Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #4...April, 2013
« on: April 24, 2013, 10:21:59 PM »
2 auctions today in Raleigh. Both properties had 2 units each. First auction had an entire office it seems. Lots of paperwork.. so much that the property manager said that we could use their dumpster to throw it out. Nobody bid. Next locker was a band space. 10x20 largely empty except for a couple of things left behind. I bought it for $50. Found 2 PA speakers, 2 guitar amp speakers, both pair in good shape. 3 space heaters, 1 AC unit, a ladder, and a bin full of band merch. I open the bin and sitting on top is a lock box. Pop the box open and I found $6 and $6ish in change. Also had a $20 money order with someone else's name on it. I'll make money but not a ton. Lots of stuff to throw out.

Next property had a $10 unit and I bought a unit for $70. Coffee table, 2 big ass speakers in cabinets, 2 decent lamps, an 800 watt car amp and a fishing pole is what was kept. I'm looking at a tiny profit, but a quick clean out. These may be the only 2 auctions this week. At least I got something new to put out this weekend...

One liners does not a novel make!

Correct. But 898 one liners put together makes a great novella.

:D :D "Redneck Willy Wonka!" LOL!  :D :D Trying to imagine what that even looks like! Are we talking Gene Wilder Willy Wonka or Johnny Depp Willy Wonka?

Picture Gene Wilder with Willy Wonka hair under a trucker cap with a flannel type shirt.

I'm still doing better at yard sales then anything else.  So I always try and keep $100 or so in reserve for saturday morning yard sales.

The yard sales around here are just as good as buying retail. People ask too much for their used stuff!

I wonder if me and you have had any run ins. I am from the Fayetteville area but travel to Aberdeen/Rockingham/Whiteville areas. I have been close to Raleigh as well with places like Smithfield/Wendell/Clayton.

I pretty much stay within Raleigh/Durham/Cary. Sometimes I'll venture out toward Chapel Hill and if there's a bunch of lockers down to Fuquay/Angier. If I go to Clayton/Garner it'll be a legal ad posting only. Nowhere to be found online.

I couple of questions HomeGrown,

Is he a seasoned vet and are you a relative newbie? or are you more a regular and he a newbie? It seems like with a childish response like 825! Now go away already! he is not a professional.

My hunches are, he is a seasoned regular (although not a professsional) and you are bidding on units in his "sweet spot" thereby creating competition for him. In smaller markets, just showing up to certain auctions is infringing on someones sweet spot. You also stand out in the crowd, so you might be drawing more attention then normal 6'4" tall, 350 lbs.? .....etc....etc........etc...

I've been attending storage auctions since I've been out of high school. My grandfather owned a used goods store in NJ and I would help him out with loading/unloading and he would show me what to look for, values of things, etc. When I moved to NC, I was on the circuit locally. I cut my teeth with the "old pro's" and once they saw that I knew what I was looking at, and I was patient, staying in my budget not letting my feelings get the best of me, etc. I earned respect. Back then I didn't see this guy around... Anyway, when the TV shows broke and the HUGE crowds came and everything ran real expensive I dropped out and went back to a day job. Now that I own a business separate from auctions, I can do both. So I'm back out there..

My guess is, this guy thinks I'm new and is trying to run me off.. When I first came back, I asked one of my old buddies who he was and he told me a little of his back story. When I described this person, Tom, to my friend; I described him as a "redneck Willy Wonka".. all in fun, I am a comedian after all :) I'm thinking that got back to Tom and now he's got it out for me.

General Storage Auction Talk / I think someone has it out for me...
« on: April 23, 2013, 10:08:45 AM »
At the last few auctions, I have encountered the same fellow during bidding and it seems like he has something against me. I feel like he bids on the unit just because I am. Last auction we were both bidding on a 10x15 whole house unit. They even packed up their cleaning supplies. I put a limit of $600 on it, because even though it was a lot of boxes, it was also a lot of stuff that I just couldn't sell, like those cleaning supplies.. It was me and this guy (Tom) bidding on the unit the whole way. With each bid he got more and more aggressive. So I push my own budget to $800, everything I had on me. Finally after my $800 bid, Tom says "$825! Now go away already!"

The auction before he was just as aggressive only on the units I was bidding on.. I wonder why he's got it out for me..

I bought 4 lockers on April 1st. I had no room for any more stuff. I continued going to auctions, but it was always in the back of my head that I can't get anything too big because of my lack of storage. Now that I have plenty of storage space and a fatter wallet, I can go for the bigger units. I like going for the bigger units and selling off. Although, the "what you see is what you get" units are usually good for a quick flip.

I'm pretty sure hijinx like these were around no matter when you grew up. They're just easier to proliferate now with the internet.

Craigslist / Re: Craigslist Flakes...Let the 2013 Flake Count Begin

I hate dealing with people like that. They think they're buying brand new stuff off of Craigslist. Sometimes, I feel like saying "If you want a warranty, go buy from Haverty's, you cheap F***!" What I've learned, however, is if you stand your ground on price with these people, they respect the product more. It's as if you're saying, "This stuff is worth what I'm asking." and they tend to take a second look and think harder about the offer. In the end, you can throw out a $100 discount "if it helps them out." In my experience, that tactic works for people with money to spend. (and not instant money like tax returns) My experience includes selling cars (Chevy's to Mercedes), home electronics, and appliances.

A lot of times at goodwill the employees don't thoroughly test electronics. If the power light comes on, it's good enough for the sales floor. it's strange that the screen was on in the pic, but when you got it, it didn't work. Perhaps something damaged during shipping?

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Good Part Time Income??
« on: April 18, 2013, 10:48:25 PM »
At the flea market, the smalls are selling like crazy. I have a sectional couch for $200 and a double lounge/chaise for $100. I can't move these pieces! I think I've got it priced really well, almost at a steal.. just can't move the big pieces.

The auction prices are still ridiculous. Today I saw 17 units. Didn't come away with anything either because they were too junky or too expensive. I can either buy a poop locker for $1-$25 or a decent locker for $400+.. There's no happy medium recently.

The camera guys do it to her every time.

My wife thinks she wears those low cut shirts on purpose when she knows she'll be on TV.. I don't know.. I think she is the type to wear those low cut shirts all the time..

Is it me, or did Nabila have too many cleavage shots? She needs to button up!

I bought 4 units on the 1st and nothing since. This week was hot and heavy with the auctions. I went to 11 properties this week. Saw about 50 units.. there were 5 good units to bid on and they all went for ridiculous dollars. I've seen more no-sales this week than any other time. 4 no sales.. Tomorrow I've got 1 auction to go to.. Hope I can pick 1 up so I can have new stuff to sell this weekend..
