Stories about Storage Auctions / Son bought 3 lockers this morning
« on: August 30, 2011, 03:40:14 PM »
I had to work today and sent my 21 year old son to the auctions at PS.  He is not an experienced auction goer and the last time he bid against himself running himself up to $1000 on a unit when the last other bid was at $600. Well today he bought 3 units at the first place. I have not seen them yet but I thought I would open a thread and try to post some pictures as we get into them. He claims they are all outside units and he paid about $300 for all 3.  Or as he told me $50 for one $175 for one and he can't remember the other one.  Not much detail what is in them he did say one had a lot of boxes and I love boxes.  I think he did okay as all the outside units at that place are at least 10X15 so they must be bigger units. Check later tonight for updates. Oh and it was my money so its my stuff he gets the scrap that is his only source of income as he is going to school.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Jackpot ! Jackpot in the Safe ?

I have never sold a unit back to an owner I have sold individual things. I once sold a guy back his clothes for $50.  I felt sorry for him his Girlfriend abandonded the unit after kicking him out and moving all his stuff into it.  He was at the auction and did not have enough money to buy it.  There was thousands of dallars of clothes at retail but probably only a $150 at garage saes and it was quick sale.  I was contacted once the day of an auction about selling a whole unit back for $150 that I had paid $75 for but turned her down. After going through the unit I wish I had sold it but I do not like the idea after buyign a unit of not at least seeing what is in it. Bought a unit for $225 once and was contacted the next day.  Woman said it was her sisters stuff and she had forgot to make the payment. Well I had already cleaned the unit out and 2/3 was at the dump. I have never seen such ugly furniture rotted out couches and chairs for instance. Stuff had been in storage 8 years.  Found 5 pieces of gold and a lot of junk.  If I was you I would take the stuff out of the unit and tell her you are not gogin to sell it. I wouls think the knick knack at $333 would be a good sale for you. Heh great unit one we all dream of getting and a great price on it.

Great find I have never found a gun worth more then $100 in a locker. You have $1000 in guns there and that is a conservative estimate on a good day you might get a lot more. Nice safe to.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Things you may find in a good unit
« on: August 27, 2011, 06:12:15 PM »
These all came in a unit I paid $325 for and was very happy to find something of value in it. Not shown are the 9 knives worth about $250 or the chainsaw or all the military uniforms. I have already got $100 out of 3 knives and $60 out of the books from the unit.  I thought it would be fun to see what a good locker looks like. Nothign spectacular but turned out much nicer then  I thought. I was forced up over $250 which I thought was top value just liked the looks if it a lot of the tools were showing.  Oh there was bout $30 in change in the unit as well which is on the high side.

Okay a bunch of cement finishing tools many new one has a price tag of about $60 on it trying to get $125 for the pile on Craiglist.

About 75 pounds of nails in a couple neat boxes though they were full of ammo when I found the first one.

Vitamixer asking $175 on CL right now no nibbles yet. These can top $200 on ebay.

Champion Juicer runs good a couple hundred new hope to get $80 on CL.

5 Carhartt coats wrong time of year to sell them but 4 are like new. 4 are X large one a 44 all good sizes.

A set of new with tags Big bill bibs.  These are $50 new trying to sell on CL for $25.  Size is 32X32 to small for most will make them hard to sell.

A set of new Lacross hip waders size 10.  They woudl fit me but I already have a good set. These are like $100+ at Cabelas have a $60 price tag on them.  Trying on CL for $30.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Quickest way to sell new books.
« on: August 27, 2011, 12:31:35 AM »
I normally take ordinary books to half price books.  They pay poorly but the last batch I took I got $60 all from the same unit and when I got it I was upset because most of the books were taped together!  I figured they were all junk. They came apart okay only ruined a few. Lot of books on Martial arts and Yoga as well as health nut books. I was happy I bet I could have got more selling at a flea market but it would have been a lot more work. Last summer on a very hot I found a garage sale with everything marked free. I took all the books ran them down to half price books and got $33.  Paid for my gas that day while treasure hunting. At garage sales and flea markets you can get .50cents to a dollar a book thats about it for most books.  Now for valuable books ebay or half.com especially text books.  My best one was a complete set of the Warren Commision Report in the original boxs with a shipping address of the state department. I got over $2K for them on ebay. That was an exceptional deal the unit was rented by the son of a retired medical examiner who had died 20 years before and he apparently could not get rid of anything.

