What's it Worth?? / Re: What would YOU have paid for this 70s Pontiac ?
« on: January 10, 2012, 12:41:30 PM »
No way that would of gone for only $325 in my area, even w/o the engine.  I have a dirt track 3 miles from my house and two others in a 45 - 1hr drive.  So there are a ton of racing types that would of loved to turn that car into a hobby or stock V8 class race car.  I could of taken a picture, posted it on CL, and sold it in a few days I suspect at 2-4k as-is.

Seen 1 car go up for auction so far in a unit sale.  It was a old chevy w/ the engine on the floor.  Sold for $3600.  I bought the companion unit to the car for $150 ($160.50 w/ tax).  Didn't find the tools and car parts I was hoping for but made a quick sale on 1 of the car parts (Vega steering box) for $200.

If the lawn mower and stuff don't run it's not worth $10 in scrap.  Shred price currently for me is $0.125 cents a lb.  The TV is ok - is pretty much the scrap value for it (2.77 for #2 copper).

The swimming pool and pump if alum and not the Walmart plastic type could be worth the $50.  Would have to do some research on that.  All depends on the make/model and actual size.

Comic book collection the guy is nuts.  Not going to happen unless he has some rare slabbed comics in it.  Most people attach more value to collections that they have worked on then what they are worth.

Check out the "household / kitchen" items like forks.  Lady at my local flea can't keep forks in stock.  Common ones are $.25 each - the fancy ones that are part of sets go for $.50 - $1 each.

Depending on what is left over by time you get there don't be afraid to make him a "lot" offer to take everything for one price.

I would of liked pictures or bit more description.  Was there a number of boxes or totes in the units?  I ask as for many people lots of dust = older age.  Lots of age = better chance of not being searched, antique furniture, etc.

Now - from what you described I would give it a 85% chance the people who purchased the lockers are newbies.  The washer & dryer would be worth about 15-20 in scrap depending on the current shred price.  I would of been looking at the wine bottles.  Were they open, sealed, or broken.

Second locker sounds like a bad bet all around.  Those normally go for $1 in my area.  I have seen more $10 and under 10x20 lockers then I have seen $1k+ lockers.  I'll even spend a $1 on a trash locker if spot 1 thing I like for around $20 just to see what else may be there.  I say $20 item I like as that is what a trailer full of trash cost me to dump in my area.

Welcome Oyaoya - nice little haul you had there just getting back into this.  I'm sort of surprised you got the locker that cheap.  Most people have become aware of scrap value along with the storage auctions.

You use "smell" to help determine if you want to buy this locker or not.  If you see "pet dishes" and things like that and get a whiff of cat/dog urine you don't want that locker.  If your a non-smoker you may be able to make out smoker vs non-smoker units unless a fellow auction smoker is near you.

If you are in Athens DFFATL you should look into Atlanta.  That will keep you busy enough.

I've done the "retail store" thing only a few times.  Most of the time it's a popular game or electronic item that I buy local and sell for $30-$50 profit to others in the US that can't find the item.

Only other time I ventured out from that was at Khols.  Mother had a 30% off coupon and I got stuck driving her and my kids there to shop.  So while waiting for them to try on the 20th something item I walked around the store.  Found a table of clearance household items.  Found one of those nice "single cup" coffee machines.  Thought my wife would like it so picked it up.  Think with the 30% off I paid like $12 and change.  She didn't want it so I posted it on CL and sold it for $50.

I keep my eye out on govdeals.com and few other auctions sites mostly.  Other then storage auctions it has always been estate and equipment auctions for me mostly.

I don't post my phone # in CL list.  Get enough spam phone calls as it is, spam email is easier to block.

Anyways - for me I know I am bad about posting CL stuff late at night and then going to bed.  Don't see the replies till the next morning.  I then respond to emails in the order that I got them.  That said - I can almost tell you now which are fishing emails for active email accounts and which are legit buyers.  If they include a phone # - I respond with a call.  If they just ask if it is still up for grabs I answer even though 1/2 time these are fishing emails.  Now if they just click on the email link and copy the post I don't bother with a reply.

It really works both ways.  I've replied to several emails from so called buyers and never heard anything again.  Or I get the "I'm sorry can't get it right now as my car broke down.  But luckly I just landed this job doing XYZ.  If you are interested also in XYZ .........."

I have found a few emails in my spam box before.  If they just copy the header from CL many times now it goes to spam.  If they change the title it is more "eye catching".  When I respond to an ad I try and do the following:

Subject: Metal Bed Frame - CL post from 1/9/12

Body: I saw your post on Craigslist from 1/9/12.  I am interested in the metal bed frame that you have for sale.  If it is still available please give me a call or text at XXX-XXX-XXXX.

