Got back and had some 18yo girl hit me in my car so been busy getting back into the swing of things, getting all the insurance bs sorted out, etc.

Just started updating the site again and been meaning to visit the forum and get back into things.

We'll be chatting with you guys more regularly.

Craigslist / Re: Pirated photos?

personally i would recommend putting an email address over your pic instead of a trademark type logo like a symbol.

a symbold doesn't really mean anything if i sent you a pic that doesnt mean its my pic or my item however if your selling me a car and you send me a pic with watermarked [email protected] and your email address is [email protected] I'm going to wonder about that.

watermarks are super easy to do in picassa. just click the text option and write your email adress in the middle of the pic then chang the font color or style to clear so it doesn't obstruct the pic and you got a watermark.

eBay / Re: Anyone Burned on Fee Bay ?

Drunk, love that story, good to hear the shady buyers getting the short end of the stick once in a while.

Apparently not a lot of people believe in "I wouldn't want someone to do that to me so I won't do that to others" philosophy b/c like in  your situation people just don't seem to give a **** if they inconveneince others, cost others money, etc.

Buyers want a 100% honest and upfront deal and they want to get what they paid for and they want professionism but then at the same time they bid on things and think it's fine to try to renegotiate the deal after the fact or just back out.

you basically have to have the attitude or knowledge anything you sell may wind up being gone with the money so i dont sell high dllar items. i sold some bose invisible speakers a while back for $250 and i was biting my naisl for  the next 45 days. also for pickup items its cash or no deal if the deal falls through so be it as if a buyer wants to be a jerk they will automatically get money back and keep your item. if i were going to do a local pickup id drop the item off at the persons house, hopefully you wont try to get over on my if i know where  you live but then again people are stupid

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Needing a loan

You also could potentially start taking on consignment items which is essentialy 100% profit for you with the exception of your time.

You do open up more possibilities to earn money but like others have said you now have more expenses. Have to charge taxes and keep records which costs money and time. You have to have commercial insurance most likely, pay rent at a store, etc. So even though you open up more possibilities you also bring on many more expenses.

I too have dreamed of opening a resale shop or pawn shop but its a big commitment and its hard to compete with a guy selling stuff out of his garage who does'nt have the expenses that you do.

Hey guys been gone for a while, was down in Jamaica for a few weeks, got back and starting a business with a buddy, had a car accident, etc so havn't posted in a while.

Anyhow, I would be shocked if your able to get a loan. It's tough for even an established business to get a loan right now so you with this type of business which isn't exactly the traditional business I would think will have an even harder time.

I think your better off going to friends, family, or taking on an investor or two as opposed to trying to go to a bank. Also the amount of money isn't huge so even if you lost everything over time you could pay someone back 6k, its not like your trying to get a few hundred k to buy a franchise or something like that.

I think there's pro's and cons. Just having a store generally means people expect to pay a little more than they will on cl, I know I do, I understand a brick and mortar store has more expenses than a guy selling on cl but its a store also has hours that are easy i dont have to try to work out a pickup time with a guy plus you want to keep a good rep so will hopefully sell quality stuff.

I really wouldn't be too conerned about it. As others have said its not like they have hackd your account they just copy and reuse your pic from the posting. Plus there's not much you cna do about it. Even protected pictures can be saved with a pretty easy step.

One thing thats easy to do is put a watermark with your email address or website name over the pic. Not going to stop someone from using it buy buyers may wonder why that persons email doesn't match the pic

I've been absent from the boards for a little while, took a vacation and been busy with some other things.

Not sure why but I always google "storageauctionforums"  and this site used to pop up first every time. Not sure why I do that instead of just typing it into the address bar I suppose out of habit. ANyhow, I noticed your now the 6th or 7th thing down and I have to scroll down.

Storagrauctionboards is first, then auction zip then a storageautin ebook self storage auction talk and then a storage auction disccussion on topix.

Just figured I'd let you know

The Lounge / Anyone come across any Iraqi Dinar in units?
« on: June 16, 2011, 08:39:07 PM »
Just curious if anyone has come across any Iraqi Dinar in units. You tend to find a lot of coins and fx currency so woudln't surprise me that finding a few million dinar woudln't be that uncommong.

Curious ifanyone found any and if so if you kept it as a long shot investment or just sold it on ebay?

