General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Safe !
« on: March 12, 2014, 05:21:36 PM »
I think I have bid on and won 2 units with safes showing. One unit I didn't see the safe but others did, luckily it was a group of newbies so even the unit with the safe showing under clothes that I missed only cost me somewhere around $350-$400. Not much other then paperwork in the safe if I remember correctly but contents that should have been in the safe were all over the unit. I think the details on this one are in the V.I.P. section.

The other unit with a safe cost me $1250. I thought the unit was still worth it at that price with or without a safe showing. I saw this one! Almost nothing of any re-sale value in it, mostly homemade porn and personal info; social security numbers, birth certificate, etc. except there was this little bag at the bottom of the safe and a nice 14k ring popped out of it.  :)

Had one other safe in a unit and it was hidden waaayyy in the back, and ohh boy, that was a nice one! Sorry boys & girls no details on this one!!  :P Lets just say it made my day, and the one after that, and the one after that....

My new motto is "The best safes are the ones NOBODY can see!"

The real bummers, in my experience, are the small sentry fireboxes. Almost always filled with paperwork, photos, porn, drugs, & personal memorabilia (concert tickets, babies first tooth,etc.).

What's it Worth?? / Re: Mushroom stoneware set?
« on: March 06, 2014, 03:10:15 PM »
Looks early to mid 1970s, late 1960s is possible. Anything with Mushrooms & Owls from the mid 1960s to the mid 1980s is real popular with the hipster & old hippie crowd nowadays. Just got to get that in front of the right set of eyes. Try a flea market in a college town or near a university; Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, so you don't have to deal with a packaging & shipping nightmare.

Craigslist / Re: cList....is dead!

Not a whole lot going for me on Craigslist right now either. I think the weather has been a big factor, colder and snowier than normal this winter.

Tools...I know the unit will go higher then I am willing to pay.

MOLD!

Rodent droppings.

Liquor, produce, fast food boxes.

Mattresses can be a double edge sword; sometimes they keep me from bidding on a unit but other times they are the reason I can get a good unit for cheap cause others don't want to mess with them.

We've probably covered this topic in one way or another over the years but I thought I would just try to keep the conversations fresh.  :)

What is the ONE item that if seen from the door will drive the price of a storage unit beyond what is reasonable based on what else is in the unit? Here are my top three.

1. Rolling tool box
2. Small firebox (fireproof document case)
3. Fishing pole(s)

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Storage Unit Dreams

Austin Martin Vanquish, of course totally covered with boxes and hidden in the back of a 10x30 or 10x40.  8)
Oh, and no title lean!  :)

I've determined that any unit is staged / fake if it doesn't have a hot glue gun and a box of vhs tapes.

Your right! What is it about hot glue guns being in like every unit! I've never bought a hot glue gun in my life, am I missing something?

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Let's Play: "What Would You Pay?"

I typically don't bid hard on those type of units cause they go high in my area, but to make a serious effort to win it I would probably have to bid at least $1,000 and most likely just north of $1,250.

Without getting too stereotypical or judgmental, what "type" of people tend to have storage units with better quality items then you might expect if you had not won their unit(s)? I'll go first...

College students: Typically I think of college students as being young, not accumulating any wealth, little job experience, etc. but I have found in college student units: New name brand clothes (Abercrombie & Fitch, Aeropostale, Polo, Holister, etc.), jewelry, scientific calculators, collectible toys new in the box, latest modern video gaming systems & games, large collections of DVD's & CD's.

Disclaimer: Not ALL college student units are like this, some are pure junk like anyone else.

How about you? Who surprises you, in a good way?

What are the most common items found in storage units that have high or relatively high retail new values but have piss-poor re-sale values used? I will take out one of the obvious first choices.

1. Mattresses & box spring sets.

2. Golf club sets & tennis rackets.

3. Wrist watches.

Cobia....

What is the character in your avatar saying?

It says something like "Look Out! We got a bad a$$ over here!" I think I picked it from a topic thread here a couple of years ago when some buster got on here acting like he knew it all about the biz and got called out on it.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Reupholster?
« on: February 10, 2014, 06:15:06 AM »
I think the cost to reupholster furniture has overrun the selling price of furniture even nice antique furniture over the last 5 years. I recently came across two very nice antique sofas and my re-upholstery guy quoted prices of around $700-$800 each to rehab them. In todays' market, even with good antique styles, that kind of price can put you at break even or easily a loss. Just going to send them to auction as-is and hope some do-it-your-selfers are there who want to reupholster the furniture for themselves and will pay a couple of hundred dollars, otherwise they are $20-$40 pieces.
