Flea Markets / Re: That was really a long day..............
« on: May 07, 2011, 07:09:40 PM »
I think we all have better things to do than sit around at a yard sale, flea market or rummage sale but sounds like you got the right idea. Get a buddy or two to go along, have some drinks , have some food, have some fun while your making some money.

I love our outdoor flea market. Great Mexican food, they sell beer as well. If a buddy comes along were sitting arond outside having a few beers probably not all that different than whatever else I'd be doing otherwise. Plus if I get a good spot along the edges where I got some space I normally will take my bags out of my trunk and play some bags as well while we wait for customers.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Craigslist

Jross79 is an alter ego of TC just to find a way to shamelessly plug his site!!!

Only kidding!!!!

Jross, I was just kidding, I'm the same way, if its not just a shameless plug I normally only comment on articles and such when I really have a strong comment, especially with blogs as they are kind of a pain to comment on depending on how they are set up, especially so in blogger.

Also, TC, I'm kidding about the alter ego as well, just having some fun.

Drew, have a suggestion for a new topic. Storage Auctions in the media. Sure people can post articles they find online in any section but thought it mgiht be interesting to have a topic devoted to it.

I read a few interesting articles lately. One was about how last week storage wars had their highest ratings, 3.8 million. I thought it was interesting because I've noticed crowds diminished lately. Obviously no where near pre storage war times but quite a bit lower. I thought that was odd seeing as how the show now has more viweers than ever.

I suppose however that the people who were actually going to get out and check out an auction already have and realized either its more work than they thought or the show isn't accurate in the type of stuff you find in the average unit.

Anyhow, before I get too far off topic noticed a few other interesting articles lately and thought it may be a worthwhile category. Just my 2 cents.

I sold off a good amount of scrap silver lately before prices started to fall.

With the sudden drop just curious if you guys are holding waiting for it to bounce back or for long term or selling now while prices are high?

Obviously prices now aren't near an all time high not even close but just seems wierd job numbers come out worse, inflation is bad, etc all things which shoudl make it go higher and it falls fast.

I was watching Kudlow the other week and a guy was warning people about buying and mentioned some crash back in the 80's or so. I'm too young to remember that but it got me thinking, I wound up selling about half of the silver I was holding

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Why I dont like Online Auctions
« on: May 06, 2011, 06:48:06 PM »
bad if your buying it, great if your the seller though. I agree though, a while back I was looking into buying silver on ebay, wish I would have boguht some through a broker or anyone as prices were super low back then.

Anyhow, silver regardless of scrap, coins, bars, etc was going for WAY more over spot price than even an expensive dealer will sell for.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Gas Prices
« on: May 06, 2011, 06:45:40 PM »
I'll make you all feel good about your gas prices. In the city of Chicago prices are over $5, I try to fill up in the burbs or even NW Indiana if possible but even in the burbs I was paying $4.69 the other day.

TC, I was curious about your car or truck if you don't mind sharing, what do you mean by recycled garbage, do you run off vegetable oil or some other type of fuel?

A buddy of mine was really interested in buying an old VW or Mercedes diesel and doing a conversion.

Another idea if any of you guys are handy with working on engines and stuff. A guy who recently came and bought that wierd bamboo/cane chair from me and a few other items had a big truck, dont recall the model but a 250 or bigger. He had put an old diesel tractor engine in it and was getting fantastic mileage. Again dont remember exactly what he said but it was good.

Craigslist / Re: Do you barter on craigslist?
« on: May 06, 2011, 06:40:42 PM »
I love the concept of bartering as your getting something of value and something you want and probably giving up an item you are almost ready to throw away or sell for pennies on the dollar anyway.

I think my beanbag game is a good example cost to me $14, however at the time for someone to go out and buy a game of equal quality would be anywhere from $75-$150 depending on design, paint, etc.

The people who gave me tickets either weren't going to the game and were going to lose them or they were company tickets and didn't cost them a cent so we both got high dollar nice things we wanted without really giving up anything.

Problem is with how people treat bartering which is illustrated by moviemans example.

