Man - I thought I went to the wrong website at first or something.  Or was checking to see if I had been re-directed.

Will have to get use to it but looks great Drew.  Thanks for all you do for us.

Flea Markets / Re: Startup Costs
« on: January 02, 2012, 08:40:05 AM »
Startup cost at your local flea should be the cost of your rental spot, gas money to get there, and what ever you are doing for lunch.  You need to have some 1s and 5s for change but that is money you are keeping anyways.

I price large items or items I know that draw lots of attention and "how much" questions.  Most everything else either goes in a box/tote that has a price label or I don't list.

Money and Matches covered everything else.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: small locker but scored a little

For $60 you really can't go wrong most times if you see anything worth a few bucks to start with.

I'm surprised you was even allowed to bid and they didn't cancel the auction.  Like Movieman said most places want 3 people at least.  I suspect they were "bidding" against you to try and get the price of the rent covered as much as possible.  It is all really going to depend on the facility.  I know one here that really doesn't care what a unit sells for as long as it gets cleaned out quickly so they can re-rent.  So if that had been me at that facility I could of walked away with  a $1 unit.  No chance in my part of that happening.

Count your blessings and play the lottery tonight.  You may be on a roll.

Most I have paid was $875 at a silent auction for a very large unit (drive through commercial type).  So it was something like 20 x 40 or such.  No idea really.  Lost my butt on the unit.  Looked great from the door and turned out to be junk.

Least I've paid is $1 at a "loud" auction for a 10x10.  Got a few "free" units of various size.
Least silent auction was $26 and made some money on it.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Year End Report - 2011
« on: December 31, 2011, 07:02:09 PM »
Well as the end of 2011 gets closer and closer I decided to finish up my last calculations.  Only purchased 1 unit this month for $150 ($160.50 w/ tax).  Sold a vehicle AC freon draw-down system or what ever it's called to him for $200.  Still have a car part that guy bidding against me wanted and few other items from the locker.  So will make some money.  However, one big mistake wipes out everything for the year.

16 Units Purchased for the yar.
$1964.50 spent
$1239.73 items sold / cash / same-as-cash items (gift cards, stamps, etc.)

So ($724.77) in the red.

Kept just under $400 worth of stuff for myself, kids, family.  Have a bunch of inventory still for spring flea market.  Not counted all the items I took to Goodwill for the tax write-off.  So not a great first year for this auction buyer.  Looking forward to 2012.

Have a Happy New Years Ya'll!!!!!!

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: How low will auctioneers go?
« on: December 30, 2011, 08:28:24 PM »
It all depends on who the auctioneer is.  Is it the facility / regional manager that just wants the units cleaned out.  So will take even $1 to make the sale legal.  Or is it a real auction company that get paid for what they bring in.  In this case they may "buy" the unit to try and make some money.

Most disclaimers also read that the facility can reject any/all bids.  I've yet to see it happen in my area however.

Most units under $10 are that low for a reason.  Either it looks like all junk/trash and people don't want to make a dump run.  Way to much work for a unit that looks like no profit.  Or a combination of reasons.

My best unit wasn't a $1 unit but a $26 silent bid unit that looked like mostly trash.   ;D

Matches - on the van vs truck debate it starts to get into more of what do you buy more at auctions.  If you buy a large amount of furniture, appliances, or things of that nature a truck/trailer is your best bet.  If however, it's mostly smalls, totes, boxes, things under 3 feet a van is great.  As NightOwl stated - you can load it up, lock it, and not worry about the elements.

For real serious people a box truck with a lift gate is the best.  Then you have easy load / unload, plenty of height space, tons of room, etc.

Myself I'm a hybrid in a way.  I had already purchased an Avalanch back in 2007 and a utility trailer in 2008 to haul stuff.  So when I got into storage auctions I already had a covered truck to hold totes, boxes, other smalls that could be locked.  If get furniture I can either remove one of the sections of cover or bring the trailer.

You can buy a van and pull a trailer as yet another option for those times you do get furniture.

We have one oriental lady that always brings her dog to the auction.  They also normally drive from unit to unit like they are to old to walk.

Seen dogs at a few others at random times.  It's normally the purse size dogs and not a bother.  Since I have dogs even if they barked it wouldn't really phase me.

As for smokers - you get all kinds at the auctions.  Most of the smokers wait till they get in car or move away from the crowds.  Others light up anywhere and everywhere.

We have a few locations that they tell you up front no smoking allowed.