Stores / Re: No way out, a store is needed.
« on: June 16, 2011, 11:54:46 AM »
Sounds very cool Mr. A. Look forward to seeing this developing. I have had similar ideas would like to have a storage facility, resale shop, maybe even an auction house. Use the space as storage, to sort property, etc. There's nothing like that in my area either and I can see people enjoying an auctionhouse. Problem is in Chicago or even surrounding burbs land is just to expensive to justify a business like that.

Stores / Re: Booth space versus full store - I bit the bullet
« on: June 12, 2011, 04:52:17 PM »
Nice work ironman. We can get booths at my place but not only do you have to be there to make sales but if your not there so many days per week or month you can no longer have your setup there.

I'll have to try to find someplace like what you mention. If you don't mind me asking how is it setup. How do you get credit for your items sold, do they provide you with a tag on which you price things and put your space number or how does that work?

Do they take a small cut if they sell it for you? If not what's the incentive for you to show up ever as opposed to just letting them sell your stuff for you?

I'll put a link below to the page on the home depot site about it. You can put in your zip and it will tell the closest location to you that does it.

http://homedepotrents.com/truckrental.asp?cm_sp=tool_rental-_-visual_nav-_-truck_rental

They don't really advertise it and they keep the trucks around back so it's possible they do it at your local home depot and you don't even know about it if you've never inquired about it.

Many if not most locations in my area have it. I guess it's first 75 minutes for $19. If you got your unit organized and have a buddy to help I would think you should be able to load and unload two truckloads in that time, most likely clean out a unit and it only cost you $19 plus gas.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Cable Boxes
« on: June 11, 2011, 05:45:46 PM »
I can't count how many cable boxes I've tossed. I've looked into it a little and havn't found an outlet for them. Cable comapnies don't want tehm back and they are really no good as I think they are programed to a certain account. .

The only option I can think of is if you have a recycling/scrap metal place in your area. Oftentimes they buy old computers and stuff. Maybe they buy cable boxes to recycle the components as well not sure.

For trucks go to Home Depot instead of Uhaul. It's $24 for I believe 3 hours no additional mileage charges just gotta return it with a full tank. They have cargo vans or F250's with high sides, cant beat that deal, no 0.99 cents a mile or any of that garbage.

Home Depot is also super quick to get in and out of you rent them in the tool rental area. I was out in 2 min. I don't think I've ever rentd a uhaul truck or trailer and had it take less than 30 or 40 min.

Those box trucks sound like a decent deal however why drop 7k before you even know you want to do this ft/ theres money to be made, etc. Test the waters before investing 7k in a truck. Also do you have a place to store a box truck?

My one other point and this is huge aas I've helped my cousin do cleanouts property preservation, etc. If you got a ton of two of garbage and a dump truck takes a whole 2 min to empty it. If you have a box truck expect to pay 2-3 guys for a couple hours to empty out that truck.

My thought was if someone bought it they are buying it for the rss followers/subscribers and traffic, not for my blogger setup.

Lets be honest anyone cna set up a blogger blog in about a minute and a half.

The site has only been up for about 2 months maybe 3 at the most, already have a pretty good search engine ranking, have somewhere between 100 and 130 subscribers to rss feeds, have a lot of backlinks to the site created, have done some advertising on other sites, already have some advertisers currently and have a pretty searc engine friendly domain as well.

I totally agree with all your comments. What I think I have to offer is not really the blogger site so much as the other things I mentioned. I was thinking if somene totally new to web design and stuff bought it thwy may continue with the current setup but thought more likely someone like you who alreay has a site may buy it and use it to put out some teaser auctions and redirect people to your other sites.

TC, thanks for the tips as well as the compliments, no offense taken you make very good points.

When I started the site I didn't realize I'd get such a following so quickly, I have anther site way older that doesn't even compare must have lucked out with a good domain name and niche topic area.

I just did a quick google blogger setup. I wasn't trying to be too fancy, I kinda had sites like Drudge Report and Craigslist in mind with the whole simpler is better concept for it so in that sense I wasn't trying to be too fancy.

I do agree with you to take it to the next level would need an overhaul. Because of the way blogger posts update and the way blogger works there's really no rhyme or reason to how auctions are posted. I have categories for all 50 states but within a state they are listed just by most recent post not alphabetically, regionally or even by date.

I suppose I could gather all my info and post a whole month at a time to knock down the clutter and make things more organized but this is a site I work on when I have time and havn't devoted the necessary time to really make it the most functional it can be. It's free info though so beggars cant be choosers you know.

I totally agree with a redesign though.
