Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #6...June, 2013
« on: June 22, 2013, 08:52:27 AM »
Went to some more auctions....three.  Decent crowd, semi-decent lockers. Nothing jumped out at me as being exciting. I bid on a 5 x 5 that I would have been happy with for $100 (in my area). I went to $125 comfortably but then took a 3 month newbie up and let him have it at $180. It was clean and full, but after $125 I wasn't interested.

One 10 x 30 looked good with a big (wheeled) gizmo at the back that we figured out was a concrete pump! I thought it probably sold new for $8,000 or so and that getting $3K for it wouldn't be too hard (if it worked). There were also several good looking sets of golf clubs, some opened suitcases, a 40" or so flatscreen, a 7' tall, four wall dog kennel about 6' square or so. Overall, some definite possibilities for profit.

Started out slow enough, $100 or so but then two guys (both friends of mine) took it up to $600 pretty fast. I was holding back as the concrete thing was out of my area, but both of these guys handle equipment so why not let them have it.  Friend #1 got it for the $600.....was wondering why friend #2 was "bidding him up", but I told him that he wasn't, he just wanted it. Hard to take logic into account when in the heat of the bidding. We all bid up newbies and "hogs" who want them all. Our bidding up generally only goes as high as we would be willing to pay, but in some cases we "zing" the other guy to teach him a lesson or deplete his funds for the rest of the day.

Anyway, as others are headed to the office, we go into the locker (yeah, I know, it's a no-no, but oh, well).  Got a good look at the main goodies and locked it up.  Get to office...THERE'S A PROBLEM !

The legal  ad was 3 days short of being legal...had to cancel the sale!  After the big disappointment the two of us talked...Friend #2 had left in a huff since he didn't get it (and didn't get that it is BUSINESS, not friendship). We decided the three of us might COLLUDE to keep the price down next time around and buy it all together and split the proceeds...that's if no other buyers get involved....if they do, it's anyone's ball game.

Yes, we know, COLLUSION is a bad thing, an illegal thing even, but so is going more than the speed limit, not feeding a parking meter, etc.  No one is being robbed at gunpoint and no one is getting beaten with a club. Ever cheat on your tax return or SPEED just to keep THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC going?   ;D

Went to several auctions yesteray (June 19, 2013) and crowds were decent with newbies outnumbering regulars about 2 to 1. Each group won some lockers.

Locker counts typically about 5 per location with maybe 3 of those being junk and the other two good enough to go in the $300 range.

Saw Leota and her husband at a couple of them. They were smiling at the prices a couple of the lockers sold for....smiling in disbelief.  ;D

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Salvation Army...A Large Facility
« on: June 20, 2013, 09:14:14 AM »
Here's a shot of folks going through blue totes under four large (car sized) canopies. Anyone who has bought a
storage locker knows this can be a good or bad thing. At SA you can bet they've already gone through them and have put the goodies in the Sallies Attic store.

The picture below shows maybe 200 feet of furniture under cover (for the most part). I was surprised to see
it was ALL particle board. I also didn't see any solid wood furniture (in any quantity) in several of the actual buildings. Don't know what they do with it (or if it gets sold quickly) but it wasn't there.

Will post last two pics tomorrow of couches, etc in yet another area.

The pictures above were taken from a parking lot pretty much on level with the big living quarters shown in pic one in post one above.
Facing 180 degrees away from the selling area shown above, the next two pics show a LARGE clothing barn, and even a place to eat.

I only poked my head in the door, but the clothing area shown above had to be 2,000 square feet of nothing but clothes on racks.

Reality Shows about Storage Auctions / Re: Storage Wars....Season "X"
« on: June 18, 2013, 09:33:36 PM »
In the second NEW episode on Tuesday, June 18, 2013, Barry got a set of healing bowls.

The "reverend" said new they would be $2,000, used she thought he could get $1,500.

Here's a set on eBay (new or used I didn't look) but they are offered at $950 or best offer.

.

When looking at completed listings singles (not a set of 7) were sold for $10 to $20.   Oh well.

AND..... when they do the tallying at the end of the show they throw that escalated WORTH figure in as how the buyers actually came through, so Barry was quoted as having MADE $2,000 or so.

Nothing's changed....it may have gotten worse.

