The Treasure Chest / Most unusual sale yet!
« on: January 31, 2015, 02:23:27 PM »
So I awoke to a call Thursday morning by a lady who bought a vintage 1980's Alf sweatshirt, she wanted it mailed overnight to her workplace. Come to find out she is a famous costume designer worked on movies like Spiderman. The sweat shirt needed to be mailed to Saturday Night Live for a skit on Tonight. I don't know which actor but he wears a size small and its a white sweat shirt with Alf on front and it says ALF above his image and No Problem next to him just in case you are watching tonight.   ;)

Sorry if this is not in the right topic list, wasn't sure where to post this one.

I can see getting a kick out of being the local dave, lol, however my attitude is to basically fly under the radar. you start pissing people off or becomming the guy who gets every unit or overbys or whatever and it just brings you hassle, people try to run you up, etc.

Thats exactly how i feel about it.

usually they don't make a profit but the tenant doesn't get the remainder. after auction fees, late fees, labor fees etc. I've never heard of anyone getting a check in the mail.

I have seen many units go way beyond what was owed to the storage facility and yes any amount above that is owed to the renter. The storage facility by law is required to hold for a period after which they have to send the money to the government which they hold i believe for 1 yr and after that if no one claims it the government keeps it.

Storage facility gets to keep the profits if any from the sale.

What storage wars and the other shows don't tell you is that it costs money to get things appraised, in most cases. The way I like to appraise things is to make friends with local auctioneers. Maybe list a few items in their auctions to get the business relationship going. This way, when you get something needing an appraisal, you can always ask their opinion. Some items that you get an opinion on, you may want to list in an auction anyway..

I think, however, there is enough information online to get enough of an idea to put a price on things. In my shop, I have a big sign that says "We Welcome All Offers" because I know that I may be shooting the moon on some items. If someone has more knowledge than me, and can educate me on an item or genre, I may just accept their offer!

A good example of this is the book "The Little Prince". I have a first edition copy with mistranslations. The book was originally written in French and translated to English with errors. I have one of these priced at $100. However someone came into the shop who is a book guy. He said that while yes, this is a first edition with mistranslations, the books that are worth much more have a different color cover. Mine is a cream, the salmon covers go for much more. He pulled out his iPad and showed me examples. He said that my book, in fair condition brings $40. My book he said was better than that. So he offered me $60 and I took it.

Usually with a little work I can find an items worth on my own or one of my friends who deal in vintage / antiques can help. If i can't find it that way I sometimes use valuemystuff.com/ it cost $10 an appraisal or less; you can buy appraisals in packs of 3-5 i think. The people who appraise for you work or have in the past work for very nice auction houses like Sotherbys and Christies. Done it a few times it works well and you can print out your appraisal or attach a link to it for Ebay.

thats decent. do you get heat or power in there? thats what im looking for. During the winter i'm kinda confined to my garage which is only about 600 sq ft.

Doesn't come with heat has lights but I use propane heaters if i need in the winter. Im looking for a warehouse but cant find one that fits my requirements of size and location, they are either too small or massive or not near me.

yah i undertand what you're saying and I don't throw any of that stuff away. But when a new guy asks about things like that I don't want him bidding on a unit because he sees a bunch of faded glory t-shirts or something :P You can make money on clothes but It's never the reason I buy a unit.

Yes i agree never a reason just to buy a unit just throwing it out there to a newbie because that was one of my biggest mistakes when I first started.

Did you ask him if you could still buy them for $1 each?

He ended up selling them on the advertised date, I went but they sold for too much $$$.

A few years ago, I had to clean to out a rat infested unit with feces everywhere. And when I say everywhere, I mean every item had a turd stuck to it. It really sucked, but you just have to grin a bare it. This can be some nasty work at times.

Haha this just happened to me last month so much mouse crap i could have filled a bin and everything smelled like piss 10 x 20 almost all junk, broke even my workers got paid I worked for free

Manager at a facility tells me an auction is in 2 days I almost went but hadnt had a day off in 2 weeks and I really don't need anymore goods so I figured screw it stayed home, well he mis advertised the auction date and I would have been the only buyer if i would have gone had 4 units all 10 x 10 could have bought each one for $1.
