The Treasure Chest / Re: The one I will always remember.

That's awesome.  I'd have a hard time giving it up.   I'm a "everything is for sale at the right price" type but I do like books.

But considering the post after.....guess you needed the money.

$1900 in parking tickets!?    Classic. :D

Here they dont tow.   You just can't renew your license.

The Treasure Chest / Re: Estate Sales
« on: February 02, 2013, 12:46:32 PM »
Finding treasure at estate sales is getting harder.   Like said, most are now run by estate companies.

What I've found is they must watch eBay & CL hard to price items.

I was doing great with old hand cranked meat grinders. $1-$2 at estates.  Sell on CL for $25-$30.
With in a month every grinder I saw at estates were suddenly priced at $8-$12.
Which is fine, still room for profit but then the Laws of Craigslist kick in.
You post the same type of item to much, everyone that has that item then posts and dives down price.
So now you can get grinder on CL/etsy for $5 but estates still mark at $10!

Same with old 1930-40s mixers.  Use to be $10-ish.  Refurbish and sell for $30-$50.
Now estate companies are asking $35-$40!

Still picking but haven't found a "score" in months.  Friend did.  Paid $20 or stereo.  Got $300 for speakers, $125 for tuner and $200 or amp.......threw away tape deck.  Literally couldn't give it away. lol

Upon closer inspection she realized all the bills had teh same serial number, counterfits though pretty realistic looking ones.

I found 15 $100 bills while cleaning up the nightclub.  Same thing, really exited, untill I noticed they didn't look "right".   Closer look the serials were the same.

Guess its better i found them on the floor and not my till.....

I turned them over to police but years later thought back.....they only asked a couple questions then left.  No report.  Didnt ask for ID or contact ino. No checking our tills.  Never a followed up.

I'm thinking the cop just pocketed the bills.

The Treasure Chest / Re: Making money on books

I got five text books last week at a moving sale.  $1/ea.

Got quote before I bought.  Sold online as I walked to car for $72.

Did find later that I would have often more from another site.   But they don't  have a mobile app.
Will price shop next time......

The Treasure Chest / Casino tokens
« on: February 02, 2013, 11:51:47 AM »
I have a bunch of $10 tokens fom Imperial Palace in Vegas.  0.6 Troy ounce of silver.   Collectors item.
I've held on to for 10 years.   They were oung on eBay a fewer ago for $30-$50ea.

Figured since Imperil Palace just closed......good time to sell, people buying memories.

Look at this!  Less than $20/ea!    Think people are just trying for the silver content.....

Some treasure I got. :(

The Treasure Chest / Re: Tool Units
« on: February 02, 2013, 11:36:38 AM »
There are a few things ill sit on. For the most part I'm a flip it fast type.
If I'm offered a relatively fair offer, it's gone.
If they are honest and tell me they know where to get more for it, they have a buyer, what ever.....no problem.  Ill leave room so you can make a buck.

Guess that's why I get upset when estate sales price things at, or just below, retail.
I know this is your thing but Come On!   Leave some room for me.......

I've yet to ship/mail anything this year so haven't even looked at pricing.  But, on another forum people were saying that other sites, like www.stamps.com, are all set up and offering discounts......

Stories about Storage Auctions / $$rate of unit vs contents
« on: January 30, 2013, 07:07:30 PM »
As many know, due to circumstances, I try mainly for small units.
Got my facilities that cater to downtown apartment dwellers.  People that live in small places.
And they PAY.  I mean, $75-$100/month for a 2x3 or 2x4x3.....

Pretty easy for people to get behind and not being able to catch up. And they don't pay tht much to store trash.

So....

I'm at a facility today way out in country.
Was early and talking to employee. Some Info I gleamed... All three units up were 4x5. They rent 4x5 units for $25/month.  The most over due was 6 months.

Right off the bat I'm thinking who the heck can't come up with $150 to save all thier stuff?  They've had months of notices?  (Assuming they aren't dead or in jail)

Sure enough, they open the first.....trash. Literally trash.   Second, garbage bags of moldy clothes.  Third, old a** tv's and bed frames and more trah bags of (I assume) clothes.

Anyone pay attention to cost of unit rental vs the quality of contents?

eBay / Would you leave negative feedback?
« on: January 30, 2013, 11:54:08 AM »
Fiend got a $5 item off of eBay. Free shipping.

Item arrived and it was short on postage and he had to pay mailman.
It was only $0.20 but for some reason it upset him greatly.

Seller has pretty decent record and no one has complained about postage being short.

I say, mistakes happen.  Guy miscalculated by 20 cents.

Would you even mention it at all in feedback?

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Tell us about your first time

I was 16 or 17.
Friends father was a contractor and used storage facility as warehouse.  He did auctions cause he pretty much knew what was in the lookers from being there so much.   He'd pay us to clean them out....eventually started bidding myself.

Lot easier back then.   Free use of moving van from business.  Free dumpsters from job sites.  Recyclers came to business.  Old barn on property to store.......

In hind sight we threw away a lot of sellable items.  We mainly looked for construction and automotive stuff since that's the people we knew.   And sure we got scammed.  We didnt know what stuff was worth. No Internet back then.    If we made $200 we thought we were rolling in the money!  lol

I've approached a few people at auctions looking to piece meal thier unit and they've always turned into Gathom from 'Lord of the Rings' protecting thier Precious.   lol

Yeah....totally depends.

A $200-$300 vacuum that needs a $3 belt.  Fix.
Same vacuum that handles broke.  Move cheap to vacuum shop.
Same vacuum that foot is broken. Toss.

Depends on repair cost, time/labor, sell price of before & after fix.......

I donated and cherry wood dresser once, that I've seen at shops for $1000, because the time, labor and cost of materials were to much to get it to that level.   Let someone else thats into that make a buck.

Do the same cars.   Some I just clean and polish.  Could make more if I repair body and/or paint but I'm not going to spend $1000 and 20hrs of labor to make an extra $500 in profit......

If that's the case, we need to work out a deal bringing furniture from the south up north.

If I had the capital I would.  I see items in Dallas selling for 30%-50% of what they sell for here.
Mostly the rustic "country" stuff.   But to compensate the truck/gas/2-3day drive I'd have to fill the truck.

Wasn't there a show on father/son team.   They spent winters in Florida buying and had a shop in New Hampshire (?) they sold from in summer.......Pasternaks  or something?

Much more stuff than I wanted to lift !

Ha!  Me too.

Friend was a scout for the Seattle Sonics.  When they remodeled he was able take anything.
Managed to get one free weight station and said f**k this!   As far as I know it was still sitting in my old neighbors barn when they sold the place.
