I also ask this because at one point there is this statement:

In my opinion, Storage wars is as fake as a three dollar bill. Yes, I know I said that it all looked real, but as I see more episodes, I am picking up on the game. Last nights show in Las Vegas called auction Royale was the icing on the cake. I never share an opion until I am sure. So in my opinion Storage Wars must be put on the shelf with all the rest. After living in Las Vegas for 9 years of my young life, and working for casinos in managment postions, I can tell you alot about these Las Vegas epsiodes. In part one, you need to watch to see the cast and crew are staying at the Golden Nugget downtown. ( Wow a hit show and they don't even get the Palms Hotel uptown, instead they are downtown ).
If you watch the show, Jarrod and his side kick Brandi find $712.00 in poker chips. Wow, what a find! Let's all get on a plane and go to Las Vegas and buy units. NOT! After living and working in Las Vegas I can tell you one thing, poker chip must be cashed in at the casino they are from. You can not take a Palms chip to the MGM and get cash. The chips are made for one reason to keep you at the property they are from. If you watch the episode at http://www.aetv.com/ you will see that Jarrod and Brandi cash in their found chips at the Golden Nugget. Now people listen, Las Vegas is all about odds. What do you think the odds are that someone could go out into the 40 mile wide city of Las Vegas, purchase one shed unit of about 30,000 units in the city and find a stack of poker chips, and that those chips just happen to match up to where you're staying. Let's all play Megabucks because we have a better chance to win that one then this chip fantasy.
I also ask you if you were going to lose your belongings for owning 300.00 in back rent (shed rents are cheap in Vegas) would you not go to your unit and cash in your chips and get your stuff. COME ON ALREADY! The definition of reality is: real. The new definition by reality TV must be real with a twist of B.S. Unfortunitly, the B.S. is growing.
Another thing I need you all to be aware of is you might hear the cast members saying, "Well this won't fit in the car so I need to take the valuables. Not how it happens folks. If you buy a 10 x 10 full of crap you own 100 square feet of crap. You own it all and you haul it ALL. Watch the shows for fun but beware it's not real life. And the casted Auctioneers will have to answer soon as to how they are placing these items in legally liened units. Thats right the units are part of a legal process and no one is to ever enter into someone elses stuff prior to it being truely sold. The owners of that stuff have up to the time they raise that door to pay the rent and pull it from sale.If you want to learn this business this is where you need to be on Wednesday nights: reading my blog and learning the true in and outs of the business. Is A&E Storage Wars auction a staged, Fake program?

Sorry gotta burst you're bubble but yeah, scripted. I know this auctioneer and people that attended the set of it. This whole thing is faked. They paid many long time "regulars" 12k each to participate in up to six episodes. They also staged units with goodies to make good TV. They are just trying to make these auctions look way better than they are to increase the foot traffic and jack up unit prices. Because by making people "think" a treasure is hidden these auctioneers make higher commisions with higher sales prices. Shame on you DD for participating in this fraud.
But if you like the show, just realize it's as fake as "Wrestlemania", "The Hills" and "Gene Simmons Family Jewels"...fake reality shows are very good money!

if you see these guys at an auction you better just go home or enjoy being a spectator. The units are also staged. The show was also caught filming a supposed “auction” at a facility on a day that in reality an auction was not held. One of the best known Riverside auction buyers caught them red handed. This show is about stuffing the Dan Dotson pockets two ways. First with TV revenue which Dotson enhances with fakery. Second by enhancing storage unit values with planted items. Dotson has attracted huge new crowds to his auction circuit and caused a bidding war over treasure that was never there previously. Then Dotson gets higher commissions. This is skullduggery in its lowest form. Dotson is filling people with false hope and preying upon their dreams in this horrible economy. People are throwing money away based on the false image Dotson has portrayed.

Unfortunately yes it's scripted. My girlfriend occasionally goes to Bulk sales/Storage auctions and happened to mention that she was observing the taping of "Storage Wars" and told me it's totally Fake. She said that she overheard the direction given to these bidders to argue and bicker about a storage unit and then afterwhich it was announced they needed to move on but would come back later fresh to re-shoot.

Yes. Would've been nice if they made it real, but they wanted to insure that it got an audience and decided to stage surprise items hidden & underhanded competition, exaggerate personalities too. So they gave each bidder certain personalities...one to be the cut-throat guy and the couple who are nit-picking at each other, etc. Too bad they wouldn't do it the right way and try to keep it interesting on it's own merits.

Didnt say he didnt take anything from the units. Now a days the units are pilfered. Was at an auction Saturday and the auctioner and other buyer were taking about how a couple of crooked auctioner were taking from units. THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME.
I was under the understanding that the contents of the locker had to be auctioned off and that the contents are not the owner of the storage units property. The contents belong to the original owner until the start of the auction, then they go to the highest bidder. I dont beleieve the storage facility owner can do as he pleases with the contents of the unit (give it away, or pilfer what he wants). Someone correct me if I am wrong...

