This is an interesting story about an auction find of unpublished photos from the 50's and 60's by a talented  photographer.  She died at age 83 after a winter-time fall that resulted in her death.

The woman and her work are the subject of a documentary which will debut sometime in 2013.

This is from about a year ago, but it could represent any number of newbies who are still showing up (though in smaller numbers in some areas).

This guy made every newb mistake there was and the follow up comments are just as interesting!

Needless to say his "...journey to millions" is still on-going.

The story below was found in a forum that had nothing to do with storage auctions (per se) but a user posted the story in a "dump" type area.  The question he posed was "Do the storage managers take things out before they sell the lockers?

The section below in blue was one of the answers. This was posted in the other forum in mid-march, 2013.

short answer yes

long answer

We hired some girl to work in the office. We later found out she was stealing from us. Pocketing some of the cash payments while depositing the check payments. Took us a while to gather the evidence.

Anyways, after they arrested her (yep, arrested her), we had a locker that was behind on payments so we went through the standard procedures to sell the contents. When we opened the door we saw a whole bunch of the facilities equipment (that we thought had been stolen) in there. Turns out the locker was in the girl's brother's name so basically she had been stealing stuff and stashing it in the locker. So, yeah, we took that back.

other than that, no

as a followup on the story......

After she got let out of jail, she skipped town. About 7 or 8 years later the sheriff's department called me to tell me she came back and turned herself in. She got probation and as part of that probation part of her wages were garnished to pay us back. So, I would get a check every once in a while. These stopped for about a year then I started getting them again. They've since stopped again.

What is the best deal you have ever found at a garage sale?

My qualifies for "best" are when I pay $3 or so and it turns into a $150 or more sale.  You?

Garage Sales / Sources for finding garage sales
« on: June 12, 2013, 08:02:42 PM »
Where do you look to find out about garage sales? Do you look in the paper, on the internet, wander around or something else?

It's the something else that would be interesting. Are there sources the rest of us don't know about?

Garage Sales / Negotiating a price at a garage sale

How much do you negotiate at a garage sale?

It takes a real newbie NOT to negotiate, but how much is too much...or is there such a thing?

Garage Sales / Early Bird at Garage Sales...are you one ?
« on: June 12, 2013, 07:58:59 PM »
Do you show up at garage sales prior to their “opening” time ?

If so, does this "early bird" approach work for you? Do you use any special spiel to get cooperation?

Garage Sales / Is everything for sale?
« on: June 12, 2013, 07:56:51 PM »
Some buyers feel that "everything is for sale"... Have you ever bought something at a garage sale that wasn't "for sale"?

Sometimes when you walk up to a garage sale the boundaries are firmly placed at the entrance to the garage and the sale items are outside on the driveway. Other times you can see people wandering around inside a garage that isn't set up (with tables) but stuff is obviously for sale.

Do you ask about items hanging on the walls or up in the rafters?  If so, what is the typical response if there is one?

Do you go to garage sales even if the weather is bad (windy, rainy, hot, etc)?

What's the "line" for NOT going to garage sales?

Apparently the gondola locker did not sell. Here's the link showing why.

See the link below for the latest virtual auction on the Travis site...has two days left.

Starting bid appears to be $500 for this smallish locker.

Be great if it sold!
