The Treasure Chest / Re: My Locker Find
« on: July 04, 2012, 09:27:17 AM »
Barry strikes me as a guy just trying to enjoy retirement.  He's got money but I know guys in produce. It's a hard business. You learn to take calculated risks. And, like stated in so many threads, we are all there for different reasons. He could outbid everyone but bids to what he thinks is good for whatever reason he's set up in hi head.

Brandi?  Well, girls tend to go for cocky a**holes.  Alpha male, sh*t.
But seems to have worked for her.  Decent enough looking guy. Loves his kds. Provides. Got some money now....     And he puts up with her b*tchy-ness.   (Tho, so would I....very few can wear "B*TCH" and make it look good.  ;)  ).  She met him young...Making it work. Good for them.

We're not gullible, WE understand it a f*cking tv show.  We've been doing this and the like way before it aired.  Most, yes, probably got into it with the notion we would make big bucks.
But aftera while, it got to be all normal. None of it seemed like crimes. [sic] was just enterprising. He and the guys make bucks hustling while other guys sat on their asses waiting for handouts. Our husbands weren't brain surgeons, just blue-collar guys. The only way they could make real money was to go out and cut corners.  <enter stage left 'movieman' to voice over from shadow the name of movie qoute>

So once again, we understand the show isn't "fact", it's just entertainment.  If we want a show that isnt staged, facts, truth, unbiased opinions and "everything out in the open, no cover ups" we would watch Fox News like you.   ::)

Garage Sales / Rummage sale pricing<question>
« on: July 03, 2012, 11:00:53 AM »
Have two charity rummage sales coming up.
One to support my friends Autism foundation where they teach children with autism computer skills (such a challenge but helps them so much. You should see these kids. They are awesome)
Second is for other friend opening a private school (k-6) cause local public school is so over crowded.
Needs funds so he can enroll anyone that wants, not just the rich kids.

At both there is a question on pricing items.  Majority of people say toss it out and let people make offer.

I say, tag it.  To many people walk away if no price. Embarrassed to ask, think its to much....
And if it's marked $10 thy can talk you down or you can mark it down, thy think they got a deal.

It's a psychological thing.  People will pay more.

Plus, your going to get people working there that either think something is valuable and price to high and it won't sell; or price things way to low.  $1 for things people would be happy to pay $5.

Already, I've donated some coins. One is a set of war time steel pennies. All three mint marks in one case.
They wanted to ask $20.   I donated them cause who ever had them polished them and burnt the steel.  Has that rainbow look.  The set sells for about $1.50, $3 at coin shop.  But one person saw on eBay that one penny was "listed" at $14.99.   Not sold, listed. And it was an uncirculated penny.
People just don't know what thing are worth or the art of pricing for negotiation.

Anyway, for you yaurd sell'rs and swap meet people, what's been your best pricing strategy?
Tag sale or open offer?

On a positive note, I've cleaned out some inventory that's been sitting and for good causes.
All the jeans.  Low value coins.  Lots of Nintendo DS accessories that GameStop wouldn't take.
(I seem to be a magnet for DS stuff....)
Just all that little crap, $1-$5 items, that you never seem to get round to selling......

Im rambling. Point of order.  Yard sell pricing techniques.  Suggestions.  Thank you.

What kind of snakes do you have round there?

You have all the cool stuff.   Only thing you stumble across around here is cute fuzzies like rabbits and deer.  Go east 50 miles or so and you get to where rattlesnakes can just survive.
Found a scorpion once when rock climbing. That was cool.

But I want alligators and things in my back yard!

Can I come live with you?    I don't eat much and promise not to kill you.

LOL Why you need a fancy phone.....

I do.  Many of them, in fact.
 Just...they are kinda...all....in pieces.  :-\

That was not one of my better laid out plans.  But I learned a lot.  At least now I can fix, unlock, jailbreak my own stuff.  Wouldn't dare do for others.  Tend to break more than I fix.    ::)

I agree with above.

Either work a deal with facility to auction it or figure a way to go get what you want on your own.
Fly out, stick contents you want on Amtrak or Greyhound and fly home and wait for it.  Maybe then auction it off?

Your CL idea might work but think your setting yourself up for a nightmare scenario.

You MAY be able to work it where they auction it with notice that such-n-such items must be returned to owner (you) and you will pay shipping. But I wouldn't count on it.  Would have to be a pretty cool manager to agree to that.  Lotta work for them with no benifits.  Doesn't hurt to ask, tho.

Other idea, don't know your financial state, but have you priced a moving company?
They can go pack and ship it.  My friend had his entired house and cars packed and shipped from Seattle to L.A. for $2300.  Guessing just a locker wouldn't be all to expensive....?

Last idea.  Fly ME out.  I like the Kimpton hotels.  And prefer either small luxury or SUV's.  Couple gift cards to a nice steak house or maybe Asian fusion style resturant would be nice.
I'd be happy to have your stuff....uh...I mean....get.....get your stuff.   ::)

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Bought my First locker the other day
« on: June 29, 2012, 11:39:27 PM »
I personally would have passed.

Like movieman said, people are there for different reasons.

I'm there for personal use stuff at auction as my first goal. When the door goes up thats what I scan for.
Shouldnt be but I'm always looking to upgrade my personal belongings.
After that I scan for resale items.  Primary outlets for vintage kitchen wares and tools (both vintage and modern).  After that....long list, but point is I have a market.  I go down list.  Perhaps I already have saturated my contacts or have stockpiled inventory in particular items so I'll pass on more.

