Picker's Paradise / Re: Picking Antique Malls
« on: March 06, 2014, 07:48:44 PM »
I did meet a gentleman that had a stall.  Was just BSing and asked about sales.  He said he sells very little at the antique mall but the stall was actually cheaper than the the storage unit he use to house it all in.

He can store his stuff and have the benefit of it being on display, for sale, seven days a week.  He lists a lot on CL & etsy so if it sells at mall he just pulls the listing.  He marks everything really high but has a box for offers or clerks will call him.

He also said its funny because more than once he has had an item marked at say $100 at the mall.
On CL he lists it at a more 'going rate' of $50, sold for $40, and when he sold it the person has said "I saw one of these at an antique mall for $100!....."     So I guess his stall is a marketing tool also.   One that is hurting us pickers because people see it there and think "hey! I have one of those" and want that price for theirs or estate sale companies start marking that item really high......

What's it Worth?? / Re: Mushroom stoneware set?
« on: March 06, 2014, 09:35:15 AM »
I think I would break up the set.  Sell off plates cheap as set and sell canisters and stuff seperate on someplace like etsy.

Can't see many people wanting the whole set but can see someone looking at canister or soup tureen as "cute" or artsy.

I was going to one almost every weekend just to see what was selling and prices.  I never found anything that could be flipped.  Only thing I ever bought was some lids for copper pots.  Even those weren't priced great but makes a faster sale on pots if they have lids.

I never saw anyone buy a thing.  Stuff marked 2-3 times of what I'm asking for same item and I'm not getting any calls.

I think your at the end of the food chain when going to those malls.  All the meat has been picked clean....

Vehicles at Storage Auctions / Re: Do you bid on vehicles at auctions?
« on: February 21, 2014, 11:28:42 AM »
I do.  Only thing I've even won was a scooter.  I (IMO) get outbid because I bid according to work vs parts value while others bid on straight sale.   Parting out is more money but people seem to bid as if they are going to restore it and make a bundle.  And they seem to think cars are valued way higher than they are.

I saw a guy bid $2600 on an old CJ5 jeep.  He was saying he's seen them go for $10,000.
Yeah, but to get $10k your going to have to dump in $20k of parts and hundreds of hours of labor!
Plus you can buy one you know it runs and has a clear title, in *okay* shape, for $1000!

I like to part out.  Don't have to worry about title, don't care if it runs, has keys.....

If I want cars to part out I go to dealerships and by the junk trade-ins. Or if to flip I use my friends dealer license  and go to the auto auction.

Picker's Paradise / Pawn shop pick.
« on: February 16, 2014, 03:13:58 PM »
Just got a Star Wars edition R2D2 xbox package at a pawn shop for $140 out-the-door.

Have already been offered an standard xbox and $150 cash for it!

I'd never been to this one. Was just driving buy.  Awesome retail prices.  Really small place.  Guy said they just try to move product.  If someone doesn't pick up pawned items they look at how much they are into it, how much was paid back.  Try to recoup money plus 20-30% but always take offers. Don't have space to be holding retail items.

I'll be back.

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Has anyone had experience with Worthpoint?
« on: February 15, 2014, 11:37:07 AM »
I never tried it once i saw all the complaints that after free trial its hard to cancel.   They just keep billing your card.

Also, what something sold for a few years ago is worthless IMO.  I only use recent history.  Sure, there are those special items that don't sell often and any "last sold for" is better than nothing.  But Also, the economy sucked these past years. Everyone was selling their stuff and, supply & demand, prices were down.

Mainly, I just see a billion complaints and bad reviews about billing issues.  Red flag.

I've been trying to figure out the whole figurine (sp?) market.   Like the Clowns and hobo's....
I see them all the time at estate sales and are usually marked cheap because they don't have time to research each one.   But I see them SELLING on ebay for $25-$250.  I can't tell/remember the $1 one from $1000 one.

Same with Disney stuff.  Market pretty much fell out on that fad but still some pricey stuff out there.
But I don't know a thing about that stuff.  You put two of those "stills" that were so popular in the 90's next to each other and to me they look exactly the same.  But one is worthless and the other is $500....?

I don't know about facilities in your area but around here I don't know anyone that knows anything about MJ that would use a storage unit go grow.   Can't control climate and pests would be number one problem.  You get mites or bit of fungus and your $$2000-3000/lb crop just dropped to almost nothing.
Then security?  Not like your hiding the smell.    And power?  Facility isn't going to like you using it for free.   Water?.....

I don't know why they do this as I don't believe it is a law here in WA that they must.

I've never seen a law, either.

However, every auctioneer around here has said if they see them, they take them.....so if not in open, don't tell them!

Once taken, King County Police will run to see if stolen, you bring receipt from auction and pass background check and they "may" return them.  Local police it's very unlikely you'll see them again.

They can claim only the last registered owner can pick it up which they don't have the resources to even know who the last registered owner was unless its only been one owner or buyer sent in transfer paperwork.   Or they claim the locker owner owns it because they took before you bought the unit.

Both are BS from a legal standpoint but to fight it would be more money/time than the firearm is worth in most cases.

My opinion is once LE gets their hands on valuables, it's gone.    In some departments it's greed, I think they fund themselves a bit with police auctions.  I'm not a conspiracy guy or anti-police, I have a lot of friends and family in law enforcement, but I do think it happens.  Beyond that small percent of departments I just think the police don't have the man-hours to track down every owner of every recovered item or in this case to determine who is legally entitled to the firearm.

Ive never worried about it.  99% of units are opened before auction so facility can "inventory". So if there was a firearm....it's gone, you wouldn't know.  Or, if they open it and you see a gun the price of the unit just jumped to a level beyond my willingness to pay because everyone is hoping for "hidden" firearms and/or ammo/accessories.

I think the likelihood of finding firearms these days are slim.  With the shows it seems people are getting items out before they get behind.  And more facilities have a clause about firearm storage, its a no-no.  Lastly, renters insurance won't cover firearms in units anymore (at least mine won't)

But some of it sells!
.

True, true.

But I wouldn't think of your picks as Tchotchke.   I considered it more like cheap figurines and gaudy snow globes from Vegas casinos......

I know what it is but I never would have known how to spell it!

This is the Yiddish spelling.....most of us spell it C-R-A-P.

eBay / Re: Is eBay exempt from state auction laws?
« on: February 11, 2014, 11:06:29 AM »
I think that that law applies to lien sales. Ebay is not a lien sale site. You're selling your personally owned property. In storage auctions, once the auction is started, and bids are placed, the owner of the locker can only bid on the unit. Online storage auctions can cancel the auction up until the unit is paid for at the facility because the auction is not considered completed until the unit is paid for.. This is how I understand the law.

This has been a cause of trouble at some auctions.
I've been to some where manager comes running up and stops bidding because owner is there to pay.  Another the unit was bid on and over and guy went to pay only to be told it was paid up.

I like my main auctioneer.  He dictates that the notices say "by 11am" and will hold auction 30 minutes later or by "the 13th" and hold auction on 14th.  We have actually had to stop and stand around for a while because on one unit he saw it said 12pm and it was 11:56.
Once he starts it's gone to the highest bidder.  End of story.

eBay / Re: Is eBay exempt from state auction laws?

I can't see how there could be a law against retracting an item after a bid has been placed, in specific fact.  Its to broad.   There has to be an "unless" in there.  Unless there is a reserve, unless owner pays first....
I'd like to see the law he is talking about.

As for ebay.  Your not auctioning item, your probably not auctioning in the USA....

Ebay is auctioning item for you, probably from some nice tax haven po box on an island that hires one dude to come in and forward the mail......
