Garage Sales / Re: Throw it all in boxes, and let them dig for it
« on: October 10, 2011, 12:47:02 PM »
this is my strategy, mainly because of laziness on my part but i do think its the best way to go. first off people want dirt cheap prices expect to be getting paid in 0.50 pennies.

My attitude if people want to pay such dirt cheap prices they can work for their finds digging through boxes.

With storage auctions you have so many little odds and ends even if you do have tables you can only fit so much and still have it easy to sort through and if you have dishes and wne glasses and stuff expect people to break them.

At the very most if you have several large tables maybe do a $1 everything on this table organization but for the most part I throw out tubs and let people dig. It's generalyl barely worth your time evne taking a day to sit outside and wait for people so why also make yourself work for three days before the sale labeling an organizing

I was recently at a high school reunion a buddy of mine is a computer programer and has several apps on the apple market. Were working on comming out with a storage auction app that lists auctions nad gives turn by turn directions. There's a million location based apps so this would be easy to come up with just a twist on all the other location based apps programming is pretty basic for someone who does that for a living. Trying to decide whether to charge for the app or jut make money off advertising I'm leaning towards free as I rarely pay for apps.

What's it Worth?? / Re: Antique Dollhouse
« on: October 03, 2011, 06:14:38 PM »
This is one of those wierd items where if you find the right buyer I could see getting $500 to $1000 if you make the fixes but more than likely if you don't actively seek out people interested in this and find the perfect buyer I think $100 is more likely.

Garage Sales / Re: Another garage sale
« on: October 03, 2011, 11:15:29 AM »
The one thing about garage sales if your trying to get flea market or retail prices dont bother having one. I literally had people paying me in pennies for .50cent items.

I would have items brand new in packaging for cheap cheap prices and people would still try to haggle me down to a buck.

I accidentally had a pair of brand new coach shoes i hadn't planned on selling at the sale but on ebay. someone asked i told them $8 they wnated them for two these had never been worn. wound up getting like $55 plus shipping on ebay.

garage sales basically you have to just take whatever somnene is willing to pay usually under $2 or your wasting your time. I normally make my profit and then hav ea garage sale and am basically willing to take anytghing as otherwise its going to good will.

I made like $150 my last garage sale i think my highest priced single item was like $10. Sold an almost full set of noritake china for like $9 sites like replacements sell one piece for like $18-$26 but if you cant sel it on ebay or resale shop what else you going to do with it.

my best customers were the soccer mom types who werent totally cheap. i had TONS of name brand clothes limited, guess, forever 21, bebe, dkny, d&g and was basically telling theese moms who wnatd a bunch of stuff fill up a garbage bag and we'll come to a fair price.

eBay / Re: Ebay Shipping via USPS Flat Rate
« on: September 25, 2011, 07:25:56 PM »
Sounds like your one of the few people the post office is still making money off of lol.

Software, books, cd's, dvd's, etc should be shipped media mail. It's a bit slow but is by far the cheapest option. If you prefer to ship quicker consider doing first class mail with is anything under 13oz it will pretty much guranteed be under $4 and it will get there in 3 days.

Flat rate can ship upwards of like 70 or 80 pounds. I sell copper pennies and bars and ship them in those flat rate boxes and it costs me $5 to ship a 15 pound box its awesome. For lighter items its not smart to use flat rate boxes though.

Around the holidays use first class over media mail or media mail can take like a month

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Used TV's and computers?
« on: September 25, 2011, 07:22:10 PM »
There's a lot of valuable metals inside tv's and computers. Mini fridges, microwaves and window A/C all have quite a bit of metals too.

I don't think the show will affect renters behavior much. Even before the shows came on you'd come across certain units with like 6 locks on the floor, this is generally a bad sign and generally means the people have been locked out and threatened with an auciton paid up removed some good stuff, fell behind locked up again paid up took some more stuff, etc.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: I'm quickly learning to hate pianos
« on: September 25, 2011, 07:16:09 PM »
I've bought three units with Pianos. One was a nice Yamaha Grand Piano wound up getting $6500 for it was hoping more like 10k but that wasn't happening so decided to settle as that's still a good payout, only paid 2k for the unit.

