General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Let's Play: "What Would You Pay?"
« on: February 13, 2014, 03:55:04 PM »
Just from that picture alone, in my area I would go to $200, but I probably would have lost it. There are a few people where I am at that like to pay big money for lockers like that. They don't resell anything really. They just buy what they like, and they seem to like lockers that look like that.

eBay / Re: eBay Wants to Use Pictures We Take in THEIR catalog
« on: February 12, 2014, 10:58:34 AM »
I personally hate it when someone uses a stock photo.  Anybody can Google something and see a stock picture.....I want to see a picture of the item I am buying that shows it's true condition and any potential flaws BEFORE I spend my money.

To me it really depends on the item. As a buyer? If it is a brand new item in retail packaging. Do I even really need a photo? Let alone a phot of the exact item. I guess it can give me a warm fuzzy. But, as a seller, if I have several hundred of an item that are all identical, Do I really want to take the time to photograph and track each individual item? No, A few example photos and a statement in the description stating that what you will receive is most likely not the exact item in the photos, I think that is good enough. Used items are a different story. That being said, my example photos are of 1 of my actual items, not stock photos.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #2....February, 2014
« on: February 10, 2014, 11:03:07 AM »
Went to my first auction of the year on Saturday. It was a facility in my town that hadn't had an auction since I started buying units 1 1/2 years ago. So, I was pretty excited about what could possibly be up for auction. They had 6 units on the auction block including one from a roofing company(I was thinking tools and materials, could be some big money). Well first unit was crap. I think it went for $50. 2nd unit was the roofing unit. Big 20x20 with a bunch of random material in piss-poor condition and a couple of random tools. Not enough profit with all the work of cleanout not to mention materials considered hazardous that the dump won't accept. Needless to say I passed. Next 2 units were crap as well. 5th unit they opened had a homemade butcher block style table and benches and a lot of mid-century furniture. Also had 2 speaker boxes labeled Pioneer CS-88 ($300-$400 on eBay incl. shipping). But they are never in there right. Nice looking vintage couch possibly leather. Also had an old wringer washer. As well as some other unknowns. I had a good feeling on this unit so I bid. I ended up getting it for $475. A little more than I wanted to pay, but still a decent price for what I could see. The gut bidding against me, ended up buying a couple of items off me already. (crap thing about it is that he said if he had thought more about it, he wouldn't have bid me up and just bought the things from me  :-[) Anyway, the speakers were in the boxes and in great shape. :) and I also found a Sansui 1000A Stereo Tube amplifier which goes on eBay for $600-$800 including shipping in good condition. It is in it's original box and shipping box as well, so my guess is it is in pretty good shape. There is also a lot of other various mid-century items, that I found. When all is said and done I may make about $1500 -$2000 off of this unit.  ;) Pretty good auction day. Oh yeah, no dump runs and no personal info to give back.

I also can dump for free(mattresses, couches, pretty much anything that is not considered hazardous) and live I 5 mins from the dump. Most time it is easier for me to just dump it then to try to get someone to take it for free.

eBay / Re: Waiting them out on eBay

Since it was a buy it now listing, you should've had the immediate payment required option checked.

Unfortunately in my case, they won't let me set immediate payment requirement because I do not have an eBay store. I don't know if MM has an eBay store. I think it is their wayu of forcing people to get a store. I do not sell enough consistently to justify the monthly expense myslef.

eBay / Re: Misleading Listing on eBay

Similar to the seller I got from, may be a chinese firm working out of LA, who knows, but if it does end up shipping from china I'd be pissed. On small cheap things like that that I need quick, most of the time my decision to buy is based on location in hopes of getting it sooner. Good Luck.

I think they are actually asking about getting started at auctions as a buyer, using the term auctioneer as one who goes to auctions rather than the one conducting the auction. If you read the whole post you can get that from the context. I could be wrong, just my interpretation. :)

I would suggest not getting too worked up until you see how long it actually takes, I bought a tv remote control from a guy in the LA area. He shipped it DHL golbal also for some reason even though I am a 2 hour drive from him. Got here in about 3-4 days, so took longer than USPS but still ok. I did notice after the fact alot of people complained in his feedback about him using DHL to ship it as they usually just hand it off to USPS so taking longer, but oh well, some sellers have their wierd quirks or agreements with certain shippers.

eBay / Re: How does FedEx flat rate compare to USPS?
« on: February 06, 2014, 02:46:12 PM »
We'll

#1 Smartpost = free $100 insurance - You don't get that with flat rate..
#2 Do you have the discounted rates from EBAY? I have yet to see any flat rate cheaper from USPS, with the exception of the small box and the padded envelope.  It also might be because I live in FL.

Take a look at the images... This is what I see..

I live in CA so I am in the same boat as you about having to ship coast to coast, not lucky enough to live in the middle of the country and get those cheaper postage rates all around. I checked with a 5-6 lb package and smart post was $10.xx with up to 7 day delivery, regional rate A ibox is max 3 day delivery. Also with new postal changes all priority mail comes with $50 insurance, any priority mail through ebay labels gets $100 insurance, yes I do get a bonus discount for being a toprated seller and a power seller, so maybe that makes a difference, but the major deciding factor for me is convenience. USPS 95% is cheaper for me and what I ship, and the other 5% of the time fedex is just to inconvenient. Time = money and Fedex does not sve me time where I live.

Cheapest way to ship from 1 to 8 lbs is "Fedex SmartPost" through ebay..

This intrigued me, so I did some double checking and as long as I can fit my item into a regional rate A box, it is cheaper still to use USPS as it ships at the 2lb rate. Regional Rate B ships at the 4lb rate, regional rate C ships at the 17lb rate. I will have to look more closely at fedex smart post though because if I have to send Parcel select USPS then smartpost has about the same shipping time and may be cheaper. But I also have to deal with convenience, in my situation post office is alot more convenient.

Not recently, last I did compare though most of the time USPS was better and USPS is much more convenient for me.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Hardest things to find in storage units
« on: February 06, 2014, 10:11:44 AM »
Large collections of old Magic the Gathering Cards. I hope I find some in every unit, but alas it has been to no avail yet. I unit I passed on I found out later had some in it, doh!  :-[ but I don't think they were as old as what I am looking for. I see ebay auctions everyday of people who found some in storage units, but has not been my fortune yet.

Where I live there is only one paper that publishes them. I live in the sticks. Only 5-10 auctions a year unless I go out of town 1 1/2 hours away. Did that when I first started. realized time and gas wasn't worth it at the moment. Plus lockers were going for a premium there.  :'(

eBay / Re: Ebay global shipping program

I have been using it for the past year or so. I have not had any issues with it, made a few sales end with a higher bid because of it. Depending on what I am selling, I may ship international outside of the GSP because, they charge very high shipping charges plus high estimated import charges, and I  know from people who have messaged me that I have lost a few international bids because of this. So there are pros and cons. What I do like is that as long as it arrives in Kentucky in good shape, I don't have to worry if it gets lost or damaged in shipping.