For the first couple of years of SW I used to regularly review (and skewer) each show, but when they started having mid-season new starts and Dave blew it all apart and you never knew when it was going to be on, I quit doing that.

Not a blow by blow tonight, but a couple of thoughts.

In the first NEW episode tonight there were two couples, two sets of clowns (Barry and the brothers) but in the 2nd NEW episode tonight it was back to Barry, Darryl, J&B and Ivy.  One thing you can count on now...you can't count on seeing one group or another. They have mixed up the episodes they taped during the fallout with ones after the fallout and it's anyone's guess who you will see.

On the other hand, this picture of an item that J&B landed might just about say it all.

Here are a couple of more long shots to give you an idea of the scale of this place.

The first one shows the entry area on the far right. There is a blue canopy there where boxes of books are
available. The morning I was there half a dozen guys (most with bar-code readers on their phones) were checking out the possibilities for re-sellable books.

The next two canopies (with open faces directed toward the camera) are blue bins of "stuff". I looked very quickly and there was not much going on there.

The long white canopies to the left in that picture are maybe 75 or more pieces of furniture...all particle board.

Picture below shows the full width of the wooden furniture area.

Dang.  Lot nicer than our SA ARC.
Ours is in industrial area right in the middle of drug central.

The whole place has to be about 300 acres. On the longish road in from the frontage road I saw a building of about 1500 square feet that was the chapel.

I suspect it was a "ranch" of some kind and was probably donated to the Salvation Army.  Quite a few wineries, ranches, farms have big houses like that right on the working spreads. The large number of large outbuildings supports the former ranch idea as well.

Here are some pics and descriptions of a large Salvation Army facility which is north of San Francisco, CA in Healdsburg, Ca.  This is not just a store. It is one of their ARC (Adult Rehabilitation Center) operations. It has a large living facility for folks who have addiction problems. They live and work at the center. This one has a pretty nice "dorm"...see first pic.

The next pic is a wide shot of a series of large canopies. Later pictures to follow will get closer to the action.

In the picture below the cars shown are for sale.

Craigslist / Re: Any successful Craigslist sells?
« on: June 16, 2013, 09:59:32 PM »
I live in a small town of about 27,000 people, that are near many small towns near as well with a fairly good amount of people.  I'm curious if anyone has had really good luck, or bad luck like me.

You may have answered your own question. Look at the total population you are addressing. Is it 50,000 or 150,000?

The more possible buyers the bettery your chances would be I think.  How long have you been trying to sell on clist?
If only for a few months or even 6 months to a year, you have to consider: time of year, employment in the area, the items you're selling, the prices you are selling at, etc, etc.

I have been selling on clist for 10 years and I can tell you that there are up and down times of the year and even of the decade!

Right now it is DOWN for me, though I have had two big ($300 plus) sales in the last two months but aside from that just a couple of $40 or so sales on and off for the last 4 months.

I have to admit it's been harder then I thought. The learning curve is pretty steep, and upscaling the business model is no easy task. It becomes an addiction though, once it hooks you in it's hard to give up, as long as some cash flow is coming in. It really is behaviorally similar to casino gambling or gold prospecting.

In my opinion it's the "long haul" that counts and most won't make it for very long given the circumstances under which they are starting in today's environment.

Also, CHANGE is definitely necessary (due to the tv shows) and that's what has kept me going. Picking is where it's at for me right now...tomorrow who knows what it will be.

The Lounge / Re: Texas....72oz steak !
« on: June 16, 2013, 10:05:43 AM »
Don't quote me, but I think I remember a TV show about the restaurant and the record holder for finishing the steak in the quickest time is a Bengal tiger!

We actually CAN quote you as the CBS show also showed a pic of the tiger...I think he ate it in 9 seconds or something!

A human being finished a steak in 8+ minutes.  Needless to say the number of people who tried and "failed" is far greater than the list who succeeded dating back to 1965. Heck, it's only 6 pounds of steak ! I'll stick with the 12oz size.

The website even has two web cams where you can watch this event LIVE !

I thought Travis was the biggest thing in Texas until I saw a feature on the CBS Sunday Morning Show...

...turns out you can get a FREE 72 oz Steak at the link below....IF you can eat it in one hour.

After checking out their website, look on the left of the screen for the list of people who have actually eaten a 72 oz steak in an hour....OR LESS !
