The Treasure Chest / Re: Old Book and Gold Coins

Heck - you got more for your money then the $875 I paid for mine.  Keep up the good work and you will do well.  Just hope you didn't use up all your luck the first time out.

Most of the regulars in my area have been doing this for 5-20 years depending on which person you are talking with.  The majority of them are retired.  I was lucky as while not welcoming new people with open arms, the regulars didn't shun us either.  They just try and make it clear the TV shows and the reality are two very different things.  Now that I've been doing this for 6 months everyone treats me as an equal.  A few facilities even count me as a "regular / good customer that they rely on".

In a way except for a few locations the crowds in my area are calm.  Mostly a dozen bidders or so.  It's the advertised caravans and saturday auctions that draw 50 - 100 people.  Of course it's still the same dozen of us bidding / buying the units most of the time.

Garage Sales / Re: This is how we made money with Garage Sales.

Well some of those 9 month old threads are great.  May save a noobie from asking the same question that has already been answered a dozen times already.

Flea Markets / Re: Black Friday Results??
« on: December 03, 2011, 05:58:39 PM »
Well the flea is only open to rent booths on Friday.  However, I did talk to one of the vendors I chat with when at the flea.  She said Saturday was a great day for her, cleared $200+ with lots of traffic.  Said Sunday was a complete bust - only $30 that day.

So I may have to try next year.

Now the question is "Christmas Eve" ya or nay.  Guy that setup next to me again this week said it's a good time normally with the last min shoppers.  Flea will be open only from 7 to 12 instead of 4.  So if it's still the same fee I just don't know if I'll bother.

Flea Markets / Re: Flea Market Revenue ?
« on: December 03, 2011, 05:54:48 PM »
Well today was my best day yet at the flea.  After expenses I made $117.75.  Still no furniture selling.  Think I'll just put it up for the winter and try in Late Feb / March when I've been told people buy furniture.  If the weather is nice I'll prob do another stab next Saturday.

One thing I think I'll change is make more "rummage boxes".  I have a $.25 small tote that people seem to like searching.  Same for the box of hot wheels and other cars I have for $.50.  So think I'll get a few totes or boxes and do $.25, $.50, and $1 items for people to look in.  Will make loading/unloading a little bit easier.

Sold mostly odds and ends today.  One stuff animal, and one book sold today.  So I'm going to say screw it and donate all the books to Goodwill.  Already donated most of the stuff animals so I'm still tossing the idea around to donate the care bears, and disney stuff animals or not.

Did get rid of more xmas and GA bulldog stuff.  Helped that GA was playing LSU today at 4.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Finding Storage Auctions In Local Newspapers
« on: December 02, 2011, 09:00:08 PM »
To give you MovieMan's answer --- USE THE SEARCH FEATURE.

For my answer --- look at the title of this thread.  Your first and best resource is your local newspapers and those papers around you.  Out to how ever far you want to drive.

You will not find an auction now a days with just you and 2 other people.  If you do - also play the lottery that day as you just hit the jackpot.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Scrap metal - is it worth it?
« on: December 01, 2011, 09:25:31 PM »
Wayne - don't worry - I wasn't about to just take the fridge home and release the freon.  I just hadn't thought about it before took the fridge...don't ask me why I hadn't.  Have a few relatives that do HVAC work so they have the equipment for next time.

I have 4 yards in my area, maybe 6 if travel a little further.  However, only 2 pay well.  The other 4 will take a few extra things but the price difference is pretty large.  Tin and other scrap ferrous metal I'm working to take in as I get a load.  The non-ferrous is what I'm storing up on.  Not going to bother with a load till I have close to 100+ lbs to make it worth it.  Wire doesn't take up much room stripped or unstripped.  I have plenty of walmart shelving and old paint/food buckets to store it in by type.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Lookey Loos Part 11.....November, 2011

I'm thankful we have not had any newspaper or news coverage in a good bit.  The last coverage was some time last year when a body was found in one of the storage units.  It wasn't even an auction - was a raid by police on the suspects unit of a missing person or such.

Starting to turn cold even down here in the south.  Hope that keeps some people at home but highly doubt it.

I'll be honest and say up front it was the dang tv show.  Father and I have always done auctions.  Mostly estate, equipment, and company (Walmart, etc) auctions.  Anyways - most of the auctions had dried up, I was tired of playing WoW, and turned on the TV for first time in weeks.  Wife had left the set on A&E and Auction Hunters was on.  Thought it looked like BS to me but it did get me to wondering if they had the auctions in my area.  A few internet searches later I found a few listings, this site, and a few other things.  Started back in June and been going ever since.  I think about 6 of us started in June.  Only two of us are still doing it.

Is funny as while chatting up the lady that runs one of the facilities she was like - "I count on you and the other 6 regulars".  Talking about bidding and cleaning out units.

