Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: This was a good unit !

WTF! They left all those boxes in the rain to get soaked just so they could do a piece auction?  :-[

It was only misting and the occasional light sprinkle. I have been to these auctions when it was truly raining and the guys still haul the stuff out and put in the "street". They are not super careful. Usually there is a slight slope away from each set of units, causing a low "v" in the street. At least they keep the items out of the "v"...well, most of the time.  ;D

Stories about Storage Auctions / This was a good unit !
« on: May 17, 2013, 08:45:51 AM »
Went to a piece by piece auction the other day and there were 5 units they opened up to sell one piece at a time.

Several years ago I went to these but gave them up because they took a lot of time to complete. Sometimes all day.
This outing was for two facilities and they did take from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. but good lockers at both locations so the time went by quickly. I started going to these again when the regular auctions went down the toilet in my area.

First place, first unit: A 10 x 30 that took two hours to sell out. See the 4 pics below with comments between pics.

This pic was taken after the first load of hand tools was taken out of the unit. There were A LOT of hand power tools, shovels, picks, etc and all in good shape. The Shopsmith was in beautiful shape but around here they don't sell. It went for $125 which seemed more than decent and if it did re-sell, still some money to be made.

See the 30 or so green.white boxes in the corner? That's only HALF of what were in there. The space
just ahead of them was ALSO FILLED with those boxes. When this pic was taken they were out in the "street"
with people walking around looking in them. See picture 4 for more details.

One of the green & white boxes had these globes in them...they went with a 5 foot tall lamp that looked like a plant with a half dozen flowers where the globes fit in. Forgot to watch how much it went for.

OK, the boxes against the wall now were the ones that DIDN'T SELL when they were being sold a box at a time.
When people are done buying single pieces they move everything over to the side and sell it all off as a lot later.
This lot sold for $125 I think, so someone got a good deal of smalls for a pretty good price even though people weren't interested in buying them box by box.

I got a couple of the single-sale green boxes at $5 each; some went as high as $20 each depending on content.

****

At the second location they had 7 units. First two were crap. Numbers 3 and 7 were good and I made some good cheap scores. The crowd of 25 at the first auction had dwindled to 10 at the second facility.

All in all a good day and the "picking" was good.  ;D

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Legal notices
« on: May 16, 2013, 10:54:09 PM »
To the best of my knowledge the storage facility does the posting of the legal notice. They are the ones who also send out the registered letters (those letters the delinquents say they never got).  The only additional services I have seen auctioneers provide in regard to the auction is the cutting of locks (for which they usually get $20 to $25 a lock) and DMV work for vehicles (this would be prior to the sale) and of course that's for a price too.

The one auctioneer/lock cutter I know also takes pics and fastens them to the info sheet for the facility...still, $25 bucks a lock is pretty good especially if it gets up above 5 or 6 locks !

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Anyone ever use Fiverr?

Actually it has sold 17 copies.

So, all kidding aside, sales have increased 170% since the book's introduction. Now THAT'S the way to promote it !

Or to quote Travis, "...just kidding".

Why is almost everything on the site five bucks. It makes me really question what I'm getting.

Maybe I should sell my e-book there.   ;D

Sales would triple (to 3 copies sold).

Stories about Storage Auctions / Keep your mouth shut !
« on: May 15, 2013, 08:48:06 AM »
Went to an auction the other day and facility had 5 units. The last one was a jaw-dropper. Best locker I've seen in a year I think.

It was a 10 x 10 about waist level high, but GREAT STUFF showing; lawmower in box (we think) fishing poles (I could care less execept for what they sell for), Craftsman boxes with popped lids and original item showing inside, good Schwinn Cruiser bike, etc etc.  This wasn't a setup. You could just tell it was quality stuff, nicely packed and with regular stuff too...not just the goodies.

So what went wrong?   In back left corner just a slight view of the right-rear corner of a black scooter fender and as the flashlight went up (and quickly down) the dash panel of the scooter.

I was the third in line and two guys ahead of me were regulars. We walked down the hall and acknowledged what we saw to each other...BUT one guy didn't even see the scooter so that was a good sign and he had already bought an $800 locker so he was out for the day.

THEN, we look back at the crowd (only about 10 !) and see that a NEWBIE is telling the auctioneer ABOUT THE SCOOTER!  Auctioneer goes in to check it out. He comes out; says to the manager "I didn't see that scooter when we cut the lock", gets his phone out and walks down the hall to call home-office about it.  Comes back...DMV going to get involved and he wouldn't sell the rest of the contents by themselves.

INCREDIBLE !  The "rat" was a NEWBIE buyer who screwed the rest of us out of the chance to get this great locker!

KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT!

Thanks for the informative post. We need more posts like this to keep this forum lively & relevent.  :-*

Yep, lively is in short supply these days. Each day of the last 3 days or so there have only been about 10 posts per 24 hour period.  Maybe all 3000+ members are out buying lockers.  ;D

939
Yep, still crazy, still ruined.  ???

Makes sense since most of the newbies have regular weekday jobs so this would mostly be their only opportunity to become the next Storage Wars star.

He could sell his home, buy a brand new home and put $380K in the bank.

If money was the only consideration (and it isn't) the facts would still be true, but the other considerations have value too.

1) Leave behind children, grand-children, friends.
2) If married, wife would definitely have a say (see #1 even if man didn't care about #1)
3) Style of living different.
4) Climate different
5) See #1
6) Etc, etc, etc, see #1.

Money isn't everything that has value.

Congratulations to Alloro on his 1000th post. This forum is a better place thanks to your contributions. I feel like the forum owes you something other than that spare tire it's given you.  :D

You could send him a $100 gift card.  ;D

For 99.99% of the people who read these threads, this one will be hundreds if not thousands of miles away, but if you deal in MCM you might want to look at the 35 plus pictures anyway. A little extra knowledge never hurt anything.

The response for a search on the term "storage auction forums" (of which there are many) comes out at.....320.

To put this all in perspective, the monthy search for the term "sex" is 506,000,000.

The monthly search for the term "flea markets" is 673,000.

The monthly search for the term "Travis Lane" is "-" (not enough data).

The monthly search for the term "movieman" is 22,200 (there are many people who use this name on the net).

The monthly search for the term "cobia" is 74,000 (a large game fish).

The monthly search for the term "alloro" is 93,000 (a bay leaf, laurel, small evergreen tree)

Guess it pays to have an Italian name !

We know there are a lot of people interested in storage auctions, but how many are interested in online storage auctions?

According to a Google source it is 1,000 per month.
