Obviously we all have things we look for in units and we look for clues. Part of this is basically stereotyping units. Just thought it would be fun to say what the best units we have found or tend to find are.

Two of my top two categories of peoples units to buy have to be Phillipinos and Gays. Phillipinos units in my experience always have designer clothes TONS of expensive handbags, lots of good toys, etc.

Gay dudes tend to have nice clothes, nice home furnishings, electronics, chrome barwear type stuff just overal nice stuff.

Any other stereotypes that help you pick units?

LOL researching. some one has been watching to much storage hunters.

agreed lol. "i heard the owner of this unit was a gold dealer" or some crap like that. 99% of people who are losing their units are not someone who's going to be in the paper for their antique collecting more likely for their domestic violence case or bankrupcy, kidding of course not everyone who loses a unit is a deadbeat but overall its not going to be worth your time researching people to find out who they are, how much they make, and make an educated guess about whether they have good stuff or not.

I suppose if your looking in the paper and they have the names listed it only takes 2 seconds to google someone's name but my guess 99.9% of the time your not going to find anything at all let alone anything that will tell you its a good unit. drug dealers would be the ones I would buy if i did do research. jim smiths unit is up for auction and  he just got sentenced to prison for 50 kilos, im buying that unit could be stuffed with cash lol. aside from that thogh not worth your time.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: pods
« on: March 04, 2012, 05:02:07 PM »
Sam if your looking for a new source of merch check out police auctions, freight auctions, and other things like that. Pods is no different from storage auctions and it's typically the same type of merchandise as your average storage auction.

The crowds are worse as well. I can't speak for all areas but in my area there's one mian pods facility outside of Chicago where they auction the stuff at and they seem to not do them all that frequently so when they do have them it tends to be people from all over chicagoland comming out for this one auction that doesn't happen often as opposed to your average storage facility who has auctions weekly if not monthly and it's not as big of a deal to make it out to one.

agreed. ive only been to one or two pods auctions but some of the highest prices and largest crowds I've ever seen.  i attended mine during the height of the whole storage auction craze but it was still way worse than other auctions ive been to.

Are the coins all US or are there mixed foreign coins?

Most US coins prior to 1964 are silver, I think up to '66 or '67 is like 40% silver. For nickels look for war nickels I think it was 41-43 i may be off by a year or two. i believe there were a few years of steel nickels and steel pennies during the war.

coins are wierd some older stuff you'd expect to be worth a bunch is worth like a nickel and other stuff you wouldn't expect is worth hundreds.

as for the 1909 if its a VDB i believe its called its probably worth at least a grand i think that's the initials of the guy who designed the penny or something like that.

alot of older foreign coins are silver content i think canadian and swiss up to 68 maybe even 70.

youd be surprised how much info you can find just googling a few words on the coin but another good resource is a website called realcent.org

tax return money back? i wish lol. I owe $2500 bucks. Im kinda pissed I just had a nice check comming from my business and its all going to the IRS  :(

lesson to everyone that i learned im no tax expert but was running my business last year with my partner under his social so our income together got combined with him and his wife and bumped us up into a higher tax bracket. we finally smartened up and started an llc and i think we'll be in a better position next year tax wise.

alias, good luck to you with your surgery i hate to see people having medical issues along with the expenses that come along with them best of luck to you.

personally i would never bid somebody up just to make a unit less profitable for them or to discourage them from comming back. i wouldn't want someone to do that to me so why would i do that to them?

also, we are all here trying to make a buck, if were all senselessly bidding on crap we don't want just to make others pay more were all missing out on money and putting more money into the pockets of the storage facility and/or the defaulted unit owners.

for an analogy though kind of wierd i would almost liken it to the mafia during prohibition or even gangs and drug sales today. the smart ones realize that though they may not like each other and may not want to be friends certain behavior causes them both to not make money. wierd analogy i know but sorta along the same lines.
get along be peaceful with each other and everyone makes more money.

the only time i ever run someone up is if someone has taken 8 out of the first 9 unites or the day or something like that. or occasionally if a newbie shows up whos too big for their britches waiving money and talking about taking every unit of the day and stuff like that.

other than that i think were all better off if were somewhat cordial and courteous to each other b/c if i run you up then you run me up and the only winner is the storage facility

I've always had a tough time moving silverware as well as China. Silverware is obviously easier as if nothing else at least you have the silver content which is pretty worthwhile.

I've had some nice China, some relatively rare china. Have tried ebay no luck, have tried selling to sites like replacements but are picky about what they take and don't pay much even though they sell single plates for like $30 or more.

I've taken them to pawn shops not interseted resale shops not intersted. Tough part about shipping china is it breaks so easily and properly packing will make shipping box huge and full of packiing materials and expensive to ship. I wound up selling most of my china at garage sales for garage sale prices.

