General Storage Auction Talk / Re: How to get it moved
« on: May 20, 2013, 06:16:42 PM »
Up to this point the method I've used is just to load it myself. I load everything I can with my van. The bigger pieces sit in the unit until I HAVE to get it out. If the facility gives me 3 days to vacate, I put an ad up on craigslist for those items and sell from that unit. Anything that doesn't sell goes into a U-Haul. By myself and a hand truck I can load just about anything. You should see some of the crazy looks I get moving a sectional couch by myself.

That being said, going into the summer is not going to be fun.. I may have to invest in some muscle on those hot summer days.

I wonder if Ebay is just talking about the semantics. If the KKK or Ku Klux Klan verbage was left out of the title/description, would it have been removed?

Bought a locker on Thursday.. It's a loser I think.. Got a bed frame, wood, repainted.. badly. A decent round side table with drawer, antique-y.. another chair that is antique-y (but just found out it was broken and repaired).. The winner of the locker is a 1949 Philco 1100 radio. In decent shape. The plug is falling apart so I can't test to see if it powers on, etc. Can't find anything regarding sales for a value.. If someone wants to help me out with that, I'd appreciate it!

What? You mean my $75 investment won't turn into $2.5m.?? I thought Western Union uses @kimo.com email addresses now!

He is getting more and more pathetic each week. He's like a jealous boyfriend..

Seems kinda fishy that they're bringing in new auctioneers for the 2nd broadcast each week. I think they're doing a market test with these new auctioneers to see if they can move the Dotson's out..

Some storage facilities have a policy where they stop the bidding if the unit reaches a certain dollar amount...probably for some legal reason.

I can appreciate that. At Public Storage, once the bid gets to $1,000 the management has to call the DM to get approval to continue. This one was kinda fishy though..

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Rims & Tires
« on: May 16, 2013, 07:25:46 AM »
I don't post them to ebay because it's cost prohibitive to ship. It'll cost more for the shipping than the tire, in many cases. I have a used tire contact here in town that I bring all my used tires and rims to. If it's a good tire, he'll buy it from me. If it's not a good tire, he'll recycle it for me. Most rims he will buy if they're the standard black/white iron rims or stock OEM. He won't take aftermarket.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Do's and Don'ts for taking pics

Around here, it's okay as long as you clear it with the management and auctioneer. One auctioneer announces it to the crowd as part of his auction rules. After the sale, as long as it's cool with the winning bidder, nobody can tell you to stop, IMO. So many people use the flash on their camera phones as flashlights around here, it's tough to tell who's using the light, or who's using the camera.

The only time I've endured a locker that was cancelled after the locker was opened was a really crummy situation. They opened the door, lots of great.. I mean GREAT furniture. High end stuff like Henkel Harris. The bidding got up to $1,500 and the property manager conducting the auction stopped bidding. Told us she was calling her boss, who decided to stop the auction because "the tenant made a partial payment".. I think that's code for "there's some really good stuff in there and we want it for ourselves."

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: What about Sundays?
« on: May 15, 2013, 09:32:36 PM »
In my neck of the woods, (NC) I've never seen a Sunday auction, let alone a caravan. If there were, I wouldn't be inclined to attend anyway. I'd be at the flea market selling what I bought during the week. One thing I do miss out on is yard sales on the weekend because I'm at the flea market.. One guy was telling me today that he does better picking yard sales than at storage auctions.. and he buys A LOT.

But I digress.. Around here Sundays are most definitely reserved for church. At the flea market, we don't get traffic until 1-2 p.m. at best.

This should have been written:  "the journalist followed the law and auction regulation and returned personal item to previous owner".   But no, had to boost their ego, not report that fact, and make themselves look good.

It's not law in every state that personals be returned to the owner. In NC, it's not the law. The buyer of the unit owns everything. I return the personals as a courtesy.. mostly because they're of no value to me.

Yeah, you're right. The boxes are tied to an account with a past due balance.. Although, they did say that the access card dept may issue a new card on these boxes so that I can use them.. but highly unlikely.

I've never had the need to look into rental rates in Cali.. But if a guy has a $500k house and is in the twilight of his life, it may make sense to sell the house and rent depending on his situation. If he has no intention or desire to leave his home to his children or whomever, he could downsize his lifestyle and rent a 2 bedroom whatever for about $1,000/mo. If he rents for 20 years, that's $240k.. Yeah he may be a little young for that option. I could just delete this post, but I'm too lazy..

I think he would be a terrible auctioneer. Say what you want about Dotson, but his cadence is one of the best.. Comparing to the guys around here, of course. Around these parts, there's an auctioneer who uses "homina" as in homina homina homina as part of his cadence.. I think he's saying "How many." but it comes out homina because of his NC country accent.
