The Lounge / Re: Shooting at movie theater in Aurora, Colorado
« on: July 21, 2012, 11:13:58 AM »
We were at the range last night practicing for an upcoming IDPA match and of course the talk turned to the Colorado shooting. All of us are CCW permit holders and 4 are LE, so I was very interested in hearing what they had to say since this type of scenario is something we always hope we would never encounter.

The general feeling amoung us was that due to the fact that the shooter had used some sort of smoke cannister and your vision would be limited in a dark theater plus there would have been many other people moving into your line of fire....the only recourse would have been if you were close enough to try to get a heart or pelvis shot off - do it, otherwise flight and try to help as many as you can to get out also. Ultimately, trying to shoot him would have been futile since it turned out he was wearing ballistic gear.

Passing more restrictive gun/ammo laws would not have prevented this nutjob from killing as many people as he could. He would have just used plan B or C or D. More laws only apply to those of us that abide by them and have no effect on a lunatic who is hellbent on destroying as many people as he can......he could  have used a vehicle to run through the line before the move started.

As to your original question Movie......the Batman movies are not something I would take my young child to see regardless of the time.

My prayers and sympathies go out to the families of all the victims.

Rockin.....don't worry about it. Get it done when you can. No hurry on this end!

I have also had very limited time in the last month or so to do much of anything. Our last daughter graduated from high school on Wednesday night, we flew the oldest in from Kansas so she could watch her sister and we have had nothing but kids in and out of here for the last 3 weeks!

I have managed to sneak in a couple of auctions but have not bought a unit....I think my brain was telling me that I would not have time to empty one out much less sort anything.

Hopefully things will settle down over the weekend and I can get back into the swing of it....just in time for our 106 degree heat! ;)

Went to an auction on Saturday - 8 units up for bid, two were nice and I bid on them but they went to one of our "biggies" who is also a SCUBA diver friend of hubby's and he paid a little more than I thought he should (of course, a few of those bids were mine!). One had a nice assortment of decent quality items, one of which was a case that the men were convinced was a gun case....I thought it was an electric guitar case. Turned out to be a guitar case...an empty one. He said he will triple his money but I think he is talkin' out his rear.

Today was the U-Haul caravan - one place had 4 units, all trash. The second had two units - one looked like someone had moved their whole garage in - including two motors and 3 car doors! It went for $950.

Tormorrow there is a piece-by- piece but since our oldest daughter is in town from Kansas to watch her sister graduate from high school, I think I will pass on everything until next week.

Oh, almost forgot....crowds were small, 10-20 people and the prices were decent!

Happy huntin' everyone!

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Had Some Downtime!
« on: June 02, 2012, 12:04:11 AM »
Alias....LOL! Well, since you asked...... It all started back in 1973 when I bought first hubby a Lab as a hunting partner. We spent months training him and in the process I got hooked on obedience trials...then tracking....then worked for a kennel that trained dogs for law enforcement. Somewhere in all that I managed to collect quite a few Labradors and Flat-Coated retrievers, finished several AKC championships while always using our our home-bred show quality dogs to hunt over.

The shows are just like any other hobby - you develope friends within a common activity.

If you are asking why the judge always handles the "buddies"....the boys have got to have two of 'em or it is a DQ! ;)

Now I have a few Olde English Bulldogges that I attempt to do agility with. The word here is attempt.....I mainly just attend shows now to keep in contact with friends.

General Storage Auction Talk / Had Some Downtime!
« on: June 01, 2012, 11:09:48 AM »
I have not been too active lately......

I have hardly any inventory so have been using the time to catch up on yardwork and some "me" time. I went to Los Angeles last week-end for a dog show and visited with a high school friend that I have not seen in several years. We stopped by Redlands Thrift - supposed to be the largest thrift store in California. It was a little overwhelming...they have an amazing array of items.I had also planned to stop in at Jarrod and Brandy's (SW) shop on the way home just to say I did but it was hot and I had two dogs I managed to get talked into transporting for a rescue so I just stayed on the freeway.

