General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Can't get rid of the goods...help!
« on: June 05, 2012, 06:54:40 AM »
Drop your asking price. It is only worth what people are willing to pay. If it is a special item and you don't have the venue to sell it for it's highest potential then you just need to sell it to someone who can.

Haven't watched these two guys for months but tuned in tonight (May 23, 2012) when they were in Alaska.

Didn't take long for them to get a lkr with an 8-WHEEL ATV.  Oh yeah, I know a guy got one of those just last week in a $1 lkr.

Gimme a frigging break !

You mean they didn't find the original bolldozer that paved the Alaska Highway, a fully intacted 18th. Century whaling ship, ancient Native American scrim-shaw made from walrus tusks, and the original claims to the best producing gold mines? Must have been a bad day.

Everyone knows if you spend $8000 to travel to Alaska, drop another $2000 on units you JUST HAVE to double your money! I just hope all the newbies in my area start catching planes and flying to exotic places to do storage auctions.  :D

Other Forms of Selling / Auction House no longer taking junk!
« on: May 23, 2012, 08:49:52 AM »
I went to a local auction house that I have been doing business with for the last three years, before I started doing storage auctions. I typically take them antique furniture, lower end pieces, and little nick-nack pieces of furniture that are not worth the hassle to sell on Craigslist (i.e. small storage racks, baker's racks, odd chairs, computer desks, small tables, end tables, etc.)

Well I took a load to them so they could sell it while I was on vacation, and when they looked at what I had (the usual stuff I bring) they said they could'nt take it, it wasn't worth enough! The guy I was talking to said sales are continueing to decline and they are having financial difficulties. He walked me around the showroom and showed the prices the furniture sold for at the last auction. Some of it I was amazed at how cheap it sold for, others I thought to myself well yea, it's ugly as chit and nobody will buy it, so as a re-seller why buy it! It sounds like more and more of thier client base is re-sellers and not retail customers. They have been in business for 30+ years so I trust they know what they are doing.

Anyway, I had to sweeten the deal with some nicer furniture for them to take the whole lot. If this is going to be the case from here on out, I am definitely going to have to back off on bidding on lower end units that typically have these odd, lower quality furniture pieces. At gas over $3 a gallon I am not going to run back and forth to try to sell $5-$10 computer tables, and bookshelves to Craigslist buyers.

Update~talked with one of the guys who was interviewed and asked why he was bumped.  He said it was going to air tomorrow (now today) at 9 on our local Fox station (seems the two channels are affiliated).

So I tuned in last night to see if I had the times/date right.  They ran a big promo about tomorrow's upcoming feature of storage auction buying~the new form of gambling............ugh................

I will update ya within 24 hours of what all was said.  No good can come of this I fear.
 :-\

At least they said "the new form of gambling" instead of "The new way to get rich with little money or effort!"

eBay / Re: Finally figured out the key to ebay selling...
« on: May 23, 2012, 08:19:01 AM »
I looked amazon over and they appear to be a pain in the ass too. What's been your exp?

I like Amazon. Easy passive sales. The one thing I have learned is it really isn't worth selling something for less then $5. The Amazon commission eats up to much money considering to time and effort to list, pack, & ship.

Craigslist / Craigslist observations
« on: May 22, 2012, 08:05:11 AM »
I have noticed that calls and emails about items I have for sell have dropped tremendously since this time last year. At first I was concerned until I started thinking about the nature of the calls and emails. The emails 70% of the time were scams and they still are about 50% of the time now, but the major change is with the calls. Last year probably 70% or more of the calls were from "tire kickers" "bargain hunters" or "pickers". I would say only about 25% of the calls I get now are from those types. In fact so few people are calling with the tired "Whats the least you will take" or "Whats your bottom dollar" lines, that I have been able to chase those callers and emailers off and not try to deal with them like I was last year. Although the phone has been quiet, when it does ring it tends to be a serious customer.

Have you all noticed any changes on Craigslist?

Same for me. I'm just across the state line but it should give me the listings for North Georgia counties but all I got was 25 miles around Atlanta.

Picker's Paradise / Re: Estate Sales
« on: May 21, 2012, 07:14:54 AM »
I haven't done any estate sales lately, but digging through the stuff that is supposedly unwanted or has no value is my bread and butter. It also depends on the company that runs the estate sale. I know of two estate sale companies in my area that if you bring bags full of stuff to the table to buy, they ring up the larger more expensive items and "ghost" the little things, basically free-bee them as they ring up and bag. Other estate sales it takes three supervisors to get a dollar knocked off a 5 dollar item, so you just have to know your area.

