craigslist and see how it goes.

Problem 1: What happens when winning bidder thinks he/she has been duped and wants to talk to either you or the facility manager (who would know nothing about it)?

Problem 2: Depending on how well it's staged, with the crowds going down, maybe even a staged unit wouldn't sell for as high as it would say 6 months ago. Would it be worth the trouble?

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Bought my First locker the other day
« on: July 01, 2012, 05:24:44 PM »
You seemed to be referencing why regulars would pass on this unit, and others have already touched on this and I will add my prospective to it.

It's called opportunity cost. I'm not gonna use up space in my trailer for an obviously marginal unit when there are other units yet to be auctioned. I am not going to buy a unit that is not worth the fuel costs to hook up a trailer and come back and get it.

Now if I have already won atleast one unit at that location, and this is the last or next to last unit, and the price is right, sure it might bid on it.

You might be asking "why not just show up to the auctions towing your trailer so you don't have to go back and get it?"

2 reasons: 1. I don't want all the regulars to know what kind of resources I have. 2. I don't want the noobies "birddoging" me. They see me or you pulling a big trailer or driving a box truck, they might just wait and bid on everything I do figuring I know what I'm doing and know which units are good.

Most of us have had those "I bought a unit for $1 and made $43.72!" But once you start doing this for a while, trust me, you will let somebody else have those.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #6...June, 2012
« on: July 01, 2012, 05:01:21 PM »
I know it's July, but I wanted to give a report from the last week of June. This was our "big" auction week in the region. 5 auctions, 2 being multiple facility caravans.

Crowds: WAY down, 2 auctions had less then 10 people show up! WOW! The most crowded was one of the caravans with about 35 to 40, a few months ago it was double that.

Prices: All over the place, but nominally trending doward. I ended up winning 6 units over the week. Some were good buys, others I still paid to much for. 2 units look like good money makers, 2 units look like OK money makers, 1 looks to be break even, and 1 looks to be a loser.

The best units were won on the hottest day, so the heat was my ally. All units had there fair share of mattresses and boxsprings so another reason why I was able to win them for the price I wanted.

Don't know how much the heat played a part in the auctions, but the few who showed up seemed to be mostly fresh faces and lookie-loos at that. Not as much wild first time bidding from newbies like I have been seeing over the previous 6 months.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Wasted morning....
« on: June 28, 2012, 07:20:24 AM »
Just pick up some Mexicans at the Home Depot the morning of the auction so you have help cleaning out and moving a decent unit. No units won, no problem, just buy them lunch and through them a few bucks for their time, but atleast you don't have to pass up all the good units cause of your condition.

Craigslist / Re: CL iPad app
« on: June 27, 2012, 07:30:54 AM »
OK, but can you enlighten me on:

1) why you use the iPad to list (instead of your home computer)
2) why you would then later use the home computer to renew or delete

Still trying to figure out the advantage for folks of posting from an iPad or phone.

I have heard people say they like to photo and post merchandise staight from the unit before they move it or just leave it there and sell from the unit to save time. I never really understood this because everything I get needs to be inspected, cleaned, & researched before I post it for sale. There are very few things I find in a unit that are "ready to sell" the way they are found.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Clothes- how does everyone do?

F$$K Plato's closet n the dbag kids that work there! I would burn all the clothes I had before selling them a thing! Just my opinion  ;)

and yes, I have tried to sell there, what a con job!

All depends on the size of the city/market you live in and how many people with the means and courage to buy a high quality but used refrigerator. Where I live, it would be pushing it to try to get $500 even though it is well worth it, I would probably have to sell for around $300, but if you come from a large metro area you may be able to get your price.

I think I would have won Door #1 for $16, Door #2 for $140 & Door #3 for $145.  ;D

The way its been around here for a long while now Door #1 would have gone for $50-$75, Door $2 would have gone for $175-$225, & Door number #3 would have gone for $250-$300 easy. Door #4 would have gone for about the same price, and Door #5? I wouldn't be surprised if it went for $500-$700 (everybody thinks there a professional picker now so the crowd would have gone ape sh$t over the peddle cars!)

If you are using Ebay then you are already ahead of most people. The truth is used clothes are a "dime a dozen" in this country, pun intended. You can try consignment stores for the better quality clothes and for the rest try bulk lots on Craigslist. When you get to having a warehouse full of clothes you can condense them into shipping bales and sale them to exporters.

Better call the law, cause I've dropped a number of units on folks too!!

Simple rules of storage auctions:

1. Buyer Beware!
2. Nobody twists your arm to place the highest bid, you are responsible for your own actions. How other people bid, or the quality of the property inside the unit after you win are of no consequence.
3. When two or more people collude to depress the price of a unit, bid them up!!
4. When two or more people collude to elevate the price of a unit, stop bidding!!

Simple as that  ;)