You gotta deal with a lot of stupid emails offering you lamps and an outdated laptop for a car or motorcycle but you can make some great deals.

Flea Markets / Do you prefer indoor or outdoor flea markets?
« on: May 05, 2011, 11:56:03 AM »
Which do you prefer? In my we have a few indoor ones that are really large and have great crowds but its' such a pain having to unload all your stuff and bring it inside through the same entrance 100 other people are trying to bring crap in through.

I like the outdoor in that you can just pull up your truck to your spot and your good.

Obviously though as this is a storage auction forum do you ever barter your storage finds?

I love doing it, its just a hassle people want to barter your good stuff for their crap.

I picked up a motorcycle a few months ago at an auction. I was looking for a flat panel tv and was willing to do an even trade so whoever had one was getting a good deal yet I didn't get any emails of people with tv's, I got a ton of emails from people saying... "here is what I have to barter"...

3 lamps
1 sony playstation controller
10" subwoofer
easton baseball glove
etc, etc, etc

people send these emails listing tons of cheap totally random stuff hoping a lot of crap will equal one good item lol.

Craigslist / Do you barter on craigslist?
« on: May 05, 2011, 11:49:02 AM »
Do you guys barter on craigslist at all? I love the concept and love bartering and if you find reasonable people it's a great deal for both parties as normally both of you have items that no longer interest you however are of great interest to the other person so you get a new toy or somethign you need and your really not losing out on anything.

I used to make beanbag toss games and barter them on cl. Would normally trade for tickets to sporting events. My games cost me about $14 in supplies and could normally trade for 4 tickets to a sporting event. It was a good deal as my games didn't cost me very much and mos tof the people I bartered with had season tickets throughtheir company that would have gone to waste anyway and they didn't pay for so good deal for both sides. Tickets are also easy to resell if I wanted cash or I'm a sports fan so always up to go to a game.

I was at a pawn shop in one of the Chicago burbs the other day, turns out they were filming pawn queens while I was there.

They obviously were't just filming random drop in's though, I had seen on CL a few weeks earlier a post about "Do you have something interesting you want to sell?" "Would you like to be on tv?" "A popular television show is looking..." blah blah blah so basically they had everything all set up prior to filming.

Ran out to a few auctions this morning. One unit was probaby about a 10x15 was full of those yellow bags of rock salt. Were talking the whole unit over waist deep in bags of rock salt.

Cannot fathom what the person was storing this for. Unit wound up going for $85. What a pain that must be to unload unless you have a heavy duty truck, I imagine most cars or smaller trucks would be scraping tailpipes even only being a 1/4 loaded.

Other Forms of Selling / Anyone have any experience selling purses?
« on: May 05, 2011, 11:39:34 AM »
Just curious if anyone here has ever sold purses at flea markets or online or anywhere?

I recently came across a source where I can buy purses for like very cheap. The place sells designer knockoffs but I don't want any legal trouble so would stick to the non bootleg purses and the designer inspired bags.

Anyhow, figure at the price I can get them at no way I cannot make a buck. Just curious if anyone has sold purses. Do they sell well, what do you get for the average purse, etc.

I normally don't have much good to say about ebay but I actually like it. Sure it was actually a fee hike but it actually kind of suits my selling style and my mindset about ebay.

I'm cheap so I always hate listing something for paying a few bucks and then not having it sell. Profit margins on ebay acn be so think having to relist once or a few times can start cutting into profits on some items.

With the new fee structure we pay higher FVF fees and fvf on shipping however listing fee is free and so is buy it now.

I tend to do a lot of 0.99 cent start auctions even for good items and sometimes wind up giving stuff away. Sure I'd prob be better off listing for higher prices and getting hit with more fees for items that dont sell but just never really wroked that way.

With the new fee structure I just listed a baseball blogve that I probably in the past would have sold for 0.99 cents and let the auction run its course but listed it for a few bucks with a $25 buy it now. Someone bought it now day 1 so didn't have to wait for the auction to run its course and got 4-5 times what I would have gotten my old way of listing.
