When I had a ton of DVDs to sell, maybe 3-4 years ago, I was selling them for $3 ea. 4 for $10. Went to the flea market this past weekend and a guy was selling milk crates full of DVDs, $2 ea. Buy 4 get 1 free.

Funny about the furniture. It's opposite for me, the larger the piece, the longer it hangs around. Small pieces sell faster. Might be a difference in our price structure.

Could be a difference in price structure. I price to sell fast. Plus I have an advantage of having Duke, UNC, NC State and NCCU within 30 miles and ECU about 50 miles away. Plus about 10 other smaller colleges (Shaw University, Merideth College, etc.) close by. College students always need furniture!

That's a good return ! (11 sales in a week.)  Very good!

To have "gotten" $20/$10 for a monkey doll ?  Outstanding !

Catch phrase.....Cassowary...who'd have thunk that one up !  ;)

I see someone is stalking my craigslist ads. That monkey doll is a Gund and is collected by many. That's one holdover from that unit I picked up. Tonight I dropped it to $8. Chances are, it'll go into my kid's mound of stuffed animals. But if someone wants to pay me for it, who am I to stop them?

I have to punch them out.

That's one hell of a way to show your appreciation for business!  :D

The locker that I use mostly is at a very large facility. My building is FF, after already going through A-Z if that gives you any indication. Needless to day, I'm way in the back! Today I was going to meet a guy who was picking up bags of cement mix. I stopped in the office, chatted them up a bit and decided to move the meet location up the road at the bowling alley. They are real policy followers in there.. I think because they've just been taken over by new management.

Most often phone numbers are stolen from craigslist and added to autodialers for telemarketing. I'd much rather send some spam to my spam filter than have to deal with telemarketers. Around here we don't have much of those issues I suppose.

Yeah, my return was really good this week. But I'm learning quickly that if you have collectibles, antiques, or vintage stuff, craigslist is not the best venue for selling. Haven't gotten a single hit on my erector sets, barbie case, or my desk chair..

I also price to sell. I have a dining room table on craigslist for $75. I think it's the cheapest up there..

BTW.. Just realized my numbers are a bit skewed.. For example, I posted an ad for a vintage guitar shell, which I ended up selling to a guitar shop. So, my sales through craigslist exclusively was 9 for last week.

I also made 2 sales today off the unit I bought yesterday... through craigslist.

Today I had made an appointment to meet up with a guy for some bags of cement. He called me up with car problems. UGH!! Not a big sale, just $20, but 7 50 lb. bags of cement is no fun to move in and out of your van multiple times a day! He ended up coming back about an hour ago.

Question about meeting at your storage unit.. How do you work out the gate access? Do you meet them out front and squeeze 2 vehicles through the gate? Do you pack your vehicle with your product and bring it out front?

I've been meeting people at a bowling alley a half mile up the road from my storage unit. I don't want to rub management the wrong way..

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #3...March, 2013

Yesterday I bought a house unit for $30.. It was the only unit for sale at that facility. The other 3 bidders were auction regulars. The locker had an armoire, 2 recliners, one went in the trash, an elliptical machine without power source, a lamp and 2 portable closets, new in box. Not a HUGE money maker, but I expect to make $200.. Not bad for a half day's work!

It seems that those with the tax return money are going to the most obvious resources to look for available auctions.

If you know how to find auctions other than doing a Google search, there are still good values out there even around tax time!

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Using Facebook to sell. Works great!

I belong to one of those "yard sale" groups. I've posted quite a few items with no sales yet. I think it's just what I'm selling.. Nothing to pique the interest of the members of that group..

Last Tuesday I bought a locker. I put up 14 ads on Craigslist. Today I had 3 left. I don't leave my phone number on the ad. I say to respond with whatever catch phrase in the subject line. If I don't see that catch phrase in the subject line, I don't respond with my phone number.

The question in the email is usually "Is it still available?" I respond with "Yes it is! Please call me at (my number) so that I can answer any questions you might have or to set up a time to come out and take a look at the (product)."

I've never put my number in the Craigslist ad, so I can't say if it's better to put your number in there or not. If I did, I would definitely code it like this.. nine1nine six22 nine78two. Again to weed out spammers.. But maybe I'm paranoid!

Around here, toys sell real fast. Larger furniture items (sofa, dressers, dining room tables, etc.) sell well. Small furniture, I tend to sit on for a while. Sporting goods is another category that flies out the door as soon as I get it! In the last unit I bought, I snapped a pic of a men's bike, threw it up on craigslist with minimal text and someone met me at the unit 40 minutes later.

Also check with storage facilities on their parking rates. CubeSmart around here just offered me a parking spot for $65 a month!

You put your phone number on CL? That's a bold move!

Well, at least you tried. If you hadn't you would never had known if it would have worked or not.

The product I'm thinking about has six people doing it on Etsy and a similar number on eBay, so I have SOME hope, but if it doesn't work, it works locally anyway.

Since your competition is low, you should do well, providing someone is searching for your product on etsy or ebay. I think that's a big reason why it doesn't work for me, too much competition.

Hey George! I'm Jim. I'm from the Raleigh area. Good to see another NC'ian on the boards! Whereabouts in WNC?

I'm wondering if people who were looking for wedding favors, etc wouldn't look more locally for that kind of item so they would have more "control".

There is an amazing assortment of wedding favors, wedding announcements, birth announcements, etc. on etsy. I thought I could develop a couple of designs for etsy that would sell well. But no.. Not a single sale. I even put up a "design your own" option for birth announcements, save the date magnets, etc. Nothing..
