Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Got one today

Just sold the MLB Magnetic Game Lunch Box from 1968 for $20.

Unfortunately, I will not be making a profit off this unit, even though I am half way there now. Only reason being is because I am deciding to keep the air compressor. Was going to buy one here soon anyway. And if I bought it brand new, I would of paid more for it then I paid for my lkr.  I should break even though. Got to spend a lil more money fixing up a Solid Wood Vintage Desk and the Razor Chopper Bike.

Ebay auction just ended on that payphone. The phone brought me 195.50 + 25 shipping and handling. I say it did real well.

I would say around $125 or more.  Contact local retail businesses or Restraunts. Maybe even some flea market vendors. Try to concentrate on new businesses buildings that are being built. It saves them money and gets them sold.

On the border crossing or duty, you may want to contact the officials that protect the border. Other  than that I am not sure. But you could always not be so honest telling them you are helping people, family, yourself move. That would be up to you though, and I am not sure on the legalties.

I would like to agree with everything that Movieman just said. You will come across good lockers, just like you will come across crappy lockers. And IS ALWAYS A GAMBLE. I dont care if you can see everything from the threshold of the locker or not. Just because you see it, number one does not mean you will get what you think you will get for it. That it is in good shape or even working for that matter.

If you ever been in a professional sales position, whether its furniture, appliances, news papers, some door to door type or a tele-marketer. This is the same as those. Its a numbers game. The more you buy the more you increase your chances of getting a really good unit. Although you will need to take in account you will also end up with more crappy lockers.

Just like Movieman said though, your goal should be, just like all of ours is to double your money. But that is not always the case, sometimes you will lose all of it, get only 50% of what you put into it, or break even, double your money, and in some cases make a few grand when you only spent $500 on a locker. There is alot of variables in play.

Oh Movieman, you forgot one very important expense, GAS! :)

Welcome to the business and welcome to the forums. Hope to hear your finds soon. That is a very good idea about building a database. It is what I do, and I am constantly adding more to it.

Good Luck

I use a mini truck, which I end up using alot of gas going back and forth. Which is why I stay away from alot of furniture or huge huge lockers. I stay away from lkrs that are bigger than 10x10 unless they are only half full. Some people rent box trucks, but in my area its pretty rare. I have seen people load into cargo vans and full size pick up trucks, sometimes with a trailer.

As far as space is concerned, alot of the people out there have there own warehouses. Some like me rent a locker out to keep inventory in.

Good luck

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Selling clothes
« on: May 22, 2011, 01:36:31 PM »
I personally dont do it unless it is name brand and is clean. Or is brand new with tags still on (no matter the brand then). Other wise I would have a 10x10 storage locker full of just clothes. I know there is money in them, even at 25 cents to a dollar. But for the major part of it, people dont even look at the clothes in my yard sales.

Hi All!  I first stumbled on these storage auctions while browsing my  local paper classifieds about 1 1/2 years ago.  To this day, I can't get it out of my head that I could do this and replace my real job.  When I first saw the ad in the paper, I went to the public storage auctions for a few months in a row.  Observed, bid on some, but then backed down when the thoughts of what the hell am I going to do with those mattresses, and how am I going to get all this home and where am I going to put it all scared me.  About a year ago, I went to a less publicized auction and bought a small locker for $5.  I sold a couch, and some tires from that unit.  Spent a lot of time hauling and going through the stuff.  Planned on selling some more of the small stuff, but eventually got tired of walking around it and tossed it all.

I am a working mom of young kids that are pretty involved in activities and sports.  I am to the point of overload.  I am looking for more flexibility.  I am thinking about quiting my job and trying this FT.  Or going PT and doing this PT.  My question to the veterans is...  Can I honestly replace my current take home income of $3,400 a month.  I am not afraid to work, but don't want to do it for peanuts.

Your opinions are appreciated.

Honestly, yes you can. There are plenty of people that do. BUT DO NOT MAKE NO MISTAKE ABOUT IT, it is hard work. Lots of hard work, and you will need expendable money to do this. Especially if you want to replace your current income. Wanting to make sure you get that kind of money you will need your own store.

My advice to you is try the storage auction business PT, like on your days off (if you happened to be able to get days off during the week, there are very few auctions on Saturday, and have yet heard of one on Sundays).

This is not a business for the weak and timid, my meaning to this is. Do not think you are going to make money off of every single locker you buy, especially in this day of age and being new at it. I been doing the storage auction business for only a few months, although I been doing resells for a few years now, and I cant say I have a FT income. Although I work FT hours with loads of overtime.

I personally have been lucky, just about every locker I bought so far has had at least 2 or 3 collectibles. Only two of those have been big ticket items worth hundreds. Most stuff you will find is trash and general merchandise. The general merchandise you get most people have, so it will take time to sell, unless you have connections to get rid of stuff faster. Or you have your own store.

So yes you can replace your current income. But it will take alot of work, and most important, TIME.

Flea Markets / Re: When to "dump" your flea market inventory?
« on: May 21, 2011, 07:32:02 PM »
I dont do flea markets yet. But I would think I would do the same way. Like Rules I try to make a buck out of everything, but because of that I ended up getting inventory overload, so I end up doing alot of creative things. I try to sell alot of things in bulk. Good thing about my area, is that there is alot of people that resell. So I usually can, not all the time, unload alot of general merchandise that I am overloaded on to another vendor.

Clothes is another story, name brand that looks good, like new still, or even brand new, I will resell. Everything else I just end up donating, or I put it up for free on CL and try to organize it where they will come pick it up while I am having a garage sale. I sold a few things this way, not all the time, but a few times I have.

I had a bunch of those shopping bags you buy, usually made out of canvas or some sort of recycled plastic. I use those during garage sales for people who buy a few things and need a bag, so they get a free bag.

Stories about Storage Auctions / No need to buy..........
« on: May 21, 2011, 07:26:04 PM »
In the storage auction business I have had alot of ironic episodes. For instance, when I first started out, I bought 3 locks. All took the same key, however these are long handled locks, so they dont fit every unit. I knew I needed to buy more, however my first locker I bought, guess what, I got 5 brand new locks with keys, these fit the lockers which I needed for my 3rd locker.

Second time, I needed to wash my truck, damn near filthy as hell. Anyway after I bought it, two days later I bought my second locker, and lookey lookey, the exact same spray nozzle I just bought to wash my truck I find in the unit still packaged, so I got my money back on that item. Also with the second unit I needed straps, lots of furniture. And what do we have here, straps, alot of straps in my second locker.

3rd time, my microwave just went out, and the 5th locker I bought I got me a brand new microwave, still in the box.

4th time this happened, was the locker I just bought, my 10th locker. I hurt my wrist by doing something really stupid, sprang it real bad. But guess what, there was a wrist stabelizer splint in this locker.

Just goes to show you, for the most part you dont need to buy things while in this business. Chances are you will find it in a locker.
