Craigslist / Re: Bring change
« on: October 07, 2012, 12:46:29 PM »
I like the 'city thing'.  Have to give that a try.

Been slow here too.  Most of my items are hard sells.  Totally 'want' items, nothing people 'need' or even FEEL they need.   Specialty tools and kitchen gadgets mostly.

Tho, did figure out why I didn't get a single bite on anything last week.
Use the CL App on iPad and somehow it got stuck on 'Dallas' and posted all my listing down there.

I didn't even use the App in Dallas and the LocationServices is turned off.  I had LocationServices turned on in OKC but turned it off when I got on train to Dallas.   No clue how all that happened.

Movieman, have you used the CL App yet and if so which one?   The LifeLike App has so many bugs it drives me crazy.......

They are Craigslist buyers.  They don't listen.

Thats like specifying in Ad that you CAN NOT meet on weekend.   Sure to have every reply say they will meet you on Saturday.

I think if I said bring exact change, instead they would show up with a deer hoof and a can of soup for barter........    ;D

Picker's Paradise / Re: Yard Sale Picking Has Been Good
« on: October 07, 2012, 11:57:47 AM »
I've yet to find anything this year at garage sales for resale.

Found some good deals for personal use.  New-like Fluke tool bag for $5 that retails for $60 could sell but I needed....well, wanted it.

And I'm good on locks now.  Got a coffee can full (with keys) for $10.   Have sold a few of those at $5/ea at auctions.

People just price stuff like its gold and most of the time I'm not in the mood to haggle........

Craigslist / Bring change
« on: October 07, 2012, 11:43:20 AM »
The old Craigslist buyer scam of only bringing $40 for $50-$60 item seems to have changed.

Now I'm running into guys that show up for a $60 item but bring a $100 bill and two $20's.  Guess they seem to think that way it doesn't look like thy are trying to short you.....?

For safety I never bring much but I'm making sure I have change.
This morning I sold an item for $20 and guy only had a $50 and a $10.  Didn't even ask if I could break the $50, just tried to hand me the $10.

What's messed up with guys trying to strong arm me on price is if a peron is cool, friendly, professional.....9 out of 10 times if they examine it and say its really not worth x-amount to them, will I take <lesser>x-amount.....I usually will.   No need to hustle me.   Some items I can't, mark up is just to small.  But most I add in a little room for haggling.

This mornings item I got for $1 just yesterday.  Totally would have taken $10.  I really didn't expect a call when I priced t $20.  But try to hustle me?  Nope.  Got change.  Enjoy.  See ya.

Really thinking of getting Sqaure so I can take debit/credit.

Yeah, I got a bunch. Different sizes and shapes. Last week got a huge one. Opening is 3"x3".  Cheese grater.  I'll try and get you a picture....

I've never actually used them to grind meat but I do make my own nut butter. Finally found that attachment at a garage sale.  Peanut, almond, pine nut.....

Also to crush tomatoes for gravy.  Chick pea's for hummus.

Pretty handy little device even in this age of electronic gadgets.

What's it Worth?? / Bottle of wine price
« on: October 05, 2012, 06:36:31 PM »
Hit an estate with a real wine cellar.  $2/bottle.
Mostly stuff I knew.  Generic. But for $2 grabbed some unknowns.  Xmas is not far off, ya know?

Found all but one online. Sick of searching.

Anyone know anything about  1977 Twin Oaks Zinfandel?   :-\

The Treasure Chest / Finally got what I was looking for!
« on: October 04, 2012, 08:56:23 PM »
Got a unit yesterday for $20.    Only contents was a liquor box, a back pack and a broken shoe shine box.

Really just bid since it was a decent looking NorthFace pack.  Probably $50 new.  Nothing special but I could use it.....

Pack was full of crappy hiking stuff.  Got maybe $20-$30 of day hike gear.  Nice little stove but tips over. 90% went in trash.

Shoe shine box got trashed along with 90% of its contents too.

