eBay / Re: More eBay fees?????
« on: February 04, 2012, 12:32:27 AM »
@money: We've been talking about antique malls. They want 10% plus rent!!

@moon: I really just started selling on ebay a few weeks ago, and I know I have a lot to learn. The shipping aspect was the toughest for me to figure out. I really like the free listings, simply because paying to list stuff I wasn't sure would sell was something that kept me from ebay for a long time.

They started doing this maybe 8 months or so ago.

I assume they did it because of those people who have a $.99 auction with $32 shipping.

It's annoying, but just something to work into your math. I'll pay FVF on shipping to get free listings every month. Would rather pay a little more on something sold than pay for a listing that didn't sell.

Flea Markets / Re: My adventures at the Antique/flea market

Pricing wise, our antique market wants $2.60/ sq. ft. + 10%. So a 10x10 booth would be $260/month. You are ahead of us there.  :)

The nice thing is, a lot of your inventory can be out in front of the public instead of being stored and that also means more space to move around wherever you would normally keep it.

Honestly, if ours was $90/month, we would jump on it, but at $260 we're not sure if they have the traffic to justify it.

Good luck!

I bit the bullet and rented 2 spaces.  Guess we will see how I do. Going today to start setting up.

Please keep us up to date on how you do there. My wife and I are debating renting at the local antique malls, but aren't sure if it's worth the overhead.

I would love to hear about someone else's results. Might warrant a new thread though.

Good Luck!!

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Just started, here's my first go at it

Just so everyone on the board is aware, Legos sell well on Ebay and most people sell used Legos by the pound.

It might be good to check out different people's listings to see how they do it. You'll probably get more out of them than you would have thought.

Congrats on your first "win." For most people, just getting started is the hardest part.

Donations & Taxes / Re: Anyone been to Goodwill auctions?

I weould be concerned about quality. Most of the items have been on the floor of Goodwill and havn't sold,There was probably a reason.

Again, this is where my Goodwill location is different. The majority of the auction items never make it to the sales floor. If something cool comes in, they will set it aside for the auction.

Usually, they will bundle items into themed lots, so as pieces come in, they will be added to the "disney" lot or the "sports" lot and so forth.

At our Goodwill, the best stuff is in the auctions.

The Colibri might be worth a few bucks, but I literally mean a FEW bucks.

They're mid-range lighters, typically $30-$100 new retail, but they don't have the kind of following of Zippo or S.T. Dupont and don't hold their value all that well.

Plus, I've seen some quality issues with them. You'll want to test it before trying to sell it.

Our Goodwill has signs in the store advertising the auctions and they preview the auction lots for about 5 days leading up to the auction day, so it was staring us in the face. My wife was shopping there during an auction day and, based on what she saw, encouraged me to go to one. We've gone almost every week since mid-November.

I don't recall any of the locations back home (los angeles) doing these auctions, but I simply may not have been aware of them.

I have found recently that both Goodwill and Salvation Army (in my area) are doing research on the better items that look like they might be worth more...this would be on electronics, etc that I look at.

I found an item at SA that had a printout from the internet fastened to it. Internet price was $1,000. They had it stickered for $300. I went to the furniture section and sat down with my iPad and eBay showed one listed at $500 and it was the 2nd time around as completed showed it had not sold before at $500 and it was the only completed. I passed on that one.

*****
On the other hand at the SA daily auction of as-is items, I found an item which I got for $20 which I think I can sell for $80 or so. It is for owners of those big $250K to $500K motorhomes and sells new for $125 to $150.

I haven't been to one of those SA auctions for about 7 years, but have decided to start going for single items; the 4' square wire bins are of little interest to me.

MovieMan has been replaced by a bot who can only repeat the same post over and over!!!

I think the quality issues of Goodwill auction items is based on who is running the auctions.

My local Goodwill runs an auction every week, typically 150 or so lots, and they put most of the really good items they receive into the auctions. Sure, the lots contain junk, too, but I've had good success, so long as I stick to my bidding strategy.

Last week I got a Coke/Pepsi collectibles lots that had about 35 sellable pieces in it for $30. Included was one of these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ande-Rooney-Coca-Cola-Coke-Porcelain-Sign-/360413206290?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53ea4d1712

I'm doing well at Goodwill auctions, but it seems to come down to who is running that locations auctions. The store we go to, they have a staff of about 4 who work the auctions week after week and they love doing the auctions and it shows in the final results.

Most of the bidders are resellers who come week after week. Most of them have their niches of what they like to buy and apparently are doing good enough to keep coming back.

It sucks that most of you have had poor results with them, cause it's been my bread & butter lately.

Just saw an ad for a new one (to me, anyway) called Dirty Money about garbage pickers who sell at fleas in New York.

Looks like they also do quite a bit of re-purposing. It's on Planet Green. I'm guessing because it's a form of recycling.

Think I would hold some fabric aside to  reupholster chairs...

I like that idea.

I'm keeping a couple pieces for ebay photo backdrops. I drape it over my couch and have a good spot to shoot my items.

I find ending on Auctions on Sundays and Mondays 7-10Pm eastern are the most productive.

I think I'll try my next batch for a Sunday evening close. Been doing Saturday night end times, but will switch it up this week and see how it goes.

Plus it buys me an extra day to get my listings together!

Sorry can't do it !Couldn't do it when Michael Jackson past away either.

I understand it and respect it.

Still, I think it's an important conversation for us to have, so that each seller can at least be aware of the phenomenon within the resale marketplace.

My wife and I bought a fabric + peripherals lot at our charity auction. We spent $23 on the lot with 100+ pounds of fabrics, yarn, quilting supplies, etc.

I know we will make money on it, but I'm starting to wonder if it's worth the time and effort needed to turn it over. And honestly, it's so cumbersome, I've been avoiding it.  ;)

Oh well. Etsy, here we come!
