General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Frustrating Day
« on: April 12, 2013, 11:27:06 AM »
Luckily I have the body mass & attitude to say "Get your goofy a$$ out of the way!!" & just push my way through. I realize for some men & most women that might be kind of difficult to do.

I've got the body mass as well.. being 6'4 350 lbs. However, I don't have the attitude. I did walk up on the lockers I was interested in and nose around. I asked them if they were bidding on the locker as a sort of *hint hint*.. but they didn't catch my drift..

Right now I sell from Craigslist and a flea market. I do accept credit cards using Paypal Here. At the flea market it has helped me sell my larger ticket items. Haven't used it on a craigslist sale yet. Only thing to be wary of is the charge for the processing. Paypal is 2.75%.. If you use it for a $200 transaction. Be aware that you'll be paying Paypal $5.50. The other mobile card processors are around the same rate.

I can deal with the shouting and carrying on. But if I'm actively bidding on a locker, I'd like you to get the heck out of my way so I can get a good look! They seemingly purposefully stood in front of each and every locker during the bidding, almost shoulder to shoulder. I don't think I'll be seeing them again, but this was my last opportunity of the week to purchase a locker.

What's it Worth?? / Re: Are trophies worth anything?
« on: April 11, 2013, 10:34:27 AM »
From the 80's-90's.. Not very valuable. But trophies are like art. Subject matter makes all the difference. Since you have larger martial arts trophies, you may have better luck than you would a little league trophy..

The shouting ridiculous amounts was just part of the battle. They hovered around the units once they were opened. The few units I was interested, it was tough to go back for a second look because these guys were blocking the way. They weren't bidding on the unit either. They knew nothing of etiquette. I was one of 3 "regulars" at yesterday's auctions and I didn't want to cause a scene by putting these guys in their place. It was very clear that they were having some kind of "guy's day out".

They did win a locker for $150 with moving blankets covering 2 CRT TV's and 2 half full boxes.. I hope they have fun with it.

General Storage Auction Talk / Frustrating Day
« on: April 10, 2013, 11:12:25 PM »
Today we had a caravan auction in Raleigh and Durham. I drove over 100 miles, saw 14 units and didn't buy a single one. I only saw 4 people that I would classify as regulars. But the most frustrating part were these 3 guys, all friends I suppose. They were kidding around like they were. They were loud, obnoxious, breaking auction rules, being purposefully disruptive during the auction.. For example, when the bidding started up and a few real bidders were in the game, one of them would scream out "500... .... pennies!" This happened repeatedly throughout the day. I asked the DM of this facility (acting auctioneer) to please ask these guys to stop their antics or to have them escorted off the property. He refused.. because they were buying units. It threw me off my game big time.

What strategies do you guys and gals use to drown out these types of people at your auction?

Craigslist / Re: Free Templates for my CL ads....
« on: April 10, 2013, 10:57:51 PM »
In my opinion, an ad that is templated on craigslist is a red flag. I think setting yourself apart by taking better and more pics in your ad is the way to go. I bought 2 shimmery white full panel curtains from the thrift store for $2 and use them as my backdrop for most of my items. Of course, there's some items that are too big for my makeshift photo studio.. But for most of my smalls, it works great! Out of my Raleigh/Durham CL, I'm making between 5 and 15 sales a week.

I've found that when using a template, my ads are either ignored or unpublished. I just type in my text and ad the pic the good old fashioned way and I get much better results. If you didn't sign up for a craigslist account, I'd do so immediately. You can repost your ads every 48 hours with an account.

Craigslist / Re: I think I lost a sale...

Yesterday at the flea market I had a plastic dish rack on my table that I was asking a dollar for. Someone tried haggling with me over a dollar. I just let her have it. I said, "If the dollar is that important to you, you can just have it." She then turned around to her friend and said, "I told you I'd get it cheap, girl!" ..sometimes I hate people..

Found a Noritake china set in a $25 room. Complete! Not as easy to sell as trains and military paraphernalia.. But I'll be there when someone wants to buy really nice, but not too expensive wedding gift!

I got back in there and got a better look at the couches. I think they go together somehow. The arms on the 2 armed couch are different. One is a standard arm, the opposite is not curved and cushioned..

The Lounge / Re: Who's the funniest person on the forum?
« on: April 03, 2013, 03:31:19 PM »
Here's another lame joke..

A priest, a rabbi and a horse walk into a bar. The horse lays a very loud, very long fart. The priest looks at the bartender and says, "Oh my, my son, I am so sorry. That was very impolite." The bartender says, "It's okay Father. I thought it was the horse."

The bedroom set sold for $1050. I listed it late last night on Craigslist. I had 4 people call today before 2:00 PM. The second person to come see it made me a reasonable offer and I jumped on it. I still have the pillow top mattress and end tables to sell.

Gotta love tax time!

Plumber Wars.. It's the crappiest show on TV.

War Wars.. Nations compete for the right to bomb N. Korea first.

Chinese Food Wars.. Only lasts 3 weeks before being canceled because nobody can understand what they're saying..

Taxi Wars.. Follow NYC cab drivers as they compete for high fares..

Hooker Wars.. No explanation needed.

Doctor Wars.. Health Professionals sell you on the best treatment for your ailment. Think of the characters.. "The Gambler", "The Young Gun", "The Collector".. etc.