I also have limitations.  Ive had multiple shoulder surgeries in last 2yrs.  I stay away from larger items.
I currently have no truck. I have very limited storage.  And in past few weeks I've made some high dollar "investments". High profit margin but will take a while to refurbish and limited market so will have to sit on item a while.  Buying/selling is my only sorce of income untill Fall.  So really watching funds.

So....
Your locker. Great for you. And I'm always on look out for those quick turn over. I like your attitude. Grind it out.  $58 is better that going home empty handed.

Fo me, tho.  I'd need to  grab help and at least pay for thier lunch. Rent truck or borrow and throw some gas in it.   Won't even talk about sellability cause already that $58 is gone.

Welcome and good luck!

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Wasted morning....

Just pick up some Mexicans at the Home Depot the morning of the auction so you have help cleaning out and moving a decent unit. No units won, no problem, just buy them lunch and through them a few bucks for their time, but atleast you don't have to pass up all the good units cause of your condition.

I've actuall have hired those guys before.  lol

Back when my friend started his roofing business we would swoop those guys up.  Pay by job, not hour.
Tell them that when he roof is clear and all loaded in dumpster they'd get $100/ea.
Man! Those guys would be done by noon with out even a nail left on ground. Beautiful.

Have used them a few times for heavy lifting/clean out.  But not from start to finish.  My Spanish isn't all that great.  Who knows wht directions I'd give them!  lol

If I had eight ice cube and you had twelve bananas, how many pancakes could you fit on the roof?

Purple!
Cause alien don't wear hats!

Ive decided not to set alarm.  If I wake in time, great.  If not, guess I needed sleep more.   ;D

Reality Shows about Storage Auctions / Re: Is Hester broke?

All I know is he was strong arming the show for more money. Maybe they said F-U and spinning it the way they are....?

I heard the lawsuits are settled but don't know out come. Perhaps he is no long allowed to say "YUUUP"
Maybe he stopped going to auctions cause "YUUP <registered trademark of trey songz, licensed and held, with in permission forth set and held in accordance to songz incorporated>" takes to long to say.....   ;D

Stories about Storage Auctions / Wasted morning....
« on: June 27, 2012, 03:21:45 PM »
Four auctions and three cancelled.
Fourth was two units.  First was a closet with weights from like the 70's and garbage. Literally garbage all over.  Looks like renters were able to come snag their stuff and left crap.

Second unit was really nice for scrapper. 20x20 packed full with hot water tanks and washer/dryers and like. Didn't take a genius to tell this was an appliance graveyard.  Looked like they had even been plucked for parts.  One guy opened at $10 and no one bid against him.  Can scrap himself or take the easy way and just have scrappers come pick it up at discount.  Either way he got a nice little pay day!

I was tempted but I haven't done scrapping on large scale in some time. And I'd almost have to call scrapper for pick-up and since I've never done it, don't know who pays, pays what.....
Would of taken me more than the 24hrs they give to clear out and this facility is spendy so renting unit for month would of cost me a pretty penny.

Figured this guy looked like it was his thing.  In fact, I'm thinking he knew, and came, for this unit cause as I left he was pulling up a huge flatbed truck with cherry picker and loooong trailer.  Not the type of vehicle (or trailer) you see at our average auction.
Why drive up price on him for something I'm not sure of.

But for me it was a waste of $10 of gas a several hours....   :-\

This makes 11 auctions since taking medical and I've won ONE. And it wasn't anything to brag about.  I admit, Im pretty picky due to circumstances but this is getting old.   I keep saying I'm not going untill  I'm better and can have a better choice of units to bid on but I get bored and head out anyway......   ::)

Craigslist / Re: CL iPad app
« on: June 27, 2012, 01:48:14 PM »
Movieman -

I highly recommend upgrading to an iPad with front cam if your going to Skype with your daughter often.
I use it cause my family in Dallas.  Don't want the little ones forgetting what their uncle looks like.

iPad is so handy.  Don't have to be sure to be home or if they want to randomly call.
Plus, either side can take it to family functions or what not. Pass it around.
Picture quality far better than my pc.

Not a must have but just a bit handier.
GameStop has some deals going. Thats how I got mine.  Traded a bunch of games and consoles for it.
They are now taking in iPhones, iPods of all makes and iPad trades too. And at, obviously less than retail, but fair prices.

As far as using it for taking pictures to post, I think you'll be happy.  Say 75% of items can be shot just as well for what you need.   Does fall short with lighting and no zoom.  When you hold pad close to get close shot it tends to blur a touch cause it can't focas due to you can't hold pad still enough.

I'm going to have to buy a hotspot. So I can do research on the fly.
I don't have data on phone cause it's free service thru family member.
At least a hotspot I'd have it on phone, iPod, iPad, laptop and for as often the Internet goes out at home....nice backup.
Plus the shop doesn't have Internet so I'd have it there....or hotels.....

Think it's time.

I think you migh dig the CL app if 1) your iPad had a camera 2) they get the glitches fixed.
It has it's perks.  I do like being able to get all the pictures taken then just post as I'm waiting for doctor appt or what not.  totally see people that use phone as camera using app.  Simplest way.

Also can put item on "pending" and if it's a no show simply erase pending status
Sure, can do that out and about on the web based version but it's literally 20seconds

Even tho I'm not happy with CL app and it sucks, I'll still use it if only because it's easier to take picture on iPad and simply import to CL with three taps on the screen......

Haven't used eBay.......

i use the ipad app

But have you used CL app in couple days?
None of my listings are showing.  I even did a test one this morn with weird key words and CL app says they are there but I don't see them and key word search show's nothing......

CL has another update I'm doing now. Maybe they fixed it.   ???
