Craigslist / Re: Selling Smalls On Craigslist
« on: September 02, 2013, 08:06:00 PM »
Some success selling things like Nascar cardboard cut outs, records, and yes even old bottles. But I also had all of that stuff in bulk. It wasnt just one or five cardboard cut outs, and more like 100 different types of old bottles. The calls were few and I made sure to jump on the ones I did get.

General Storage Auction Talk / Protection
« on: September 02, 2013, 04:04:21 PM »
In this business, a mostly cash one, how do you protect yourself? Its not uncommon to carry large amounts of cash, and even if you havent made enemies, you cant predict other people. Ever been in a situation where you needed it?

This is just my personal opinion, and how I attack craigslist. Anything that you wouldnt sell for at least $20 dollars is not worth putting on craigslist. I dont think its so much the item (in reference to "smalls or bigs") as it is the value. People use craigslist to feel like there getting a good deal. Why would you drive anywhere else but Dollar General to buy a $10 blender as opposed to a $5 one.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: bought some lockers in august

Never doubt what is worth selling on ebay, I'd look up EVERYTHING your not 100% positive on. I have been very surprised on things I might not have even put out on my yard sale tables. My most recent example: A Ninja Turtles Cereal bowl. It would have took months to get 50 cent to a dollar. They sell on ebay for $15-20 (mine sold within a week). Yea not a big score, but for something that could just as easily been tossed in the trash? Yea, I'll take it.

No one has suggested Travis has done anything illegal, just actions that are shady and leave him open to criticism. Movieman makes some valid points however.

Of course I'm sure we all have done things in our lives that others would look down on, but not from his position. IE representing himself as a big wig in the storage industry, I would expect Travis deals with shots on his character every day.

General Storage Auction Talk / Yearbooks? License Plates?
« on: August 29, 2013, 07:52:31 PM »
Just curious if anyone out there sells/trys to sell license plates and yearbooks? A quick check on ebay shows vintage license plates going for a lot, and I have some more recent plates from West Virginia I just stuck out in my yard sale. As far as yearbooks go, I've saved a lot that I've found. Ive sold some from local highschools of years past for 10 bucks a pop, but have gathered a collection of out of town/state ones now. Are items like this trash to you? Whats some other weird/personal item you've been able to sell for cash?

Travis has been revealed to be unethical in several aspects, like re-selling the lockers hes combed through. But what has also been said; he is the leader of the only active forum on the subject.

What's it Worth?? / Re: Bell South Stock Certificates

I know nothing about stocks, but from what was said here, maybe you can find the person whose name is on them, then offer to cut them in. I'd make them sign a contract in case they bail out. Assuming it could all work like that of course.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Storage doors that won't open.
« on: August 24, 2013, 09:51:20 PM »
This thread was disappointing. I thought it was going to be about those storage doors that wont stay open on their own, hang to the left, or are falling apart completely. What a pain in the ass when you have a half working door and a whole room to clean.

eBay / Re: Why don't buyers leave feedback?!

Sometimes no feedback is good feedback.  :)

Storage Facilities / Re: Storage facility policies
« on: August 20, 2013, 07:36:44 PM »
The same. Extra space is a buyers premium and cleaning deposit, Public Storage is nothing. To follow suit I have never attended an extra space auction, but am a regular of Public Storage. To add to your comments, most auctioneers who have a multi-town following also seem to charge one or both

Storage Facilities / Re: Storage facility policies
« on: August 20, 2013, 05:01:03 PM »
I think charging deposits in any fashion is ridiculous. I have never put down a cleaning deposit on a locker, ever, out of 150+ I'd estimate. I have crippled to paying a 10% buyers premium though (also tax in some cases), and that was annoying. Luckily it seems most of those type of auctions are regulated to auction zip, and they are kind enough to let you know ahead of time.

The thing is, these facilities act like it is costing an arm and a leg to dispose of leftover contents. Who are you kidding? We will see it back on the auction block next month!

Stores / Re: Do you offer returns?
« on: August 19, 2013, 05:27:54 PM »
Good topic, and refreshing to see it not started by Movieman or Travis. I have been struggling with my return policy as well. Furniture is cut and dry, sight on seen. With electronics I show it working in person before purchase. So basically no refunds of any kind. But you have to be able to back up a policy like that, and I have been in one or two dicey situations with an unsatisfied customer. Sometimes I wonder if that is the right approach. After all, having a return policy at all builds confidence in the buyer and creates good will.

It may still be to early to make the call, but at the moment I am hoping the 'online storage auction' market goes the way of the dinosaur. It is already obvious the prices in my area are going several times online what they would in a live auction setting, and giving more people a chance to view/bid is only a bad thing for the locker buyer.

That is outstanding to be able to make 2k out of that mess.

I would have never thought there was that much useable scrap in that picture.

That was one of two identical lockers, and also the low investment price helped! The first one I bought for a dollar, the second one I 'volunteered' to clean out.
