Craigslist / Re: Any successful Craigslist sells?
« on: July 31, 2013, 08:54:03 AM »
It's nearly impossible to give away bars of gold on CL. People blow my mind.

Yep, sometimes cList is as dead as a doornail. Weeks can go by with no sale. Other times they come quickly.

Here's my accounting of Craigslist sales for July:

This gal told it like it was in her social postings on YouTube, etc and it cost her the job.

An interesting point made by an older female reporter (in this video) seemed right to me....younger reporters are more used to using social media than those who got in the business years ago and have difficulty defining the lines between job reporting and social reporting...one is business, the other is personal. This time it burned her.

The land of fruits and nuts....that sounds about right.  ;D

All kidding aside, I spent 3 years in Orange County and I can honestly say, Californians are probably some of the nicest and most open minded people I have ever meet.

I don't know if I have the right state pictured below or not, but.....

"Texas....home of steers and queers"

I lived in Dallas for a year (after migrating from Kansas) and really don't have much to say about it one way or the other, but I DO remember moving to California after that.

Will it never die ?

This story in my own area....central valley of California.  The 400-500 mile long central valley is known for all the produce grown here that moves out all over the country....strawberries, brocolli, asparagus, walnuts, almonds, you name it.....and the whole state of California shares the joy and grief of the storage auction business.

Here's our latest entry:
recordnet.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20130728/A_NEWS/307280312&cid=sitesearch

The auctioneer, Joe Ward, is the most respected of any of the auctioneers in central California.

Flea Markets / How is hot weather affecting your flea market sales ?
« on: July 30, 2013, 12:24:19 AM »
Talked to a couple of other sellers the other day and we all agreed that spring and fall are the logical best times to sell due to moderate temps, etc, but that doesn't stop us throughout the year.

In the central valley of California this week is COOL with highs only about 90 or so the last couple of weekends.
It's also not humid here so that helps too.

How about your area ?  Any special summer concerns or trends due to weather?

Flea Markets / Can Adult Material Be Sold At Your Local Flea Market ?
« on: July 30, 2013, 12:20:56 AM »
In my area there are 4 flea markets within 15 miles of each other and only one seems to be a place where adult material is sold in any quantity.

That is to say, there is one vendor who puts up a canopy, encloses it on three sides (not the back) and apparently has a lot of porn inside.

Considering how much porn is available on the internet (SO I'VE BEEN TOLD) I guess the buyers are those folks who don't have a computer or the internet but do have a DVD player.

Your area?

Folks, It's just NOT going to ever get back to the days of making 4-10 times or more your money on most units.

My best year was 2.68 times the money. Last year was 1.59 times the money. The first 7 months of 2013 I am sitting at 2.23 times the money....and that's from buying 2 lockers in 7 months with the rest from PICKING !

I think Craig's didn't much like messing with big units, and I remember him more then once saying he would let the regulars with stores win the units they wanted, so maybe he just lost interest.

I think I remember Money saying they live to far in the boonies to have effective yard sales. Likely lost interest, along with family issues, in auctions as well.

Have they been lurking, or totally off the radar?

Craig last post April 30, 2013….last visit was May 30, 2013

Money last post March 29, 2013…last visit was June 18, 2013

Maybe they eloped !

Maybe they got tired of being tracked - LOL!

Just Kidding - .....

Most likely are the following (though there are many other reasons):

1) Lost job.

2) Lost loved one (death/separation/divorce).

3) Lost life.

4) Lost interest in storage auctions or in talking about them on a forum.

I think number 4 is the most common.

I've always run on the assumption that on SW they buy and sell things in "California Dollars" which apparently are a completely different currency than the rest of us uses.

Yes, a California dollar is like a Mexican Minute....they're both larger than the normal.

Craigslist / Re: Providing Dimensions
« on: July 28, 2013, 09:22:14 AM »
For both eBay and cList I put a yardstick with large numbers with the item whether a bread-box size or larger and take a broad shot and then a close-up clearly showing the dimension. Depending on the piece I might do this with each of the dimensions.

I also put the dimensions in as text, but you can still count on someone asking what the size is or asking "Do you think I can get this in the trunk of my 'xyz' car?"

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Barbies in Storage Lockers
« on: July 28, 2013, 08:45:30 AM »
Just curious about this statement. Most barbies I've found and looked up on ebay never sold or werent worth the trouble/shipping hassle for $20 bucks. I pop them off in my yardsale for $5-10 depending on the condition/theme. Is this defined as doing well?

The Barbies I have sold in the past at the flea market have sold for $15 to $30 and were the kind that were new in the box (the kind of boxes that are oddly shaped and have the cellophane panel).  Otherwise, loose barbies that have been well played with....if I get 10 of them in a locker I just put them out at the flea and ask $2 each.  I haven't taken the trouble to look up their heritage. If someone gets one worth more than $2...they're welcome to it.

Did no good at a piece-by-piece auction on Thursday, July 25, 2013 but I did make a good buy at another auction of that type.

I bought a 4x4x4 container (open on the top) of miscellaneous items. I saw one item I was interested in…the rest was mystery items and they were not visible. The whole box cost $10.

The place provides a dumpster and I was filling it up pretty quickly. I got about 12 total items I thought were sellable.  One in particulare (buried in the middle of the box) came out well.

It was a plastic ziplock type bag about 9 x 12 with visible USA postage stamps (new) showing. Bag was thick too, so if the rest were like that I knew there would be some value there.

Got it home, spent maybe an hour sorting by denomination. Most pieces were 3s, 4s or 8s of a single stamp, but there were a fair number of singles too. Anyway, after putting the quantities and denominations into a spreadsheet the total came out to $130 and some cents!  Not bad for the $10 investment, plus the other items to sell too....and a lot of junk thrown away.

I have a friend who mails to Canada on a regular basis (they need postage with numbers on them, not “forever” stamps) so I may discount some of that to her, but still $100 plus is ok with me.

UGH!!!   .....  Prices are just to crazy right now.

I ditto the ugh but not because of prices......north of you and then inland the prices aren't so bad right now, but the contents aren't that great.

Used to be if you looked at 40 lockers in a day you would see at least one really good one, lots of average and a few trash units.  Of late there have been more trash units, definitingly more less than average and NO good ones.

I went to half a dozen auctions yesterday and did't bid on a single locker. Prices were ok with lockers going for $75 to $500. The $500 was a pretty full 10 x 25 but a LOT of big stuff, and when I see multiple sets of washers/dryers and refrigerators I get a bit suspcious and not a enough boxes of smalls to really get excited about.

So, the search continues.

What's with all the secrecy anyway?

You have the edit and/or DELETE button....I have the WITH-HOLD button !

What would you do with the information anyway?  Alias has provided it for you.  Have at it !