I've bought two other pianos, one I wound up holding onto forever and finally sold for $50 and another one I couldn't get anyone to pay for it. I put it up on craigslist for free and the guy who picked it up was named Billy Joe and had a bed and breakfast he offered me a free stay at but had no desire to go.

I quickly lost interest in these shows and won't watch them unless literally nothing else is on. Hell I'd probably watch certain infomercials over storage wars or auction hunters.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Blue Prints - building plans
« on: September 25, 2011, 07:07:56 PM »
If the blueprints are for a historical building or even a cool or popular building may be worth a little something. If it's just blue prints to a house or plain old bank or something just dump them.

Soemtimes stuff that's seemingly worthless has some value. I found a bunch of railroad pictures, training manuals, track layout plans, etc and there's a ton of people into collecting railroad stuff so was able to turn that into some money

I don't run up the bid and think it's kind of a dumb thing to do. I have never been into doing this but at least in the past when crowds were small you could sort of justify or say your making smoeone else spend more money so they maybe will run out of money by the end of the day leaving a few units for you.

Today the crowds are so large there's no shortage of people with money so your accomplishing nothing by taking more of one persons money because there's 30 other people with a pocket full of money as opposed to 3 or 4 like it used to be.

Also I dont get why you were mad, because someone else was also itnerestd in a unit? That's not a reason to run someone up. The ONLY time I would consider running someone up is if soemoen is buying every single unit all day long. I know there's no rules every man for himself but I think there's kind of an unspoken rule take a few units and then let others bid aand get some units. If your buying everything your going to piss people off and have people running you up.

I agree with what a fwe others have said though. You don't want to pay more for a unit so why make soemoene else pay more for a unit your not interested in and for no reason? What goes around comes around if you run ohters up people will run you up so your hurting yourself.

On the topic of flashlights I would say only about 5 or 10% of people actually have a flashlight thats worth a damn. I see people show up with these mini maglights like thats gonna do anything. I dont know about flashlights in terms of cnadlepower or any of that jazz but unless you have one of the floodlight types say a pizza delivery driver uses to spot houses your flashlight is pretty much worthelss on any unit bigger than say a 5x5.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: how many of yall do this full time?
« on: September 05, 2011, 11:36:32 AM »
I was all gunho to do this full time a few months back although I have to admit the high priced units and the grind of unloading old clothes and household crap has really taken it's toll on me and I've kind of taken a step back from this business.

I'm still buying a unit or two a week but not heading out to auctions every free minute I have.

Though I'm still buying units and still selling on ebay I've been opting for smaller profits and pretty much unloading everything on other resalers and taking a small cut for myself.

I've been kind of focusing on some other ventures and things I have going on. I did recenty learn of an opportunity for a very cheap retail space in a perfect area for a resale business and the best part no commitment as far as lease and being tied down for a year or anything like that.

FThis kind of has my interest peaked in once again looking into a store.

I think all of us at one time or antoher have thought about it. I have seen some fail in my area and some succeed. The ones that seem to succeed have a twist to the normal resale shop whether it be it caters to women, has more  upscale stuff, etf.

In my area we also have a bunch of non profit places opening up. They don't buy stuff in strictly take donations so even though were getting bulk stuff for cheap they are getting things for free. I saw one with really good prices like a dollar per clothing item. I think that is pretty competitive. I think Goodwill can be a ripoff. When I bought my house a few years back I stopped in to donate stuff but decided to look around. They are asking like $2 and $3 for a kitchen glass or plate thats not even part of a set. Prices just seemed really high to me.

I think in addition to being a resale shop you need to have some niche or some angle. Also maybe supplement the business by taking things on consignment, doing an we sell your stuff on ebay component to the business, run an auction a few nights a week, etc.
