General Storage Auction Talk / Re: What would you do?
« on: April 26, 2013, 12:57:11 PM »
I use to worry about what to do; today I will keep and sell.

Yep, it's a SAD, SAD story. Yet somehow they have a facebook page. Maybe they are still broke and using the public library, but SAD, TOO BAD.

Hell, I SELL PICTURES  from lockers I buy back to the previous owner.  Some would say they have no value, but I figure it this way.

1) If nothing else, the frames have value.

2) The pictures DO have value...to the former owner.

I've only had one former owner squawk about it or challenge me about it.

One guy came to look at his pictures, etc and I told him $25 and he said they weren't worth that. That's funny, those irreplaceable memories you mentioned on the phone are now not worth $25?

BUT, he said "There's a little saw in an aluminum box I would be interested in." I had already sold it, but I asked him how much he would pay. He said he'd give $25 for that. That saw was what he was really there for. His locker had several totes of NEW orthotic devices (for sprained limbs) and that was his business.

The "saw" was the kind used for cutting through plaster/fiberglass casts. They sell new for $800 to a $1,000. I sold "his" on eBay for $400.  After he made his $25 offer I told him I had sold it for $400 and he just turned on his heels and walked out the pedestrian gate at my storage facility.

I think if it sells for $1500-$1700 the seller will be happy. I'm pretty sure it's going to sell, his reserve is realistic.

Hmmm.....

Wish I could see what his reserve is. I might be tempted to bid if I lived in the area and knew what he wanted at a minimum.

If your a reseller though, it doesn't really matter. It's all inventory regardless of whether it's from a private seller or from a storage facility.

Huh?  Is that why the two or three legitimate listings on the new website have RESERVES?

Seldom does one see a RESERVE at a lien sale. Sure, once in awhile, but even that is suspect.

Equating a private sale by someone who has a locker full of merchandise to a true LIEN sale is like comparing the proverbial apples and oranges. They're both round, but that's about it.

There are two types of people who might use your new website....1) sellers (of a variety of types) 2) buyers (of a variety of types, including newbies).

The BUYERS (who have experience) will definitely see a differece between a LIEN SALE and a private seller, just as they do at a regular storage auction at a facility. Manager's units (put togthers) and other "private" sales "never" (or at least SELDOM) do as well as the LIEN lockers at a regular auction.

Nope, I think Alloro made a very good point.

Herein lies the big difference between a private sale and an actual storage auction. With a private sale the seller has a vested interest in getting top dollar for the contents. With a storage auction the management is looking only to seek the money they're out and to get the unit back up and ready for renting.

That says it all !   ;D

Went to one of three auctions today and skipping the first two didn't cost me anything...guys said they were bad.

Third place had 3, but it's a good area so worth going to.  Only about 20 people there...surprise ! Only problem was 8 of us were willing to pay $1000 for a good locker.

First one went for $800 to a regular.  Second one similar...to a regular.  Third one went to a newbie for $700. The contents on all three were (IMO) close to what the people paid for them, but there may have been surprises to make some profit on.

When the mortgage forclosures happened a couple of years ago I got one here for $875 but EVERYTHING showing was $ signs waiting to be cashed in. That locker had air-conditioning units (2) Iron fence sections (many) Outside lighting power distributors (all stainless steel), Rollaway tool box (with good tools), built-in appliances the property owner took out before the bank took over, etc, etc.  I think I cleared $2400 on that one.  Now it would have gone for $2400 to start !

... however if you have automated software you can actually put up a lot of acutions in a relatively short period of time

Could an automated program put up 200,000 separate listings in a week's time ?  Somehow I doubt it, but who knows.

You may or may not have gotten this email from eBay...depends on your level of activity, etc.

Look at the number of free ads they offered me. It would take many 24 hour days of work to post that many unless they were the "similar" kinds items and still one could "never" do it.   What are they thinking ?

I'm glad I grew up in the ERA I did....either that or I just plain ignored stupid tricks like this if they were around.

I heard a story on the caravans this past week that someone that was pretty cool was let go from one of the auction companies.

I heard from bRyan himself that he QUIT but it could have been because of the medical/auction story you related. If his boss John C. made bRyan choose between an auction and his child then John C. is an even bigger ***hole than I thought.

bRyan has worked for the jerk boss for 18 years. I wouldn't have worked for him for 18 days. The former boss was full of himself even before he appeared in a couple of the tv shows (for 30 seconds each time). He's on a power trip and always will be.

Once bRyan told his boss. "Look these guys are just out here hoping to make a $100 profit from buying and selling. They don't care about your auctions of art on a cruise ship."  He was right.

Finally, do you know of any other auctioneer who had his car "keyed" by a disgruntled auction buyer?  Neither does John C.

I have them listed on my local craigs, $40 each.

I have sometimes gotten large city/contractor owned trash barrels in lockers. The biggest ones I have kept and used them for DRY storage of some articles out in an otherwise rainy backyard. I sometimes keep folded down boxes in there (by different sizes) or any other thing I don't have room for but that needs protection.
