Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #1....January, 2014
« on: January 24, 2014, 12:22:37 PM »
Storage stories from Dallas area.
Went out yesterday for the first time in awhile.  Avoided the caravan public storage auction and hit up a small auction near my house.  Four units up for auction.  Only 5 bidders and the units were just ok.  I bought one for $25 that had a new Brute trash can on wheels filled with newer janitorial supplies. I also saw a bunch of men's XXL clothing on hangers.  It was a good buy.  The janitorial stuff stuff I sold that day for $60 for the whole bunch.
I found three sets of XXL Chef's whites from a local culinary school and the clothes were all in good shape.  All and all not to bad but no mystery.

I bought an online unit for $100 that was full of legos still with books and boxes.  A wedding dressed preserved in the dry cleaning box.  Some roller blades.  Not really a great buy but I knew the Legos would get me my money back and it all depends on the dress on margin of profit.  Also found a nice ice chest with a couple of air mattresses in them.

I am really concentrating on selling my left of over stock from last couple of months.  Weather has actually been decent and had a couple of good flea market days.

Online Storage Auctions / Re: How do you feel about buyer's premiums?
« on: January 12, 2014, 08:34:52 AM »
Polls are usually misused.  I worked in a couple of political campaigns when I was younger and the pollsters I worked for were very scientific.  The ones you see online or even on TV shows are used to make a point that was already settled on.

Anyway buyer's premium do not bother me because I know them beforehand.  I think of them as a small advantage because they are generally hated so it thins out the competition.

I actually think that the buyer's premium on Storagebattles is a good thing.  I believe in capitalism and obviously people are willing to pay it.  It's like the fees on Ebay and PayPal, I hate them but they provide a service not found anywhere else.

Great Job!!!!!
I have a question have you thought about doing an auction service to the facilities?  Have an agent come and check out the storage units, take pics, and post them to the site for a fee.  Having a consistent product will go a long way.

You had mentioned that auctioneers might be interested.  Take it one step further and have your own agent go to each facility and do the actual work.

Facilities are already use to paying a percentage.

Well for goodness sake, don't explain it to him or you might be helping him by this time next year.

Lol he is a good kid and a really hard worker.  I hope he can eventually do this on his own.

You don't get hit with fees if you cancel an item.  But you are right about the chargeback.

Online Storage Auctions / Lowball?
« on: January 10, 2014, 10:34:20 AM »
I haven't recently hired a really hardworking kid to help me with the moving and cleaning out of units.  I even offer him a 20% commission on items he sells via Facebook groups that he completes.  He has done well and actually probably even made more money than me on a couple of units which works out fine for me because all I do is supply money and process some of the stuff.

Anyway we were both looking at a unit online today.  I asked for what he thought I should buy the unit for and he said, "Lowball them"  What?! How do I do that?  I don't think he completely gets how this works  ;)

Picker's Paradise / Picking specialties
« on: January 10, 2014, 10:16:46 AM »
As Movie Man said I think I am becoming a picking convert.  I have been hitting a lot of thrift stores near where I work (there are four huge ones) and my specialty is Ebay and Amazon apps.  I scan stuff that is new and see if I can sell on Amazon marketplace or Ebay.  So far I have a hockey figurine I recently picked up at Goodwill for $2.

And after another post I think I am going to pick some washer and dryers this weekend.

I am just curious what you guys think your specialties are when it comes to picking.

Thee buy it now option is good but it defeats the purpose of the deal.  Getting out of Ebay's fees.

I found some nice upholstery fabric in a locker and have tried a couple of upholstery shops and no luck.  Do you guys know where else I might unload it.

General Storage Auction Talk / Specialties

One of the draws of storage auctions for me is the variety of items I have come across.  But it seems lately I have done really well with washer and dryers.  I have done some research and found ways to clean and repair many of the ones I have gotten and have been doing well selling them.  Just basic cleaning and painting usually does the trick as most of the ones I get are working fine.

Do you guys have specialties that you have found by accident?  As I buy more and research more it also makes picking a lot easier since I know what to look for now.

I usually dictate times for my meets but on big item hard to sell stuff I will make time to fit with customer's schedule.

Welcome to the Online Storage Auctions Forum / Re: Hello Folks
« on: January 09, 2014, 10:49:46 AM »
I bought the very first locker I saw.  I think your strategy is sounder.
You should be ahead of the game already from your selling experience.   I have stated many times buying is the fun part the processing and the selling is the hard part and where all the profit comes from.
I am beginning to see the wisdom in the picking more and more, especially in my situation where I still have a full time job.  Picking and online is pretty much all I do these days.
Good luck to you and this forum is a great place to bounce ideas off people or ask questions.  I even got a good appraisal from this forum.

Just thinking about how important my smart phone is to buying and especially selling.  I use quick scan and the ebay mobile app to scan bar-codes that give me immediate access to prices.
Not to mention these days I take a couple of pics and post on Facebook exchanges as I process them on site.  I have even sold some before I even get back to my storage or store.

All good forums need regulars.  It is still pretty amazing considering how esoteric our subject is.  Plus a majority of the old school buyers would never even think about a forum.  I am in a pretty good community of buyers and sellers and none of them go to any forum.
Gratz to all!!!
