Yes I do. Or better gift is buy the unit and give them the key

This one made me think of giving one to my in laws. They would be so pissed. Wish I had someone in Denver to buy one for me.  ;)

Auction today had 6 units. Only 10 bidders and most were regulars. All units went under $100 except for the last one which was not bad. I ran it up to $400 but it went for $500. It had a really nice bike, entry table, lawn mower and hedger, several boxes, full mattress and a small safe. Everything was very clean and nice. I have a customer that is looking for a mattress and could have gotten $100 out of that. Next time...

There is one just above Monterey that is really good. We make the trek up there once a year near the holidays. They have five shipping containers set up outside the store with tons of surplus. Takes a while to dig through it all.

Glasses and dishes. I display them right up front in the store. At least one dinning table every year. Christmas decorations. Coats, coats and lots more coats. Those are on a rack outside the front door.

I had the same problem at a silent auction. 7 units and they were all good. Ended up with 5. Space and time was the biggest hurdle. I make a really good deal of money with them though so not complaining.

Bought a unit one time that had an awesome art deco dresser. The way it was sitting it looked great. Once I got inside I found that the side facing away from the door had fatal water damage and two drawers were only fronts. I was disappointed as me San Fran buyer would have paid good money for it. Went into the garbage. You win some and you loose some.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Walking away from a unit
« on: November 10, 2013, 08:02:10 PM »
Good, bad, ugly I have never walked away from a unit. A couple of months ago a bidder showed up at an auction that had walked away. Newbie and the unit was way more than he could handle. We were at a different facility but same owner. He was not so nicely asked to leave. I felt bad for him because it didn't have to be done so publicly in my opinion. Guess that is what you get. Bad part for him is this owner owns 6 facilities in this small area. Sure cuts down on options to buy.

Nice article. Like you I let my customers "dig" through the back room. At first I din't want them in that area but stuff overflowed at one point and everyone loved it so why not. Love free advertising.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: I should have Bid

I think we all have those kick out self in the butt moments. I had one at the last auction. $250 for a unit I usually pay twice that much for. I really didn't want one that big so I didn't bid. Missed out on some really good stuff.

You will make a new friend today, Just hope he is not in a urn.

Wealth is coming your way, but not in this unit.

The next locker will be a huge improvement over this one.

When you look down all you see is crap so keep looking up.

For success today don't buy this locker.

I lurk on a storage facility forum once in a while. While there is not a lot of talk about auctions I have gained some knowledge on how they work from their side.  I mostly read because of the funny and weird stuff that happens at the facility and auctions.
Friending managers can be a good thing. I have one manager that really likes me. Last week she had a move out that left some things in the unit. She called and asked if I would be interested. I told her I would be in the following day to look. That morning she called and said they had loaded the stuff into a Uhaul and would bring it to me. So far in one week I have made over $150 on stuff that I put no work into. I have found in my area that most owners/managers just want the units cleaned out so they can rent again.

Was at a caravan one morning and the last unit come up. Boxes of books, pews, organ, etc. Was curious what it would go for so I stayed. Two guys bidding on it and it went for $550. I left and went to the next facility. The auctioneer took forever to get there. Apparently the man that won the bid was the Preacher of the church that owned the unit and he didn't have the money to pay what he bid. The unit was given to the next highest bidder who made a deal to let them buy back the stuff if they did it within a week. Never found out if they came up with the money or not. Even God looses a unit once in a while.

Wow nice find dbr. I've learned over the years to listen to that little voice. I found a small painting one day at the auction barn preview that spoke to me. I decided to look it up and see what it was. French artist from the 1930 and they go for $150 to $300. Everyone was shocked when I took it up to $27.50. Art normally goes between $5 and $10. I sold it for $175.
Expensive art can be hard to sell. I am still hanging on to two Thomas Kinkade prints I scored early this year and a Fredrick Remington Bronze. I'm not advertising them anywhere because they are a draw for customers but if I were really trying to get rid of them I'm sure they would be a tough sell.
