Mid West / Re: Who's in the Chicago area?
« on: May 12, 2011, 05:52:48 PM »
Well first let me say not knocking them because they have the most if not close to the most auctions. They run the whole circuit thing where you can attend their acutiosn all day and they plan them so it goes from one town to the next. They are also the most professional, organized, etc.

That said I still try to stay away from Blair Auction Auctions. Sounds odd right their the best at what they do but I dont wanna go right. Problem is too many people go to the auctions.

Also, this is more personal preference but I used to really like the younger guy they had running the auctions. He left the company and I heard took a lof of their clients so they have less auctions now than they did in the past plus I don't like the other people they have running them as much.

Lately I've been a lil more into police auctions, dea auctions, lost freight, post office, etc.

The Lounge / Re: Internet forums, trolls and flames
« on: May 12, 2011, 05:36:13 PM »
Yeah I agree it can be funny, I guess nto the trolls so much as seeing how some people take them seriously and react and get all worked up. It gets old quick though.

The other thing as well, just the nature of this message baord doesn't really lend itself to trolls. There's a smaller number of posteres so anybody new would be rocognized right away if they started trolling as opposed to some of the boards like citydata where it appeals to diff subjects and has more people.

The other thing, the place I notice trolls really getting worked up are on sites like citydata where they have sections like great debates, immigration, politics, etc. A troll may come out saying some crazy racist stuff, knocking a religion, etc and that gets people worked up. On this board yeah I just don't see a troll having an opportunity to work people up as much its not really as much of an already laoded topic or subject matter.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Bought my first locker!
« on: May 12, 2011, 05:33:38 PM »
I love and hate the units with lots of broken and crappy furniture.

Normally the furniture does't really dictate the type of stuff in the unit however many buyers are turned off at the prospect of having to move and dispose of all that stuff.

As long as you have a buddy who's apt dumpsters you can use to toss stuff out your good. Craigslist free section isn't bad either.

You can normally pick these units up for cheap because of this. I think a lot of people assume crap furniture equals crap stuff but I think a lot of people keep the old furniture thinking their son or daughter will bring it to college or the first apt so it doesn't necessarily mean they have crappy stuff.

Rogue, I'm dont get out as far west as you that often but your actually in a pretty good area. I've had some luck out your way, plano and sandwhich. I normally never travel this far but went out near amboy and had small crowds thoguh doens't seem like thy have as many auctions I generally have better luck in smaller towns and more rural areas than in Chicago and even suburbs.

Not exactly out your way but also seen some VERY small crowds in cortland area as well.

What's it Worth?? / Re: BNSF Railway Storybook ie plans and maps
« on: May 12, 2011, 11:55:18 AM »
Thanks for the feedback rogue, good points you made.

People who are itno railroad stuff are die hard about it. I know a guy who's been trying to track down this particular railroad book for years.

I was checking some railroad and even general transportation collectibles sites and was surprirsed to see the prices for some things and even stuff people collect. Things as simple as a deck or cards or cocktail napkin for a cruise ship tht's not even old or historic are going for a good buck and like you said, this isn't something that gets passed out to the general public so probably less common or at least a little more cool.

I guess I'll scan all the pages and put it on ebay in the next day or two. Maybe I'll post some more better quality scanned pics as well, there's some kinda neat stuff in the book.

LOL, movieman, was waiting for smeone to say exactly what you said.

I actually saw his response last night but held off on answering lol.

Rogue is actually my alter ego just to set me up for questions so I can link to my site lol only kidding.

Rogue, if your wondering whts going on a number of the regular posters on here have their own sites, ebooks, storage auction schools, etc and everyone plugs their stuff but gets on others for doing it worse than they do. I'll admit I'm guilty of it nad one of the bad ones. ANyhow, if you click the globe next to my name on the left side of this thread you can see where I get my auctions.

Figured I'd post that otherwise rogue would probably wonder what are these guys talking about lol.

