Online Storage Auctions / Re: Trilpled my money today online!
« on: March 29, 2013, 10:20:32 PM »
I did look through it and didn't see anything regarding online auctions. I was just wondering due to the fact that there are NO NC online auctions.. Maybe it's just an untapped market?

Does anyone know if there is a law outlawing online storage auctions in NC?

I'd also look into a step van. You can get a nice 14 foot step van for about $4k around here..

Online Storage Auctions / Re: The pros of online storage auctions
« on: March 28, 2013, 10:45:42 PM »
Here's how I view online storage auctions.. I would keep up with an online storage auction site, if there were auctions in my area. Would I buy? Probably not.. But you asked for pros..

1. You save money on gas, traveling from auction to auction.
2. You can study the pictures of the unit over a couple of days and really evaluate the value of a locker.
3. You take out the crowd element. The crowd can be influential. "You're not gonna let him get that locker, are you?"
4. Sure beats standing out in the rain, bidding on lockers. (Don't you miss the days when if it rained, there'd be 3 people at the auction?)

One of the biggest cons to me, is that you're dealing with yahoo's from all areas, running up the bid based on little or no knowledge. I much prefer to just deal with my own local yahoo's..

The Treasure Chest / Not Really A Treasure But...
« on: March 28, 2013, 10:33:45 PM »
I bought a locker on Tuesday for $400.. Had a complete king size bedroom set with mattress. Mattress was lightly used, and wrapped in plastic. Put it up on craigslist with 8 pics today at 4 p.m. for $1,000. Sold it today at 6:45 for $900. Still have the misc stuff to go through and post, nothing exciting. A decent plate set for 4, another plate set but missing 1 dinner plate, microwave, 3 Time Warner Cable boxes, and some UNC basketball jerseys (Nike)..

I was shocked at how quickly I sold this bedroom set! I swore when I bought it, I'd be hanging onto it for a couple of weeks!

The Lounge / Re: What is the deal with web designers?
« on: March 27, 2013, 11:45:53 AM »
Web design firms typically put your work on a queue with other jobs. If you have a change request, it goes on the list and they get to it in order. If they have a lot of requests, it could be a couple of days, weeks even, before you see the change on your site. If your request is complex, they may have some difficulty creating the script to make it work properly.

There are A LOT of bad firms out there. In some cases, they just have a bad system of working requests. There are also A LOT of firms that outsource their programming (I used to work for one). Firms like that can take weeks to months to develop a relatively simple script.

I really think those guys were just on a trial run. Now the public opinion is in, and they weren't as personable as the producers thought.

Interesting to see Mark Balelo in possibly his last episode.. Outside of the auction, that guy really has a short fuse!

I didn't see a dedication or mention of his death in the ending credits. Did anyone else see it? I had it DVR'd so I could have skipped past it.

I would just like to point out that the survey results look like a big middle finger.

Different storage facilities have different ideas of what is "cleaned out". How far do you go to make sure that your unit is cleaned out?

Generally, empty the unit and sweep clean. However, I don't go to the extent of clearing cobwebs or "dusting" the walls, etc.

The Lounge / Re: Why don't members here answer poll questions?
« on: March 24, 2013, 09:30:32 PM »
Agree with Alloro. Typically with any poll, the answers are pigeon-holed to get the answers the pollster wants. That's generally speaking. But, what I've seen here, the polls are worded much better, which is why I've participated  ;)

I've got an Argus Photo Previewer from the 50's that I can't get rid of.. I guess it just depends on what you've got.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Survey Part 2

I would drive further to clean out a unit that I've already paid for because the mystery of whether I'm going to win a unit or not is gone. I know I'm going to get something. So I'll pop for a truck (for now) and drive a bit further.

I chose 30 miles or less.. But this is because I don't own my own box truck yet, so I have to rent. Once I get my own truck, I'll open my radius to 100 miles or so.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Everybody's gearing up for the sale over the weekend.
