Got 200lbs of scrap aluminum and a bunch of Mikita tools for $20.

Second one picked up 15 dead car batteries, free.   Bang and Olufsen speakers for $10.

Third, got personal use stuff.  2gals Windex, 5 liquid Tide, 6 comet, 12 scrubbing bubbles and a big box of canned food.   All free!!

Makita's didn't have batteries but tested once home and thy all work and I have several extra batteries from another sale

3 Drills
1 Circular saw
2 Mini-circular saws
1 Sander/grinder
2 Chargers.

Think I should stand to make about $300 after expenses (200-some of it fast from recyclables) plus the $100-ish in grocery goods, makes for a good picking day.....

<update>
$310 in profit in 24hrs.   Keeping a couple tools too.

The Garage Sale King - How to single handedly destroy your neighborhood's property value.

Nice!

But for garge sales I think it would be....

Garage  Sale King- How to park like a douche bag.

Seriously, what's with garage sell people that there can be a million great spots to park and they will block he neighbors driveway or halfway in the street, block other cars in......

Had a lady two weeks ago at an estate sale come down the single lane road, just stop and got out.

Looked at the truck I posted about earlier in another thread....

I ask the guy to see he title so I can call in the VIN.
He doesn't have it.  He said his brother-in-law said he'd get it if it sold.

Who owns the truck?  Brother-in-law
Where is he? Mexico.

So if I buy this truck, you want me to wait the time it takes for him to mail in forms, from Mexico, then wait for it to be processed, 4-6 weeks, mailed back to him, mailed to you?  On top of which, he won't be here to sign title or bill of sale?

Noooo.   You buy and we'll send you everything!

Yeah.  First, I'm not handing you $1500 cash and not getting signed title and bill of sale.  Second, don't waste my time.   Don't post a car for sale if you don't have the title in hand!

Interesting people you meet on CL.......

i voted but i think i like the first half of the second with the second half of the first ,

That's my vote too.  With no "The" in front.   The "the", to me, sounds like a cheap self help book.   While with out it sounds more like how they name text books.....educational.

Craigslist is good.

My shop currently holds a 526 BNW that needs a new front end. $1000. About $1000 to fix.  Sells for $4500

1972 Porsche 914 that <CL Ad Said> "has $7000 body damage estimate" that I got parts for $80.
Paid $1200.  That's mine, not going to sell.  They sell in its condition for up to $8000 but could sell fast for $4000-$5000

1985 prelude for $600.   Just going to detail the crap outa it and put on street for $1500 and see hat is offered.

Tho, all have been sitting cause my injury prevents me from working on them and I'm to cheap to pay someone else to do he work.......

Looking at a slightly wrecked 2004 S-10 in the morning.  Guy wants $2000.   I just need a truck but has potential to flip.   Worries me a bit since the guy won't send me the VIN.   Says he's uncomfortable with that.   I don't want to waste my time.  Want to run VIN before I dive out there......seems odd he won't give it to me.

<update>

Still no truck for me.    Called In the VIN and trucks been totaled twice.   Hack job on repairs.  Safety concerns with front end.   No chance I could flip it and to much repair work to use myself.

It's comeing back.  Still not up to where it was even 2-3 years ago.
On a personal level it's still pretty hard.   Not many car and fewer deals.
Best deals are the online auctions but if you don't have your own mechanic and body guy it's easy to loose your *ss fast.    We get car out of Salt Lake and Pheonix.   Means you can't inspect and have to ship it home.

The 'cash for clunkers' killed the used car market.  Gret for he manufacturers but killed us car guys and dealers.   Add the poor economy and its a bad situation still to this day.

Last time I looked for car the opening bids were higher than typical wholesale.   From opening bid to retail price was only a few grand.   Pay for shipping, inspection,  few repairs (oil change, brakes,) and detail supplies .......your not looking at muh profit.

Tow yards seem to be coming back up but ur looking at older cars and lots of competition.

This article may be out of date, from 2006, and kind of a fluff piece but offers a little thought on the subject of platinum purity.......

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Furnishing your home for free

So let's say I buy an item at the grocery store that is the regular price but it is marked buy one get one free. So are you saying that if I decide to keep the extra item instead of selling it, it means that it wasn't free?  :o

I got my degree in Economics and can tell you that from an Econ perspective, nothing is free.  Everything has a cost associated with it.

From a guy that loves deals and coupons......heck yeah, that was free!

I go to auction hoping to find stuff for myself.   Not looking for old bars, I'm looking for a nice living room set.....almost as rare.

Back to Econ......why would you claim inventory you keep on your income tax?   It was paid for.  (Remember, nothing is free.....)

Why ask here? I would think you could've called.......

Hey, be nice.  I don't see you getting on Travis for starting topics he already knows the answer to.....

I get your point tho.    I get annoyed in forums (not jut here) when some one asks a question and I can google an answer in less time than it took them to post.   But then stp back and remember not everyone is an Internet search god.....or as good looking......as myself and I alway have time to help the peasants......    :)

However, even tho I knew the answer, I understand why the question was asked.   I get so sick of having to look up how to do something on some of these sites.   Even CL, which I use daily, ill see something and wnt to do it and takes a week to find out how.....even tho the solution is right in front of me.

Did that make sense at all?   Pulled my shoulder at he gym so took a Vicodin.   My thoughts are not coming out well......

Not really.  December was brutal.   :'(

Mostly just small housewares and some tools.  Few dollar mark up.

Pyrex, copper pans, few nice chef knives, ........nothing to brag about.

Did get some game used, signed, Seattle Mariners bats from the 1990's.
Not that anyone wants Mariners stuff.....

"My place" buys silver bars/coins for $1 an ounce under market

Scrap gold and silver for 80%-90% of market depending on is much you have, purity.....

Don't know much on platnium and believe the rate was 80% of market.  I would think, but don't know, that a place like Zales probably uses pure.....maybe 950.

As far a I know there is no standard.  As long as its over 50-some percent they can stamp it "plat"

I'll throw out the advice I gave a friend of mine this summer.

Told him to hit auctions, when a small 3x5-ish came up for $100-ish or less ......just buy it.

As long as its full, contents don't really matter.

He got one for $45.

Lessons learned:
Build confidence in bidding.
Bidding process and fee's.
Work, dirt, it takes to empty, haul and clean.
Sorting.
What to do with junk and garbage.
Time it takes to clean, fix, photo, list items.
dealing wih ebayrs, CL-ers, shipping, meeting......and cost associated with it all (shipping, tape...finding boxes)

Since its small you won't have dump fee's, Truck rentals or have to rent unit if you don't have space or time.  If its a dud your not out much at all.

He ended up making a few hundred and had some fun.   But he decided it wasn't for him.  Way more work and time commitment than he ever thought.
