General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Sorting advice

I have to agree with Movieman, I don't have the space and time to rationally expend my energy on a low % task.  I'm sure those who do it have found success, I jst can't rationalize the time and effort such a task would require.

General Storage Auction Talk / Best Unit
« on: May 12, 2011, 03:39:02 PM »
What is the single best unit that you have ever had, in terms of profit?

I'll start:  $2,100 on a 10 X 10 unit.  Took about 8 days to sell everything in it (besides the trash of course).

Best of luck to you!  I hope you do well.

9th unit of my career and by far the worst.  If it's not old crappy romance books, it's boxes and boxes of old office supplies.  I am now the proud owner of 1,000 of pens and pencils, post it notes, crayons, ect.  I did score a 1965 World Series Program between the Twins and Dodgers that I love (Twins fan) and they're actually kinda spendy on ebay, but I'm keeping it!

The Treasure Chest / Got Another Unit
« on: May 02, 2011, 10:54:33 AM »
The last unit I got rocked, close to 2,000 profit in one week.  The unit I got on Saturday...not so much.

First off, the crowd was large, full of newbies.  I'm guessing 60-70% of the 60 people were new.  This auction was well advertised.  Anyways, 11 units up for auction, the one I got looked interesting from the door.  It had a Star Wars foosball table, tons of totes and boxes, patio furniture, and and a crappy couch.

I got it for $250, should've got it for about $50, but one geek was stuck on the foosball table.

Anyways, get it home start going through it and it's nothing but books.  Crappy, paperback, worn out books.  Hundreds of them.  By far the most garbage I have ever gotten out of a unit.

I got real excited initially because I found an old Silverware set, and the first two pieces I checked were Kirk & Son (Ebay it if you don't know)  However, the rest was Communion 1936 Silver Plated, 66 pieces.  Should fetch about $50-100 for it.  Not as good if it were all Kirk and Son, than we're talking 1,200-2,000.   I did score 312 brand new golf balls still in their original packaging, already sold them $80 on CList.

Also found a huge stamp collection, but upon further review, they may fetch only $20-$40 on ebay.
The Star Wars foosball table only sells for about $50, and the patio furniture I can maybe get $40 for.

Not a fan of this unit because 90% of it is trash, my God there is so much trash.  Including the mouse infested, chewed up couch.

If I'm lucky, I should make about $200 on this unit after dump runs, gas, and other expenses.

Yeah I hear ya.  I was hoping to get more for the couch and love seat but I was happy with $700.  I was worried it would take me awile to move this unit initially, but once I relisted CList after the 48 hours passed, the stuff moved real fast.  I was lucky our baseball game got rained out tonight so I could move some stuff tonight.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: What is the hardest item to sell ?
« on: April 26, 2011, 06:18:08 PM »
Personally I've had luck with selling books, I made over $400 on Dungeons and Dragons books in one week.  I'd say the hardest thing to sell, for me, is microwaves.

I would check and clear the guns --- then sell them if everything comes back clean, if not, I would give them over to the authorites.

Drugs I would just dump (why risk my investment on this unit)

Cash - shhhhhh :)

That's the way I'd do it.

General Storage Auction Talk / Mattresses in Units
« on: April 26, 2011, 12:58:00 PM »
Anyone else notice that units with several mattresses go for a lot less money?  It seems to me that mattresses deter lots of people right away because they don't want/know to deal with them.  Best unit I ever got had 6 mattresses in it, got it for 5 bucks.

It's comical how crazy people get at an auction when there is a safe in locker.  The bidding gets outrageous on the hopes and dreams of riches.  Rationality goes right out the window.

Thanks for the rational response Movieman.  I'm also asking the question for potential future complications.  Once the school year ends I plan on trying this full time over the summer instead of teaching summer school as I have in years past.  I'm counting down the days until freedom from middle school kids.  It's nice to have resources and people with more experience provide insight into the grind that this profession employs.  My plan, subject to change, is to attempt to get a unit a week this summer, so I will need to know the tricks and insight to rollover inventory quickly without cutting my profits short.

Over time I know this locker will pay off, but I'm worried about the time it will take to find buyers for the higher end items.  The last unit I got, the "Dungeons and Dragons" unit I got for $5 (I made a topic on it if you were wondering) was great in the fact I got rid of 90% of the items within a week.  I lack a lot of space to store items, which I why I try to only buy one unit a month.

Anyone on here have trouble moving higher end furniture/items?  My dilemma is, do I hold out for a high price, or sell it at a quick price?  I have the couch/love seat on CList for $800.  In the 10 lockers I have bought, none of them had higher end items, so I guess I'm new to this aspect of the biz.
