I think I have seen those when I was way younger mixed in with my grandfather's stuff. Although I cant tell you what it is. Sorry, is there any kinds of markings on the piece?

I have no idea, but the thing that popped into my head was cartridge box... I have no idea though, that's just a guess.

it looks like a case to hold metal stamping dies, if there were more holes I would say the alphabet but I guess some other kind of stamps. Does one side lock down on the other?

You know what, come to think of it, I really do think that is what it is. Google it and see what you come up with. And if it is, then it wasnt mixed with my grandfather's stuff I remember seeing it. Would be my grandmother's stuff. She use to work at an old small time newspaper printing press.

Thanks for the help everyone. I think the metal die route looks like a possibility. The box has clasps on both ends and has what looks like a label holder on the front. This could have been one of a set. I've gone to 2 antique dealers that couldn't tell what it was but both offered to buy it. The large hole could have held a tool. There are 14 small holes in 2 rows of 7. The other suggestion was a medical vial case for a doctor to carrry. I'll keep researching the die route. I just hope it is of some value to someone.

There is one other think you could check, which is highly doubtable, is for a chemist set. Holding only several test tubes and a small flask.

It looks just like an old field sample testing case HAHAHA.. it holds vials of field samples and test chemicals etc. my dad used to have one for doing soil samples on the farm to test the minerals in it for fertalization etc. back in the 60's. good luck. To bad you didnt get the beaker and glass vials with the black plastic screw caps. you could play hairy potter LOL. as they had different types of acids in some of the vials, they made kewl smoke when introduced to water (sulpher). I never got my but paddeled as bad as I did when I got caught playing with it lol.

Any rate I can't tell for 100% sure but Thats what poped into my old head when I seen it.

Just Googled test tube cases and found 1 with very similar holes in 1 section of a larger box. I think the medical/chemist angle is worth investigating also. Will let you all know what I find out. Thanks.