I have plans to hit an auction tomorrow with 13 units up...hopefully the crowds will be thin and I can snag one or two. Then back down to LAX in the late afternoon to pick up the oldest daughter who is flying in for her sisters graduation next week.

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

Picker's Paradise / Re: Estate Sales
« on: May 21, 2012, 09:08:04 AM »
Cobia - LOL! I have done the same thing....maybe it is my upbringing by Dust Bowl parents - we don't waste nothing! I have had the same snickering by others at the sale, especially in the more affluent areas but let 'em laugh....

I have two estate sale companies that I like to attend on the last day that will deal on bulk buys. I have picked up all the leftover kitchen stuff for $20 or the garage items for $50 or so.

I avoid most estate sales on the first day as I tend to buy crap for myself! ;)

Flea Markets / Friday Night Swap
« on: May 11, 2012, 02:03:27 PM »
Truck is loaded for another try at the evening swap tonight. Hopefully it will be as busy as last week.

I am more prepared this time - canopy and lights are on board so we can stay longer than dusk!

The shoppers are 99% hispanic so I raided the last of my poultry pens, travel boxes and feeders. They always sell very well.

I will let ya'all know how it goes. Oh, I also broke down and bought tables at Walmart. ;)

It looks like the top to an old buffet. I have seen people use pieces like this above a fireplace mantle. It is very pretty!

I really like the picture of the sailing ship. Let me know when you determine a price....I may have a spot for it!

A quick e-bay search turned up quite a few selling for 5 pounds each. It seems that these are popular in Great Britian.

The trumpet....I have no idea but if you have a privetly owned music store in your area - have them take a look at it.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #5...May, 2012

Attended an auction today.....small privately owned facility, 4 - all 10X20 lockers and about 20 bidders. Three were owned by the same elderly woman who had passed away last year (all this according to the manager) and evidently the family lived out of state and had no interest in the units. When the doors rolled up....oh my, dust, dust, dirt and cobwebs! I bid on two but I guess I was not the only one there that loved the mystery of them. I dropped out at $400 as they were all only about 1/2 full of boxes, bags and a small amount of antique furniture. The last unit was the one I wanted....man stuff! It was a 20X20 that was owned by a plumbing company that had gone belly up. It was a disappointment. It was only about 2/3 full and that was scattered, looked like the owner had gone thru and taken most of the high dollar tools. It ended up selling for $1300.

No other auctions until the 25th.

I would be more than happy to send anyone a rattler or two that wants one!

We have them in abundance. Yesterday hubby wanted to sight in a new scope and if we are lazy (as we were yesterday) we just head out into the fields near the house......about a two minute drive. He drops me off to set up the target and he drives out to his 200 yard marker. I walk halfway up the bank and start to set the target and hear the rattle of several snakes.....crap, I am in shorts and flip-flops! I didn't move my feet just unholstered my pistol and shot into the brush....they skeedattled and I skeedattled. Hubby retrieved his own target on the way out!

I have killed two so far this year on our property. Sorry, but if they are in my yard...they are dead. The bulldogs may survive a bite but my chihuahua, poodle and pomX would not.

Flea Markets / Re: First weekend of the month.
« on: May 05, 2012, 02:08:34 AM »
Daughter and I tried a new swap-meet tonite!

It is held every Friday night from 4pm -10pm. Very large crowd, Space $15 for a 20X20. Tables rent for 4 bucks each....I know, I know, I gotta get new tables!

I took a small amount of inventory because I decided to go only this afternoon so I did not have hubby leave the truck at home. I had every nook and cranny stuffed in my Crown Vic! We kinda looked like my parents when they came to Cali from Arkansas during the Dust Bowl! Daughter was horribly embarrassed which made it even better. ;D

We did okay - $105 after expenses. Cleared out most of the smalls and a fair amount of that bedding. The rest will go to Goodwill on Monday. We packed up and left at dusk because I did not bring the Easy-Up or lights but next time we will stay for entire time as things really started to pick up around 7pm.

All in all a very nice evening and I am now guilt free to attend the Gun Show tomorrow morning and the Rodeo in the evening.

Have a great weekend everyone!
