General Storage Auction Talk / Nationwide storage auctions.
« on: March 14, 2013, 03:11:37 PM »
;) My wife and I are selling our house in Memphis, TN. We plan on traveling the country in our RV full time. We also want to hit some storage auctions all around this great country as we tour and see the sights. I'm looking for anyone who already does this. Any suggestions as far as websites (free or pay) that list all storage auctions in all states. I use storagetreasures.com mostly now, but it seems to focus mostly on large cities. We really like the little town facilities where the crowds of buyers are small. Also any info or websites that might help wtih any of the legalalities of being out of our home state (we are still going to keep an address in TN) and buying and selling. We are totally addicted to auctions and can't think of a better way to travel, tour and work at the same time. LIFE IS GOOD !! :)

Got this in a $65 locker. It was in a box, so it was not visable. Bought it for two shelving units and a bog crate. Sold the crate for $50. Got this appraised for $2300 to $3500 !!! Not bad for a $65 locker

Stories about Storage Auctions / Totally freaky

:o  So I go to an auction in Memphis, Tn and they have a starting bid price. Well the first unit opens at $400, no one bids. The auctioneer looks at the owner who nods at the auctioneer t accept any offer. Okay, now we all know not to bid if the opening price is high. The locker I end up buying was opened at $50, no one bids. Inside is a pile that looks like a pile of about three blankets with a gym type bag on top with zip lock bags inside with what looks like towels inside of them. On top is a possibly a portable DVD player. There are no bids, so I offer $20 and get it. Now the wierd part. The item on top is a Acer netbook. Yes the gym bag is full of nothing but zip bags with towels and ladies underwear. Some marked "Used during sex" Needless to say I did not open these. It took all I had just to feel the bags to see if they contained anything else, none did. They all got tossed. I did find a Kodak digital camera 6meg, seems to work fine, but no charger. Also found an envelpoe that read "husbands hair sample", tossed that as well. Now I lifted one blanket and tossed it aside, another and another. Under them were two inflatable air mattresses. picked up one and tossed it in the junk pile and there sitting on the last air mattress are 3 laptop laptop computers, one Sony, one Toshiba, one Mac and one more netbook. I'm going to a computer shop tomorrow to see if they work because none of them had power cords and the batteries were all dead. I'll let you know if any of them work. Happy hunting

I've read a lot of comments about the BEST way to clean and deodorize furniture. Each comment seems to negate a previously suggested technique. The suggestions so far are, air purifiers, vinegar spray, steam cleaners, Fabreeze, ultra-violet lights and waving a chicken foot over the sofa three days in a row................  only kidding on the last one, but wiling to try anthing that may work.

:D Thanks for all the great ideas. I agree that "thrift Store" conjures up "Very used" and "cheap".
Estate Liquidtors- I'll play with that Idea.
I've worked for "The Man" for too many years and want to do something I enjoy. I'm retired not dead. I like hard work and doing for myself and family is just what I'm looking for.
Goodwill and Salvation Army do have a large presence here and would be competition, so our location would have to be away from their area. Memphis ahs more then it's share of Thrift Stores, so I'm steering away for there.
I'm not afraid of failing, I'm afraid of not trying.
Are there any trade days in the Memphis area?  I know there were a few in TX, where we used to live and they seemed to do better then Flea Markets.  Thanks Again !!!   ::)

I am retired and I'm thinking about opening a Thrift Store in Bartlett, TN. Any suggestion would be appreciated so that I don't have to reinvent the wheel.

Storage Facilities / Do all facilities have auctions?

I live in Memphis, TN. Do all facilities have to have an auction? National chains and independents? Or can they do as they please with unpaid lockers?

I live in Memhpis, TN and I'm fairly new to storage auctions. Do all storage facilities (national chains and independents)  have auctions? Are they required to do so by law or can they do as they please with abandoned lockers?  :-\
