Bought a loser today
« on: February 20, 2013, 01:12:51 PM »
I bought a unit today and I'm already regretting it. It has a ton of furniture in it but some things I was hoping would be there weren't. For example, there was a nice 3 piece curio cabinet set that the doors were removed from. Went through most of the unit and so far I haven't seen them. There are 5 or 6 dressers in this unit but every one of them is missing hardware, some need to be painted and one is missing a drawer. There are a couple of decent bedroom sets that I should be able to get $300 a piece on, a projection TV ($TBD), a 1/8 scale RC truck, and a bunch of housewares. Profit margin will be slim on this unit and after all the work needed, I have come to the conclusion that this one wasn't worth my time. If only those damn glass doors would have been there...would have made it worth it.

The unit did have 5 direct TV HD receivers. Did we ever determine whether there is a market for that stuff?

Are you good at re-purposing? I'm so not.. But if I were, I would be buying a lot more of those types of units! I'm currently looking for someone in my area who is good at all that kind of stuff to partner up with! Lots of artsy fartsy types out here who love that kind of stuff!

No, but I'm definitely going to have to be creative to make a profit on this unit. I'll probably have to remove the hinges on the curio cabinets and fill in the screw holes with colored wood filler. I'll need to replace the hardware on the dressers. Some of the beds and dressers will need to be cleaned, possibly even painted.

I'm tempted to place an ad on Craigslist and sell the unit as is just to get my money back. Matter of fact, I'm going to do that now and see if I get any bites.

You might be better off that way. It's tough to find someone who will repurpose for you. The people that I've approached about it said, "You can bring me stuff and I'll make you an offer." What that means to me is, I'll buy the crap you can't sell for real cheap.. Yeah...Better than nothing, but I'm looking for more of a partnership than just a selling source.

I ran an ad for the unit on Craigslist last night and this morning a guy contacted me and wanted to see it. Turns out, he and his wife were at the auction and were interested in the unit then but thought it sold for a lot more than it did. I let them look around and they decided to buy it. I got all of my money back, kept several things from the unit and made a $14 profit. Much better than the alternative - 2 to 3 days painting and repairing furniture for a few hundred dollars profit.

Good deal! If you get to make your money back plus keep some items, it's a win!
