eBay / Re: Ebay Shipping via USPS Flat Rate
« on: October 23, 2011, 05:13:16 PM »
Sounds like you have it right that a carrier missed the scan. We have been transitioning to tracking on all packages and scanning is the most important thing. One of the PO's problems is the absolute protection of bad employees by the unions. If the PO could rid itself of the bottom 20% it would make a tremendous difference. When we go to 5 day delivery there will not be issues with sub carriers we have now. We have a lot of hard working folks at our office, but a couple bad apples make us all look unprofessional. As someone who sorts packages for delivery, I appreciate everyones business.

By the way... that was piss poor customer servive when you called your PO, bad management is another problem!

craiglstauction..... When a carrier attempts delivery of a sig con and the customer is not there a notice is left and the package is returned and will be held for 15 days before it is returned to sender. Your customer may have waited a couple weeks until they came to pick it up. The USPS tracking site should have shown an attempted scan a few days after mailing if this is the case. Not sure about the letter, give me some more info and I'll try to help figure out what happened.

Hopefully you "earned" some good karma helping out your family. Making Mom happy is a nice reward. I have given mine some stuff she wanted and she worked my yardsale with me in return.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Framed pictue unit
« on: October 17, 2011, 08:03:17 AM »
Thanks. Been a busy week with a lot of OT at the regular job, haven't had time to do anything with this unit yet. Did some research Sunday and got a few nice finds here. One is a framed/matted Norman Rockwell litho print that is flawless. I found an identicle one with a messed up matt that sold for 35.00 online. Some of the other prints are by well known artists that sold online for 5.00 - 15.00 as well as a print of a watercolor that is signed by the artist that sold online for 20.00 with no frame. The luggage is a 4 piece vintage Trojan hardcase set from the 60's and is in excellant condition with the key to lock them. So it's time to get busy and make some $.

onealx4.......... thanks for the great idea, I'm going to look into that!

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: A trend? Pre-cut locks...
« on: October 15, 2011, 11:03:03 AM »
Pre-cut locks are the norm here in TN. I've been to dozens of auctions and only one time did they cut the owners lock off at the auction. The 8 units I have won did not give me any reason to think they had been tampered with or I would not have found the items I did. If the locker owner shows up with the rent just before the auction and items are missing there will be some splainin to do. I saw an auction stopped in the middle of bidding because owner showed up and paid.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: How appropriate

jrossjr, I have great respect for your knowledge and experience so I'm not suprised by your non losing streak. I got away from my gameplan and it will cost me 30-40 bucks, not a major loss. I calculated my Return (sales + resale value of items kept) to Cost of Units ratio and was 4.04 to 1.00. This was before the bad unit and was greatly influenced by a unit I have made 9x the cost so far, though I have done quite well on the others. With the other costs factored in this has still been a profitable venture for doing it as a second job. The problem with doing this for a Get Rich Quick Scheme is the lack of preparedness will bite you in the ass. To be successful at this takes planning, discipline, patience and constantly growing knowledge. You and the veterans here helped me get started and I will always be grateful. Got a small unit yesterday that I will easily double my money, so lesson learned and stick to the gameplan. Looking forward to you jumping back in.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Framed pictue unit

Got a nice little unit yesterday for 65.00 that had 27 framed pictures, 2 oil on canvas paintings, a bunch of glassware, luggage set, patio chairs and misc. smalls. Took 2 trips in van, 6 total miles, zero clothes, zero trash and didn't even have to sweep. Feeling better than last week.  :)

Happened to me last week, not a fun time working on a loser. Make the best of it and move on. I got a nice little unit yesterday that will make up my loss and then some. Good luck on your next unit.

Garage Sales / Re: Throw it all in boxes, and let them dig for it

If your traffic was 150 - 200 shoppers for a combined Fri/Sat sale 7:00-2:00, would you change your approach? With that kind of traffic digging through boxes may be a little tough.

This is a favorite topic for me as I planned on yardsales as my main way to sell all the smalls and clothes I get. I have posted my thoughts and methods before but am curious about a couple things. Size of town? Type of advertising? How do you price? I'm always looking for new ideas from successful yardsales regardless of method, so if you get a chance to post some specifics I would greatly appreciate it.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Here is a dumb question......
« on: October 09, 2011, 08:32:48 AM »
You gotta love the "green" movement. With the cost of business where you are the margin for error is pretty slim. It's almost a suprise to not see a mattress in a unit around here, I hate them but can dump them for free anytime I want to. Good luck to you.

Yes. Decided after first couple units that I can't get caught up in all that stuff because it will just drag me down. Finding pics of the kids when I have all their toys and clothes still tugs at me a little, but have to sell it and move on. I would think it gets to be less of an issue with time and more units. The veterans will have better perspective.

It's funny, when I tell people that I buy storage units they always ask two questions in some form "Is it just like the shows" and " What good stuff have you found". It's almost like deflating a balloon when I tell them that you can find valuable items but you have to be able to make your money selling common household goods. The most I've sold a single item for is 100.00, yet I have been very profitable. Selling hundreds of clothes at 50 cents isn't as sexy as a hovercraft but I'll do it. When the boys find one of the retired space shuttles in a unit I'm not watching anymore.
