General Storage Auction Talk / Re: How appropriate
« on: October 04, 2011, 10:45:03 PM »
Thanks for the great comments, hearing them is a great pick-me-up. I pretty much agree with everthing I read. I had not won a unit in a month and upped the risk factor and got burned a little. I think upping the risk is needed in the current environment but I won't get carried away like this one. I looked at it as a good learning experiance and I'm ready for the auction Monday after I get back from the beach. Good luck to everyone.

I work for the Post Office and you will definitely be contacted about putting anything IN or ON the actual mailbox. Some postmasters will give a warning call and some won't. They will come for .44 1st class postage for every one they find. If you dodge them they will put the Postal Inspectors on you. Seen it happen many times. Put it in a paperbox or on the post, but don't mess with the box. Not worth the trouble.

I passed on at least 40 units at several auctions before I bid and didn't win. A couple days later at a caravan I got my first 2. Have patience and a gameplan and you will do fine. I did not heed my own advice yesterday and learned a tough lesson about the storage auction business.

Got my first loser unit this weekend, and when I log in I'm back to noobie status. Wish I had been a looky loo yesterday, but it was just a matter of time I guess. 5 total hours of work cleaning out, 2 dump runs and a probable 40.00 loss. Oh well, it's fall break for the wife and kids and I'm on vacation for ten days.  8)

Can't remember the name of the show, I think on Discovery, but the guy traveled to specifically get 2 jugs of this for his collection of oddities. The term "snake oil salesman" came to mind.

Wanted to give some numbers from this unit as I sold 90% of it in my recent yardsale. Bought this unit for 105.00, and made 208.00 so far. Used clothes-96.00, used coats and sweaters-40.00, misc. items-37.00, Avon products-35.00. So I doubled my money, got the 13 totes free and kept 40.00 worth of other stuff. Turned out to be a good little unit.

Not sure where you are acman, but I'm getting 10 cents/lb for steel, 65 cents/lb for aluminum in TN. Get a magnet and estimate what you will get. I'd probably scrap it just to be done with it cause it may be hard to find a buyer plus repair time/cost and hauling it around.

Not something I would do. I do bid on units I'm not interested in to break the boredom if the units are sucking, but I bail early enough not to run it up.

It's not bad money when like you say "not anything better to do". I tear down all non working elecrtonics and salvage as much as possible and toss the rest my garbage the city picks up. I like hanging in the garage with TV on tinkering anyway. Those chunks of copper wire are pretty.

I agree, this thread has been epic. Thanks for all the time you put in to share it with us Movieman.

Brand new human and synthetic hair extentions for black ladies. Not really weird, but a balding middle aged white guy selling them is.

Garage Sales / Re: Yard Sale Time

Ok, that's it for the sale and we made another $290.00 today. The traffic was really good again today with another 75 or so. By the end of the day had sold about 80% of inventory. Will have a small load to go to mission I donate to and it's on to new units. I tried an idea today I've been thinking about. I started telling some of the shoppers that the stuff came from storage units, every one said "oh like the show", and then asked them for an e-mail to send inventory list to. Not one said no, I got several and they began telling me what they were interested in which I noted. I plan to do this from now on and see if an e-mail database that I send regular inventory updates leads to sales. All in all it was a grand slam for us but damn am I whipped. Best of luck to everyone.

Garage Sales / Re: Yard Sale Time

Ok, day 1 is in the books. Started with rain this morning until 10am so i put all my hanging clothes just outside garage under tarps to make room to sell out of garage. Had sale from 6:30 till 4:00, brought in about 80-90 customers and did $500.00 in sales. Needless to say but I am very pleased. I know some of you have had a tough time with yardsales, but I live in a prime spot, great cul-de-sac neighborhood in a dense middle class population of a city of 125,000. I absolutely sold the hell out of clothing today. Volume is the key to clothing and I target units rented by women that are packed with clothes. When I sort units I toss any clothes that are not in excellant condition, I do not launder them, if they are really dirty they get tossed. All jeans, jackets, sweaters, skirts, dresses are hung and sold for 2.00 each. All other clothes are on tables sorted by womens/girls and mens/boys @ 50 cents. I put all used shoes under each clothes table and price at 1.00 each. Any really nice article in any category I price more with a tag. Brand new items are sold at 40% of retail price on tag. I had 75 pieces of new baby clothes on hangers with tags and sold 30 of them today. I individually priced all other items and only had about 10 people haggle with me for an extra buck or 2 off. My wife worked with me and we engaged every customer that walked up about what was available and at what prices. Some customers told us someone called them and said get to this sale just after they left our place, so that is exciting as I know what inventory at what price gets people out to buy. I advertised in newspaper, Craiglist and street signs. Weather looks good Sat so I hope to get rid of the rest of it. Will let everyone know how it finishes up.