I remember one time I was at an estate sale about a two years ago and lots of people were checking out the fancy kitchenware & fine china & tables and chairs, many lementing how expensive the prices were, well I looked in the kitchen cabinets and they were filled with food! Cans, & boxes mostly unopened. I asked an employee how much for the food, she looked at me funny and said I don't know, 25 cents each? Well I started loading up bags and bags of dry food, canned food, spices, etc. Everybody was looking at me like I was crazy and several people snickered as the walked by. Well I ran out of bags and went to the truck to gat some more and don't you know when I got back to the kitchen it was elbows and a$$es everywhere digging through the cabinets. Luckily, I had already grabbed the really good chit, so I picked up my bags and off to the check out table. I probably paid $25 for about $400 in food!

No it could'nt have happened to ANY of us and I will tell you why it would'nt have happened to me anyway. This is the classic case of a desparado/gambler!

Newbie Mistake #1  "That was our first storage unit auction," said Jackie Ballinger. They were bidding on units at their FIRST auction? Not very smart, kind of like diving in the deep end your first time swimming.
Newbie Mistake #2  The Ballingers, armed with recently inherited cash, won the contents of the unit with a bid of $1650. They dropped $1650 on the first unit ever won with zero reselling experience?, kind of like buying a complete set of scuba diving gear and a dive boat before getting your swimming lessions.
Newbie Mistake #3  They thought they had hit the jackpot. Besides the fridge, there was a washer and dryer, a motor bike, even a riding lawnmower.  Alll of these items are USED and in UNKNOWN operating condition. If they were NEW, off the showroom floor, then yes, you could say you hit the "jackpot"!
Newbie Mistake #4  There were no engines in the motor bike, or riding mower, but something else made them suspicious. So they saw enough of these items from the door to KNOW they hit the jackpot but couldn't see they didn't have engines in them?Rose-colored glasses anyone? or were they Gold-colored glasses?
Newbie Mistake #5  The unit had several boxes with enticing labels that read "Daddy antiques," "Mama rings," "My and Mama laptops," and "Daddy old money." Boxes are almost always mislabeled, poor & frugal people will use the same boxes for multiple moves & storage. Did I tell you all about the unit that had flat screen LCD boxes full of clothes?
Newbie Mistake #6  The laptop box had four seat cushions," said Jackie Ballinger I have NEVER found a working laptop in a unit, I am sure some of you have, but if there is anything people are going to keep with them and NOT put in storage, it's a laptop computer. Other things typicaly NOT stored are handheld video game systems with the games that go wth them, and handguns.
Newbie Mistake #7 The other boxes had things like bed comforters. The "old money" box had old books and two pennies taped to the inside walls of the box. A box marked "old money"? Really? Really?. We have all found a little money scattered here and there in units and sometimes a coin collection or two, but do you think a family member is going to store a box of "Daddy's old money"?
Newbie Mistake #8 Evans says unit 169 was the best looking one auctioned that day. She also tells us she had no idea it hadn't been advertised ahead of time, but she says she is confident the unit was not staged. An unadvertised unit is almost always a red flag not to bid or atleast not bid to high. At best it is a facility build-up unit, at worst it's a...well see the story before us.

We all make mistakes in this business/hobby but this was a train wreck waiting to happen. A perfect storm of a Newbie/TV show buyer with money burning a hole in his/her pockets, and a classic trash/build-up/set-up unit.

eBay / Re: FREE Auction-Style Listing - MAY 16th
« on: May 16, 2012, 07:46:23 AM »
I'm waiting to get back from vacation because of Ebays lovely new policies for recieving discounts and high ratings we have to offer 14 day return and I don't want to take the chance of something returned sitting at my door for a couple of weeks and get negative feedback from the buyer.  :P

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #5...May, 2012
« on: May 15, 2012, 11:39:39 AM »
I know it's only the middle of May but this will be my last report for this month because I am going on Holiday for a couple of weeks. It means I will miss our two biggest caravans for the month and they are the best auctions for determining trends in attendance and prices.

So far as I have seen this month, **cross fingers, twirl in circles, pray to the Lebrchuans** It appears the numbers of regulars, 6 monthers, AND newbies or dropping. Last two auctions had less then 15 folks in attendance. Of course the couple of newbies that did show up ran the prices beyond reasonable, but we might be turning a corner here.

Someone mentioned the new season of Storage Wars (or whatever show, don't watch) is starting in June, so we will just have to see what affect it has on crowds and prices.

The way things have been going this month, when I come back from my holiday in June, I may not recognize a soul at the auctions!

By-the-way; How can you tell the difference between a "gay" unit and a "metrosexual" unit from the door? and what in the world does an "Albino" unit look like??

We don't have a diverse enough community to really stereotype by race, nationality, or other characteristics; although I do notice I tend to win the obviously African-American units. Not so much cause I go after them, but rather the rest of the crowd won't bid to high on them so I and up winning those type disproportionally. I actually stereotype facilities instread. Facilities that are in/near nicer parts of town and have higher rental rates I tend to pay more attention to. The facilities that have cheaper rents and $1 move in specials I tend not to gamble as much.