I live in a area full of immigrants legal and illegal. Had a garage sale a couple years ago and did great. It was fun probably had 4 or 5 different languages being spoken at once but immigrants have not been Americanized yet they still thought used goods were okay. Sold lots of clothes and low dollar items ot them.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Bought two units yesterday did okay
« on: July 28, 2011, 07:44:43 PM »
Went on my favorite PS auctio run yesterday the crowd was big about 40 people.  Lot of new people and prices were all over the place. I paid $125 for a unit a 5 X 10 with some car parts showing but not much stuff in it.  Well when I got into it I found the guy was a Mazda freak.  There were almost 300 new Mazda sparkplugs, there are a lot of other new and used Mazda parts as well. If I do not get $1000 out of this locker it is because I did not try hard there are almost 200 plugs that the ebay price is $9.50 each!
The other locker was a 5X10 about half full some cement finishing tools showing a car top carrier and a I could see a camo coat. The unit was poorly packed and messy.  I paid $325 for it and was kicking myself for spending that much. I just liked the look of it it was a mans unit but I figured I would lose money on it paying that much. Well on cleanout I found a small gas chainsaw, a Vitamixer, 9 good fighting knives worth $30 to $40 each), some brand new USA made hip waders, fair number of small tools, lots of military uniform items, and I am not done sorting it all. I will have no trouble making money on it but there was 16 years worth of bills and a bunch of newspapers so the dump fees will be high probably $50.
Those were the only 2 units that really interested me I looked at 17 units and bid on 3. There were a lot of really bad units and some of them went for $40 or $50 dollars. They were worth $1.  The other unit I bid on I bid $1 and it went for $5.
I long for the old days when $100 would have bought most 5X10s.

eBay / Re: Anyone Burned on Fee Bay ?
« on: July 24, 2011, 02:52:55 PM »
I got taken for over $400 on a knife I sold on ebay. Bidder was in France even thought I said I would not ship it out of the country.  Well I went ahead any way should have said no.  Took the guy 3 weeks to pay with paypal.  I ship the kinfe and follw the tracking through custums. Couple days later he files a claim on paypal says he never got the knife.  So in order to file a lost package claim you have todo a trace.  French post office said they delivered to the guy couple days after it cleared. Customs. I provided all this info to paypal and fough for a month. Never got my money back. Will not even consider shipping international again and have goen from hundreds of auctions on ebay to one every couple months.

Just wait till you find a package of Bologna that has been in storage for 6 months. Or my personal favorite was the 10 year old ketchup ever seen black ketchup?  Of course the baby sheets with poop in them was pretty bad to but it was dried out. Then there was the time was pulling stuff and grabbed a dead rotten rat by the tail.  Boy did that stink. I coudl go on o and on about the gross ugley smelly stuff but who want to hear stories about used sanitary napkins.  I like it when you find clothes in the drawers sometimes it means treasure still left in the drawers as well.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Lots of legal questions.

Actaully only a couple states require you to sell to a licensed firearms dealer most states are still free but Commiefornia is not.  In most of the USA a person may sell a gun to any resident of thier state with no limitations. Now if that person is known to you to be ineliglable to own a gun do not sell it to them, if they volunteer that information when buying the gun then it is a set up refuse to sell tothem. Best bet to sell is to research on gunbroker.com then take the gun to a gun show and expect to get less then on gunbroker. Or if you live in WA use Seattleguns.net to sell the gun. Do not sell to a resident of another state.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Worst Unit?
« on: July 07, 2011, 12:47:47 AM »
Happy 4th to everyone! I took a couple of pics- the unit is after the first load is on the truck. Behind the mattress on the truck is about 100 liquor boxes full of garbage. Most of the photos have the title of the movie, subject name, and the stamp of the photographer.

Looks like the kind of unit I like.  Lots of junk, was there a guitar in the case?  Those pictures should get you your money back I would think they may not pay the dump fees as well but I bet that you make money on the unit.

I bought a 10 X 30 that looked ugly for $40.  Turned out to be someones dump.  Worse thing was it had flooded and about half the 20 matrresses were wet.  Spent $200 at the dump got nothing back.  I think it was another locker bidder getting the $1 move in special then loading it up with trash. I found boxes with floorsweepeing including cut locks and personels from about 4 different people.
Thats not the only locker I have lost money on but it sticks out as the most work expended in cleaning out a unit and getting nothing.
