Craigslist / Re: Craigslist Apps
« on: September 16, 2014, 08:32:50 AM »
a while back craigslist rolled out a mobile version of their site which is actually pretty easy and userfriendly so never really bothered with apps. also i tend to post from my comp where all my pics are as oposed to on my phone.

Just wanted to share some helpful info. I just lost my top rated seller status on one of my accounts which means I lose my 20% discount in seller fees which some months can wind up being a discount of $1500. basically i occasionally get buyers who will pay and then say they made a mistake and ask to cancel or refund. i normally would cancel in order to get my fvf back. even though its the buyer who bought and didn't want i would cancel. well apparently now you can't have more than 2% of your acutions cancelled or request fvf fees back. i was just over 2% so lost my status. hurts me in search rankins and lose some discounts on fees and i thin maybe even shipping. ive basically decided that im gonna have to take a loss and eat some fees because the value by bieng a top rated seller outweights a few bucks lost on an item here and there. basically thats 2 transactions out of 100 that can be cancelled. im gonna save those for high dollar items and not the small stuff. just wanted to give everyone a heads up sometimes its better to lose a few bucks than lose your power seller status.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Reupholster?
« on: September 16, 2014, 08:27:29 AM »
It depends on the furniture. If it's something unique, uncommon or very old, I'd get it looked at. A number of years ago (20ish; I was 4-5 when it happened), my mother picked up a chair at a fleamarket for $5 - only to find it was a 400-year-old french piece. Needless to say, it went to get some new fabric and a new life. More recently, I have been given a victoria era sofa that's worth a pretty penny despite its rough shape, and worth far more repaired.

If it's just generic, new or junk though - toss it, give it away, or sell it cheap.

I'm on the same page, I don't like things sitting around especially big things that take up space. A quality piece or real wood piece and not particle board I may set aside and restain as I'm trying to get better at woodworking and find hte work enjoyable when I have some freetime but something like reupholstering or putting money into an item generally doesn't happen with me.

Craigslist / Re: Couch for sale - Guy is on motorcycle
« on: September 06, 2014, 12:13:03 PM »
I know its a pain to get your hopes up drive far and have an item be gone so I'll normally give someone a window but if they aren't there within the second of the time we agreed on its going to the next guy. If I have a lot of demand I'll tell people I got like 3 people comming at 3, I'm not trying to turn this into a bidding war but first person who arrives with the cash is taking it so hurry up.

I don't think it really matters whether you are new or not. Flea markets, garage sales, ebay, craigslist. Obviously first take a crack at methods that don't charge fees after that go to ebay.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Has anyone ever found a Rolex?
« on: September 06, 2014, 12:05:12 PM »
I've found some boxes of watch parts, bands, faces, etc including some rolex but never a working rolex. Parts can fetch a decent buck if they are from vintage watches though.

I personally see no positive effects. Auctions are more crowded, more of a headache, less parking, take longer, more headaches with idiots with no money buying or people backing out after winning, resale shops are paying less as they have more people comming in with items. I see no positives to the popularity of aucitons.

Before the shows came on as we all talk about the goold old days I would say it was like 40+ males were like 90% of buyers, however now you se a much broader mix. I still think its say 35+ more males than females but you get everything. I see a lot of women at auctions these days. I occasionally run into younger guys like myself as well.

eBay / Re: Is the percentage eBay charges sellers too high?
« on: September 06, 2014, 11:58:35 AM »
I know we all love to complain about fees but if we whine so much why are we on ebay? If you can find someone else who gives you the same or more exposure for cheaper by all means go there but nobody else comes close. Also if you actually sell volume on ebay you can save quite a bit of money. For example I started off with 2.9% paypal fees and now have it down to 1.9%. ebay fees I get a 20% discount on, shipping is much cheaper something that otherwise costs me $18.95 I can ship for about $12 with the ebay discount. Open a store, become a powerseller and top rated seller and fees get much more reasonable. ALso, keep in mind ebay isn't the right venue for everything, its kind of the lazymans way to sell and you pay for the convenience of not having to meetup with craigslist people in parking lots which I can gurantee costs you more in time and gas than ebay does in fees.

eBay / Re: Typical Ebay Dispute with a Buyer..
« on: September 06, 2014, 11:50:03 AM »
It's sad that ebay has become what it has become but I've learned basically to treat every listing like I"m selling it to a retarded 6 year old and go into great detail about any little problem or miscommunication there could possibly be because there are some bad buyers like this may be who will specifically target cheap items with fairly expensive in relationto the product shipping knowing if they complain it's oftentimes more costly to take the item back. You also have the not sketchy but just stupid people who don't read or who will make up issues just because they are picky.

On one of my accounts I'm allowed to charge up to a 20% restocking fee which is nice as that will typically cover shipping and any fees out of my pocket, in most scenarios if I get a return I actually profit.

I recently however had a crappy one. I was selling something used. Description was very detailed as were photos however ebay sided with buyer because I didn't have the word used in the title? THey give you so little space and your search ranking is based almost entirely on title and you want me to waste that valuable title space to put used when I could more accurately describe things in the desciption

eBay / Re: Christmas Stuff is starting to sell on Ebay..

ugly sweater parties are really big around xmas time so they sell really easy on ebay and they actually go for a decent buck as well. the uglier or wierder the better

I was more curious about people legitimately getting accounts back vs workarounds but curious to hear about anything. I have an account in good standing and no ebay problems but was asked about this a while back and looked around on the net for solutions for a colleague and seems it's almost impossible to get an account back unless there's some situation like your account was hacked and used by someone else and you can somehow prove it and even then imagine a huge headache.

As to starting new accounts, yeah anyone can start a new account and be setup within a matter of minutes, however new accounts are prety closely moniotored and if nothing else as soon as you want to sell more than a handful of items they will review your account to up either your limite or number of items and tehy will figure it out.

This isn't the same world we were living in even 5 years ago, the amount of technology and algorithms and stuff that sites have these days is crazy. They check IP addresses, wording of listings, types of items, addresses. The more you play around with using friends addresses and everything else basically the more addresses and ip addresses you blow up for others ie if those people were to try to use ebay in the future htey will have headaches. Can probably still get accounts or explain situation but I would guess ebay may blcok all addresses and stuff associated with your and your account as well.

A while back I had an offer to buy one of my ebay accounts for quite a bit of money but wouldn't do it because A. its against policy but even if I decided to ignore that, that account is forever associated with me so if the buyer of the account violates paypal or ebay they will shut down my account even though I had nothing to do with it and no explaining its not me as your not supposed to be selling accounts in the first place.

People complain craigslisters lowball you but you don't know lowballing until you've had a garage sale. I'd first go Craigslist, then ebay just due to little effort and time required for ebay vs sitting at a flea makret all weekend.

After that I'd say flea market is next best. Sure people are looking for deals but you got a large crowd of people comming to buy junk and make impulse buys. Garage sales are a lot of work and people aren't willing to pay anything for stuff. I'd be having people give me 47 cents in pennies. I probably sold tousands for dollars worthh of stuff and made about $143 after my most recent garage sale. Granted this was stuff I was ready to dump at goodwill anyway so something better than nothing but all that work setting up, sitting around friday and saturday for such a small amount of money not really worth it and havn't had a garage sale since.