No auctions today for me.  All my auctions are mostly between the 5th - 13th.  Did spend a few hours chatting up 2 different facility managers.  Found out my 3 caravan silent auction is switching to a live auction in January.  If it wasn't for my daughter I'd prob not bother to attend.  Is a saturday auction with 60+ people last month and 100+ people last saturday.  Will hate to see what happens come January, but I'll be there.

Did find out 1 unit currently behind has a vehicle in it, and another person has 3 units 39 days behind.  This person has the units for his mother who is an interior decorator.  No name - but I'll be keep my eye open come January for pair / 3 units with same name.

I like example #2 Movieman.  Do like the general topic thread since we do that alot anyways.

Lol Cobia - your bad month was Sept and mine was this month.  You win some and you loose some.

As for the Regulars it's still pretty steady around here.  I only know of one regular that I saw a ton in July/Sept that I've not seen in Oct / Nov.  Don't know if he has moved on, health issues, or what.  Of course outside of the 1 thrift store guy, most of the other regulars are retired guys that do this to stay busy.  When I think about it the breakdown in my area is interesting.

1 - Regular Thirft Store Guy -- hits just about every auction except weekends.
2-5 - older "retired" regulars.  One hits most auctions, the others have certain stomping grounds I always see them at.
2 - older newbie-regulars -- myself and another guy & his wife + his son or friend - not sure which young guy.
2-4 - older newbies that only hit specific auctions.  Don't know if it's the facility they like or day/time.
3 - newer newbies that have still showed up after 2 months.

Then depending on the facility and how well advertised 3 - 80+ newbies and looky-loos.

Next week will be interesting.  Have the 3 facility auction that use to be a dozen of us.  Was close to 30 last month.  Also, have the 7 facility auction that will start out with 12 - 20 people and by time 1/2 way done be around 40-60 if trends stay the same.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Scrap metal - is it worth it?
« on: November 30, 2011, 03:11:41 PM »
For me the answer is yes and no.  I keep most things metal and break them down to a point depending on what it is.  Like this forum - I read 2 other "scrap metal" forums pretty regular.  I have 4 scrap yards near me and have started to check each of them out.  Today was my first load of stuff to a scrap yard.

I turned in a washer, dryer, old AC blower, and some odds and ends.  Had 600 lbs of stuff on my trailer at 12.75/cwt or .1275 lb that came out to be $76.50.  So that is another $76 I can add to my seed money.  Had a fridge on the truck also that they wouldn't take as the freon wasn't released yet or something.  Gave it to another scrapper that said the place right around the corner would take it.  He'll make $10 or so and I got it off my trailer so I could get to work.

Anyways - it doesn't take but 10 seconds to snip the cords off of everything you are trashing.  Find a bucket or tote and just start tossing them in there.  When it's full you can turn it in for some extra $$$.

It all depends on your time, space available to you, and effort you want to put into it.  The van seats that I got in one unit while heavy I just tossed in the trash also.  Didn't want to spend an hour cutting the foam and crap off.  The bed frame, headboard, etc. that is metal and can't sell goes on the scrap heap.

Like Jedi, some of the units I buy are purchased more for the "scrap metal" content I see then for the re-sale.

Check with your local yards to see what they will take.  Many don't take capacitors, e-scrap, and the like.  Others will take just about anything.  The more you seperate stuff the better you come out on non-ferrous stuff.  Stripping wires pays more then non-strip but sometimes the difference in price is so small as to not make it worth the time and effort.

Even if you don't scrap it's a good idea to keep up with prices on copper, brass, etc.  I'm sure you are already keeping up with gold and silver.  That set of cast iron pots you were going to sell for $10 may be worth $20 in scrap.  So you can at least get $15 for example from a buyer at the flea.  Junk pots and pans that you can't sell - scrap them as stainless steel.  That busted washer or dryer - worth a few bucks in scrap.  Set of bass door knockers - sell for near scrap at a flea.  You get the idea.

824
It all just depends on the units you see and the number of people there.  I learned yesterday that the unit from Sat that I really liked (5x10 or so) filled with totes and boxes must of sold for over $350.  I like mystery but didn't see anything close to $300+.

While yesterday I scored 2 units for $15.  $10 for a closet size unit with a yamaha keyboard and odds / ends.  $5 for a closet size unit with just a mini-dorm fridge in it.  Fridge powered up so will check this morning that it's cold.  If so that was an easy profit.

Warrants, drugs and porn have seemed to be the norm -- yep Rockin it pretty much is.  I have to say those are normally my better units also since they normally have electronics / games / game systems also in them for me.

As for needles and such I wear gloves and am always on the lookout for crap like that.

Since my girls like to "dig" with me I'm hypersensative to what is in a unit.  I mostly search all boxes, totes, and stuff before I let my helpers even look inside.