What's it Worth?? / BNSF Railway Storybook ie plans and maps
« on: May 11, 2011, 07:02:32 PM »
This isn't very old nor is it of cool places so I don't anticipate it being worth much but I do know there's a lot of railroad and even just general transportation collectors out tehre. Saw some websites with some ridiculous things for sale for really expensive prices.

I found this BNSF Railway storybook. Basically it has photos of diff areas of track and businesses as well as some pics with mapped out thigns like no clearance on this side or here's where runaway trains go, etc.

There's alot more to it than the couple of pics I posted and I actually shoulda posted other ones as these aren't that interesting and there's actually some cool ones but just want to give an idea of what this storybook thing is.

I'll post some pics below so you can see. I guess I'll find out soon enough as I'll probably post on ebay tonight but just curious if anyone thinks this will be of interest to people or not.

I'll prob start the auction at 0.99 cents with like $2 shipping. If I can make 99 cents and add a point to my ebay score its better than just tossing it.

Other Forms of Selling / Well that was embaressing...
« on: May 11, 2011, 06:46:59 PM »
So stopped by one of my regular consignment shops, more of an upscale one womens clothes, knick knacks and they actually just bought the store next store and expanded all furniture there.

Anyhow, was stopping by to pick up a check and a few items that hadn't sold. Btw, it's all women working there. The owner asked me if I had any other new stuff. I picked up a few furniture items but she's kinda picky so offered to run out to my car and pick up my digital camera. Came in showed her some pics.

Love that piece bring it in, that ones nice but I'd have to see it in person, etc, etc, etc. Keep flipping what do we come across? Some fun pics the gf and I had taken lol.  Scrolled through those real quick and shut off the camera. From now on I have a memory card for ebay/cl, storage auction items and another for personal pics.

Glendon just did a video of this merchant service mobile payment thing through your smart phone. Really cool concept for craigslist sales and flea markets. Prices sound reasonable as well.

Problem is everyone is so freaked out about identity theft and cc number theft and people hear about card readers that retail workers buy to steal card numbers. I can't see many people being willign to let you swipe their card. It is a very cool concept though.

Back when I was 21 used to head to vegas about twice a month, back then you could get flights round trip for not much over $100 if I remember correctly and my buddy had comped hotels and meals everywhere.

Anyhow, fast forward about 6 or 7 years later cleaning out my suitecase and found a piece of stardust hotel stationary with a hooker named bellas phone number and lipstick kiss lol.

Was about to throw it out and then figured hey, I wonder if I can sell it on ebay. Wrote up a listing calling it a piece of vegas history since the stardust was demolished a few years back. What do you know made $5 plus a few bucks for shipping or a piece of paper that was going to go in the trash.

The "Other" Job / Re: Sick of my job!!!
« on: May 11, 2011, 05:56:50 PM »
The only work from home program taht's not a scam is the one you make yourself.

Basically you need to start your own business. Any existing work from home biz the money is made off peoples fees to jioni. They are all twists on MLM.

In college I did work from home scheduling pickups for vietnam vet drivers for clothes and stuff. Not a bad gig, you had to get something like 25 or 50 pickups and then you were done ith that route. If it took you all week you worked all week if it took you an hour you worked an hour. Not bad I think you got something like $150 per route. You could pick up multiple routes. Not great money or even a livable source of income but I coudl schedule 3 routes in about 6 hours so that's some good pocket change for the work involved.

hollywoodreporter.com/review/pawn-queens-tv-review-185354

I think I posted this link with a comment in another section the other day but since we got storage aucitons in the news now figured I'd post it here. The comments under the article are pretty funny as well.

Article about the show pawn queens about these two chicks that run a pawn shop. It's actually two guys and these ladies are brought in for the show but taht's reality tv for you.

I've been in the shop multiple times, once when they were filming actually.

Not that this is unexpected as all realtiy shows are staged but about two weeks prior I saw an ad on craigslist. "Do you have an interesting item to sell? Want to be on tv selling it? We can't tell you the name of the show but a popular show is filming...yadayadayada. So basically everything was set up from the get go, its not actually people walking in but like I said that would be expected