« on: July 29, 2011, 10:11:46 AM »IN MY EXPERIENCE the locks are MOST OFTEN cut some weeks prior to the auction. This is the sequence AS I UNDERSTAND IT.This is 100% correct. This is bascically the process. Then when unit sells the oringal owner receives a check in the mail after rent is paid in full from auction process.
Scenario 1: (most common IMHO)
1) Lkr contents owner doesn't pay bill for several months (may vary by state).
2) Prop mgr cuts lock (or has auctioneer co. cut locks) and puts on their lock and seal. Contents owner lk dropped inside lkr.
3) Legal notice runs in paper.
4) Contents owner is notified by certified mail.
5) If contents owner comes and pays up, prop mgr lock taken off and contents owner lk put on by contents owner.
5a) This is when the contents owner has chance to take stuff out.
5b) If contents owner defaults again process repeats...now there are two contents owner locks on floor. A bad sign.
Scenario 2:
(first 4 steps of scenario #1...legal process)
5) (variation on scenario #1) If prop mgr is 99% sure the deadbeat will NEVER COME BACK, here is
opportunity for prop mgr to MIS-APPROPRIATE goods in the lkr. Sometimes this is evidenced by tumbled down
boxes and/or patterns in the dust from a removed objects (also handprints in dust and opened tool boxes).
6) Lkr sealed back up by prop mgr and sale goes on (minus some goodies).
There are other variations of this, but these are the two most likely IMHO.
It happens, and has to be watched for, but is not super common. You learn the bad places and avoid them or take the risk. A PACKED lkr is only susceptible to this in the first "x" feet. The boxes at bottom of back wall aren't going to be gone through by mgr.
Side note:
Just because an auctioneer cuts lks off is no guarantee that prop mgr theft doesn't happen. Prop mgr could still cut off the new locks and get in lkr, OR might have done so BEFORE auctioneer lks were put on. Theft is possible no matter what sequence happens.
THE ONLY TIME YOU SEE AN EMPTY LOCKER COME UP.....is when locks are cut at time of auction. AND, who's to say that lkr wasn't previously opened by mgr and competely emptied and resealed ?

What facility in what state does your friend manage?I didnt say he takes anything, I said use your best judgement on this. Its the Storage companys stuff to do with what they want! They can give it away if they want. They auction to recoup losses. If the owner wants the stuff for himself he can do with what he pleases. Just like a pawn shop you dont pay its there stuff to do as they please.

They love the tv shows. Before lrks would go cheap and rent due was not always paid. Well now rent is paid 100% from bidders and times have never been better for his and other Storage Facilitys. He tells me they go into see what is in them so they have a general idea whats in there. Then they post in newspaper,online,etc to let the general public know. As f0r what they find and take for themselves is not something I can tell you! Have to figure that one out for yourselfs. And yes because show is hot right now and people looking to make $$$$$$$ to slove all there problems (LOL) there are lots of scams Storage Facilitys are doing due to the new people not having a clue. All they are taught is what the tv show teachs them as per what my friend told me. What storage company owner filled six lockers from stuff he had in his garage and sold them as abanoned units . Well he was caught when a bidders who bought a locker full of books saw the inscibed messages to the owner. The owner gave him his money back. Ya gotto be careful. If its too good to be true it usually is! Well unless you the highest bidder.

People come to the auction to mimic what the saw on storage tv shows. Glad the show wasnt the wwe! But since people like to spend money and get so excited i start the bid off at 350 even thou its a 200 locker and people bid it up to 700 and that was for 4 boxes a ripped cloth couch and old kids cloths on the ground. I love it! NO one walks out with a deal as long as I'm out the. I start them off between 300 and 500. Sad but true. When I do that the units got for 700 to 1400 bucks. Why do people belive the show is 100 % real? Well we all thought wrestling was 100%. Awww the old Hulk hogan days .

Dotson (the auctioneer) is always on the scene no matter where they go, so YES arrangements have been made it would seem....unless Dotson already had the contract to do the Storage One auctions in Las Vegas.If the network was smart they would have wwe on right after storage wars. Then thwy can have two real unscripted shows back to back. 100% real tv.
As to the ? do they never go to any other auctions.....In one of the Las Vegas episodes, Dave Hester had gotten up before the rest of the pack and gone to other auctions (presumably from other auctioneers). Otherwise, they may have an agreement with the Storage Wars show to NOT go to other auctions as this might DILUTE their presence on SW. Or, they might go to others and we wouldn't know.
I am interested to see if the SW Dallas show is truly done by the same production company for the same network (A&E). It's unclear at this moment as two posters here ...BigBuyGal and Ronin seem to be at odds about what is going on there...show (whoever is doing it) is supposed to start in the Fall (a month or so away).