Storage Auctions "In The News" / Re: Why don't I ever find these units...
« on: December 30, 2011, 11:46:04 AM »
I really don't want to find such a unit.  Don't want a target on my back from either the drug lords or the police.  If did find such a unit I would just back out of it, cuss for 5 mins, call the cops, and then cuss some more while wait for them to show up.

Other then the drugs you could have a chance of getting the other stuff back.  If they can't prove the car, atv, what ever was purchased with drug money or used in the comission of a crime you can petetion the courts for posession or such.  You have to get a lawyer involved and spend all sorts of time and money.  So not really worth it.

I would be like Matches and be very tempted to skim a few bills or a stack before turn-in.  Still wouldn't do it.  Just too honest for my own good sometimes.

$160 for two totes - oh man I'd of been laughing hard.  Think people may of gotten money for christmas and expect to buy 1 locker and make $500k from it.  Who knows what people are thinking...or not thinking anymore.  I don't know if late Feb / March will be good or not.  People will be getting tax refunds by then.  So they will have cash to blow.

First auction of the new year for me is U-haul on the 6th.  Followed by my caravan auction on the 12th.  Caravan has 1 unit that was owned by a Icecream or such parolor place so figure a ton of people will be at this auction.

Just looked and Metro is on the schedule again.  They canceled back in Nov.  29 units at 1 location with (Baxleys Used Furniture w/ 4 units, and Neighborhood Improvement as owner names).  29 units at the other location.  Only thing I don't like about Metro is tax and a 10% prem.  But that is a holiday for my work due to MLK and thus I plan to attend it even if don't buy anything.

January looks to be a busy auction month.  So buying will be easy (if prices are good).  But no easy way to sale for next few months.  Flea market is open but very few people come to buy I'm told so not going to waste time, money, or freeze for little return.

Reality Shows about Storage Auctions / Re: Storage Wars Texas...Fall, 2011

The cowboy hat, snake boots, hat band, and belt buckle was a stretch...but I could see it as a remote possability.  I think it was more of a poor joke or play on the show being in Texas.  Texas isn't the only state with 1/4 of the population wearing a cowboy hat.  Any of the states in that area has people that wear them.  Not for a fasion or style sense but for practical purposes.  Those places you wear either a cowboy hat, boonie floppy hat, or sombero (sp).  Baseball cap is good for your face but your neck gets burnt.

I know people have already mentioned New York and Miami as other locations they may or are doing shows at.  I just really hope they just stop.  Is what kills many a show I think....the over saturation.

I must of missed a posting that was deleted by the mods.

I've been to Texas several times for training and once just to travel.  I love the state.  Some very cool waterparks and such are in Texas.  Slitherbauhm (however spell it) outside San Antonio has a cool water coaster.  No other type ride in the US.

Anyways - this is about storage wars, not really about the people that make up a state.  Lets talk about the units, story plot, or prices.  Who cares about the people.  I rub shoulders with worse looking and sometimes acting people then what is on TV at my local auctions.

Well MovieMan you just about have me sold.  Waiting to see how my wife jumps as far as her job goes before I get one.  Have $300 in walmart gift cards saved from Xmas so that will put a dent in the price.  Father just bought a 32 GB wi-fi one so will play with it some at the house.

If the dang thing would accept my CF cards instead of just SD cards I'd of bought one last night just for my photo shooting.  Or if it would accept a card reader but alas no.  So have not talked myself into it just yet.

Did get a Kindle Fire for xmas also so for those places that have wi-fi I'm going to toy around with it.

I keep forgetting all about the show being on.  Not posted on the website yet so I'll have to wait for re-runs....if I even bother watching it.  I now get a kick more out of listening to people in the gas station, store, or what not talking about the show then I do watching the show.

I had to re-educate a guy the other day.  He was talking about the 1 show I did watch where they pulled a 7k inkwell out of a locker.  I was like now think.  Everything in that unit was rental furniture.  No papers, boxes, personal items, cloths, or what not.  They don't even have enough money (assumption) to buy furniture so they rent it.   Yet, the people that bought the unit pull out a 1800s something blimp ink well worth 7k.

I could fall for a 7k lottery ticket tucked in between the seat cusions of the chair or couch before a 7k inkwell in that unit.

Dang that is alot of growth for Atlanta in a down economy.  Friend that hit an Atlanta storage auction after thanksgiving said the unit prices were about the same / lower then our area.  Thought maybe just due to holidays.  One of our flea market regulars I know goes to Atlanta to do all his buying for the flea.

One auction today in south carolina.  Only 3 units in the paper so will call to see if all paid up.  May or may not go just to check out the crowd and catch up with some of the new regulars.