Box?  Another 90 percenter.  BUT.....<back story> I use to do well selling those old hand crank meat grinders.  People would pay $25 for them and I'd get them at estates for $1-$5.   Then the estates got wise and started charging like $10/ea.   and other started selling.....now they are all over Craigslist .....anyway, I've always wanted the 'salesman sample' meat grinder.   You know, mini version he would go door-to-door selling.

So in the box.   Got it!   No idea why I want it.  Just kitchen decoration but with the other stuff this makes a good $20 spend.

This is not mine.  Just a random eBay link to show what I'm talking about:

Welcome to the Online Storage Auctions Forum / Re: hello!

How many times do I have to answer this?

East Coast has the best auctions. No question.

West coast is bad.  More specific is the PNW.  Horrible.  Don't go.   ;D

I just follow two auctioneers right now.  I like their style.  Down side is I only hit auctions in a 15 mile radius of home.  Means with their circuit I only have auctions every other month.  Tho I do go downtown and hit the mini-storage.  Small units that are expensive as.....
People tend not to store junk in a 3x3 that's $75/month.

So to answer you question......

I choose them by having gone to a ton and learning which locations have the best odds, are easy to deal with and hire professional auctioneers.

That said, maybe you shouldn't listen to me since I've really not done well this year.  Made some money, yet to lose on a unit but really.....ive only won a handful and nothing to write home about.  I go to auctions if I'm not doing anything else and bord.  I concentrate on picking.

I'm back!  Miss me?   ;D

Been a long month.  Nothing much to report tho....

The auctions finally made the way back to my hunting grounds and were pretty good.   Lower attendance and lower prices.  But....I spent to much last month and most bidding was still a bit above my comfort zone.

Picking hasn't been to good. Doing okay but lot more work.   The great weather gets more people out to estate sales......
Lot of smalls with $5-$10 mark up.

Anyway....time to browse thru forum and see wht I've missed.

Hey peeps!
Thought I'd pop in and say hey.

I got nothing to add though.   NOLA trip was cancelled. Damn hurricane.
There's been very few auctions in my area and none on day's I have free.  Plus the truck I had access to has been sent up to the Alaska for the winter so back to concentrating on smaller lockers....

Seems the auction scene around her took a dramatic shift.   Last ones I've been to there is way less people but way more actual bidders.  prices are about the same.   Bid on ski locker, 3x5,  lots of out door gear, 20 old ass ski's, boots.....there were 17 people there and eight bid on it.  Went for $625!

Still been (trying to) pick estate sales but nothing special to report.  Have a shelving unit full of items for sale and no takers.   Seems like every sale I hit its all the same items.  And the estate sale prices are going up and up!

Anyway, my travel plans changed a bit so I'll have time to do some picking while down south.   That is, if I ever go outside.  The heat + humidity just sucks the life outa me!

Good luck Alias and take it easy.  Also, here's a food tip.  When you're in OKC - if you have time - be sure to stop by BIG ED'S - they had the BEST burgers I've ever eaten.

I'm taking train up from Dallas.  Expedition gets 11mpg, couple hundred in gas vs Rail Pass= Free.   Big Eds looks to be 10miles from my hotel so......

But my little brother is stationed there so if he can get out of duty long enough maybe he'll drive me around.

I've been outa action for a bit too.....and might not be around much in the next few weeks.

So much to do trying to get back to work!   Doctor appointments everyday last week!   X-rays, MRI, blood test, cardiograms......still need some more crap done.   All that and government red tape to deal with.
I swear, they expect you to drop everything and get things done that day but then you don't hear back from them for two weeks!

So between all this medical stuff to get write offs on and I have a wedding in NOLA, meetings in Yakima, WA and Oklahoma City, family stuff in Dallas plus two day trips to LA and SF (get off plane, meet up with people, rush back to catch plane that night).  Coming up, in a two week period I'll be home 2 non-consecutive days and neither is a full 24 hours....auctions, estates and finding time to sell has been put on back burner.

Spam.   And wrong.   I never bring a truck.
Gas economy car to do all he driving between multiple auctions.  Then return with gas guzzling truck if I win.