As for silverware unless you have a full set or unless it's a rare set most people probably won't buy it to use as actual silverware most people will be interested in buying it for scrap. I've had pretty good luck on ebay with scrap however most buyers of scrap are probably pretty saavy and realize shipping costs eat into their profit when they take it to their scrap dealer plus ebay is hitting you with 13% fees so already they are paying 13% more than they would in a local sale.

I would say maybe relist on ebay maybe you'll get someone who wants to buy silver but isn't smart enough to really do the calculations of what its worth in scrap and would pay a higher price. I generally look at silverware as junk silver unless it's a full set or very rare silverware

I would say there absolutely is such a thing as bidding someone up. If your about to take an unit at $500 and I throw out a few bids and you wind up paying $700 I've run you up $200. That's not to say your going to lose money as you are right you should never bid more than you think you can make off a unit but if you paid $200 more for the unit thats $200 less you have in your pocket after selling the unit.

Sam

PS - I love when someone gets the idea of 'bidding me up.' I don't have any problem with staying at an auction all day bidding 100 times and walking away with nothing while those 'bidding me up' walk out with a substantial bill.

I think you missed the point iwht your above comment. If they are bidding you up they are going to dump the unit on you leaving you with the bill.

eBay / Re: Account Sell Limits
« on: February 29, 2012, 04:48:38 PM »
Not allowed
Registering new accounts or using other existing accounts to avoid buying and selling restrictions or limits or other policy consequences

Just make sure you categorize your accounts so use one account for clothes, purses, etc and use the other for electronics and jewelry. Your doing it for categorization purposes they can't say you are doing it to raise your limits.

Just to give you an idea a guitar I recently sold for $150 on craigslist I was offered $30 for at a pawn shop.

Also, pawn shops tend to be very picky about what they take such as only electronics, gold, instraments, etc they aren't going to take the household crap which is what you will have the most of. You want to make the most of those big ticket items and not give them away for nothing. Also, those will be the items that you have the easiest time selling on your own as well.

It's easy to get rid of a 50" flat screen tv, its not easy to get rid of dishes, china, etc.

I bid on what I want REGARDLESS of who wants it.....If they get what I want then they pay for it....

Every man for themselves cause Im not there to make friends. I only see them at auctions its not like we hang out and sing Koom Ba Ya at night. Its a business and nothing should be personal cause if you take it that way then your in the wrong line of work.

Just my Opinion.

I'm kind of split. Part of me says every man for himeself may the best man win. That said I personally think it's not necessarily good business to buy everything even if you are the whale as it's a way to turn everyone against you and cause yourself to pay higher prices at every auction moving forward b/c everyone hates you.

Of course business is not about being friends but that's not to say there's not some etiquete and common courtesy and unwritten rules.

If everything were cutthroat in other types of business companies would do anything to win people may badmouth competitors, file complaints with regulators or government just to make your competitors deal with headaches and take away from their business, etc, etc, etc. This type of behavior would spread and everyone would do less business so by people following some of these unspoken rules things move more smoothly for everyone

Generally even in business where people aren't out to make friends there are often courtesies you extend to your competitors or unwritten rules people follow. Not saying your wrong just kind of playing devils advotage and stir up discussion.

eBay / Re: Account Sell Limits
« on: February 26, 2012, 08:42:37 PM »
I was told that's a direct violation of the eBay TOS, and that once they catch up with you they will close all of your accounts and lock you out from opening up another account.

not saying you aren't correct but can you post the part of the TOS that says this? it was actually an ebay rep on the phone who told me to do this. i complained that by opening a store i lost my free listings and she said just open a second account with a store and keep my personal account.

i would think a business account belongs to the business and the personal account belongs to your person.

i dont claim im right on this issue lots of sites have crazy terms of service and ebay has some stupid rules like no way for sellers to protect themselves or show proof on pickup/delivery items but i was told to do this by an ebay rep and also have seen time after time people suggest doign this on the actual ebay forums through the ebay website.

PayPal is the way to go only if he ships with tracking. Without tracking the buyers can initiate a charge back and will get a full refund unless proof of delivery is shown.

The problem that I see with shipping is that Craigslist is regional. That means anyone viewing his ads is within driving distance and might not be inclined to pay for shipping, nor will they pay for an item they can't see with their own eyes.

This was my point exactly CL is regional meaning people will want to meet up in person. Like someone said in another post they had someone drive 2 hours to buy a $25 dresser, some people just like meeting in person seeing what they are buying and handing over cash money.

I agree Paypal protects the buyer sometimes to a fault none the less I don't think people trust shipping especially with craigslist and craigslist also puts disclaimers up all over the place about dont go for shipping.