Then "sign" it and see if I get any response.

I have the same type issue with google phone #s.  I've called and called some #s for items I see in the local trade mag or CL and never get a response no matter how many VMs I leave.

Ok - I'm starting to get a little frustrated and worried here.  First U-haul cancels the auction on the 3rd.  Now my auction for today at 1 has been canceled and rescheduled for Friday.  It may get canceled Friday.  What gives -- next my caravan thursday is going to cancel.

Cobia - not great prices there but least not $300+ units for the same trash as earlier reports.  I wouldn't of gotten unit #2.  Would of bowed out at $175 - $200 since have yet to get a working fridge.

Heck - people do it all the time.  Is about as dumb as paying rent on a locker full of garbage or one that is empty.  Least on the empty ones I figure they just pulled the stuff out and left the few trash items behind and didn't notify the company they were leaving.  But some of the other stuff I've seen just makes ya go "OK".

I think I'd sale cloths better at a yard sale then flea market.  I'm mostly keeping any high-end stuff and jeans right now and just donating the rest.  Don't want to have cloths in boxes in the sheds during winter.  That just invites the mice and squirrels to make nest.  So what doesn't fit in the totes is going to Goodwill.  I plan to do a large yard sale come late March / April when it warms up.  Noticed saturday that I didn't see the first yard sale in my local area.  So think the current market is just on break or something.

I'm keeping an ear out for when people start getting their refund checks.  Mother works doing taxes for one of the large companies in our area.  So when she says people are starting to come pick up checks I plan to sell at the flea that weekend if decent weather.  By then decent weather will be 50+ degrees and no wind.  I'm super glad we have a short winter in the south.

Don't know the moving & storage type places.  Don't put them high on the list but you can find good stuff there sometimes.  We have a few ritzy type neighborhoods in the area.  I always try and watch for moving truck / companies that they use.  Their discards can sometimes be high-end furniture for the low and mid class people in the area.

Shmoopy - many months the 7 facility caravan is more driving then worth.  With only 1 or 2 units at each location.  The very last facility on the caravan is one that only 30% of the time has anything up for sale.  But it's also in a upper class area so the units are normally higher end stuff also.

Flea Markets / Re: First weekend of the year

Dang rockin - wish I had that in my area.  Have 2 this week and 2 next week but not "that" busy.  Hopefully you will pick the right ones to hit on your 3 caravan day and have a small crowd.

I hit the flea today with father so he could buy some tarps.  Talked to some of my competetion to see how they been doing and one of the vendors on the row I normally sell at.  Per the vendor Saturday was slow till after 2pm which is unusual.  She said only made $1 till 2 and then things picked up steady.  Sold all of her "milk cups" and other items.  She had bare spots on her shelfs so she well the last 2 hours of the day.

I made $200 on a CL post.  May could of made more but was happy with the sell.  Gives me more cash for this week.

Lol Todd - I would of gone "have it, have it, seen it, seen it , seen it, Oh here is a new one!!!!".  Would of gotten the same treatment.  Just told my wife I found a book for her "Every woman's stripper excercise and workout book".  She told me to keep dreaming.  I replied - well you took those pole dancing lessons with your siser  ;D

Shmoopy - here is what I normally find and do:

1) Matresses - avoid can't sell in my area
2) Washer/Dryer - 50/50 chance they work.  If I ever find a source to work on them will start to bid on.
3) Particle board furniture - most of it I have gotten is cheap, broken, water damage, etc.  Goes in bon fire pile.
4) Trash bags / boxes (cloths) - I'm still trying to get a handle on this.  Donate most things to Goodwill for write-off.  Keep a few.  Still trying to figure out best way to sale.  Going to try ebay here soon.
5) safe, lockbox, briefcase - 95% of the time they are empty or paperwork.  Still looking for one with something good in it.
6) Totes / boxes - wide range of stuff -- is what I love searching

Things that sell for me:
1) electronics
2) bed frames w/ rails or the rails by themselves
3) CD / DVD / games @ flea (figure $2-$3 per)
4) nick nacks and random stuff
5) New items in box
6) Shoes that came in boxes even if used

I've not really found any porn or drug stuff except for my first unit.  It smelled of weed, found a vial of lidacain (expired), and a "Girls gone wild DVD".  Only other porn I found was a guy that taped playboy tv.  Guess I'm buying the wrong units :)
