Possibly a gold mine?

Possibly a gold mine?
« on: February 29, 2012, 12:20:02 PM »
So I bought a horder unit in southern NY, and took what I thought was of value and junked the rest, however some of my co workers (my other job) are starting to say that I have some REALLY rare items.

Here is one that I have, and I have no idea what it is let alone what it's made out of. I thought it was porclien but I'm being told it could be crown tusscan?

Here's a picture. I will post more as soon as I can.

That's odd.
By no means an expert or even novice ....all I know is from researching all the crap my grandma left me upon her death.
A Cambridge Tuscan piece should have a little "crown" with or without the word Tuscan. (I google'd and double checked this)
Even the companies that made similar pieces marked their stuff.

My GUESS is it's a modern decor piece.....???

Hope I'm wrong but even so my grandma's stuff was in the $30-$75 range. Not gold mine but you might have a few bucks......

You know what, and that's okay. It is fairly clear I need to get some of these looked at, my question is do you know what type of dish it is?

Also here is the next item I have no idea about:

Now the last picture is the mark, but I can't figure out what type of bowl this is. Thanks for all the help!

Not a clue on the first one! lol

Second one, holland pewter, can't tell from the picture the size but kinda looks like what they call a "porrige pot".  A serving dish.  I don't know where you are but here Pewter isn't a big seller. Maybe $20?

Want to be very clear.....I had experience in selling stuff like this but in no way am I sure.
Could be totally off. Just giving you a direction to start looking.  <end of disclaimer>.  ;)

I go to an antique store. Not a high end place but kinda looks like a swap meet in there or thrift store.
They offer way low but those people will usually know the history and what it is.
Then I go research it myself online.

Or good ol eBay. Search the little info you have and scroll thru pictures......

I've been searching google, and eBay, but when you don't know what something is called it's super hard.

Ok, I am starting to think this maybe the cream of the crop or at least so far...as I listed it on eBay and it's hit 22 dollars already. This is a ether a silver or nickel jewelry box. Any idea how I can tell? it passed the magnet test, and is NOT magnetic.

Notice the stamp with the T in the bird. I can't find it ANYWHERE.....or any reference to it.

Put a drop of hydrogen peroxide in a hidden spot.
Not a great test but peroxide will oxidize silver.

Don't know that hallmark. Will search around. By the look of the piece and being the hallmark is a duck I'm guessing a French origin if it's old.

looking into japanesse makers marks and that mark does fit. Mid-1900's they had a thriving export economy. One company alone had hundreds of marks. Several used a basic symbol (bird) and a "T" just like that. Could be name of company or Tokyo or some they put the letter of the import company they produced for (i.e. "T"orronto Imports)
Anyway, can't say it IS from japan but after seeing the styling of the eBay one and what I've read Im leaning in that direction. But still, that mark just doesn't strike me as japanesse. Doesn't look like anything I've found. Looks like European ones.   But what do I know.  :-\

If you figure it out be sure to PM me and let me know!

On the first picture if you take the lid off of the dish does the handle fit into the stem? If so it may be a wedding box. I  found one in the most recent locker I purchased. It is clear and I thought it was a compote dish.  After a few hours of research I came across several wedding boxes. They are very collectable.
